Since when is the Salvation Army so "picky" in regards to donations???

I have a Old tv 60 incher DLP Sony that works fine and some nice furniture that is a few years old and maybe has minimal blemishes if anything....

Anyways a needy family could use this and I called them and they said basically that we dont really take tvs bla bla bla and the furniture has to be very new for us to even take it...

Fucking sad actually , now it will go on the curb and on CL under the "Free Shit come and get it " section....

You would expect for em to take anything n everything and give em to needy peeps but I guess they dont

They are always super picky this time of year. Everyone gets new shit for the holidays and they get overloaded with TVs, etc.

If they were smart they'd still take it, but most of the work force is made up of people trying to put in their community service hours so what do they really care, easier to just refuse it.

I used to help out with a charity a couple of years back doing collections and stuff.

It's not that they don't really want your stuff, it's that too many people are too fucking lazy to dump stuff and call charities to remove it. The number of times we went to houses to collect stuff and half of it would be rubbish that they were too lazy to dump (or didn't want to pay for dumping).

The strange think was, the better the area and bigger the house, the more rubbish you collected.

I totally believe it. Back in the day I used to go yard saling on the weekends with my friends, the wealthier the neighborhood the worse the items. This one mc mansion gated community got together and did a neighborhood yard sale and it was so bust. People just put out garbage. There was one woman that really stuck out in my mind, she was trying to sell scraps of carpet for $25 a peice! Not that people even buy carpet remnants at a garage sale, but these were real scraps- like odd cut peices that I can't imagine anyone would have any practical use for.

Yard saling was fun but ebay kinda killed it. Same with thriftin. I collect like eames era / danish mod stuff and living in FL it's a b it of a haven for it, but with ebay and such there are just too many people making a living out of it. Kinda killed it, don't have the patience anymore.

its starting to get more attention now because they are finally being forced (if they will be) to reveal their top execs of the NFL salaries like all "non profits" are required to do if you make over $150,000. Their salaries are reported to be over 10 mil.

You simply cannot hide behind non profit status and run a multibillion dollar business.... oh wauit, if youre the NFL you can.

good read on it

"The NFL is a tax exempt organization with annual revenues of $6.9 billion. The American public has a right to know what kind of compensation the executives of nearly $7 billion in sales earn under the protection of the tax exemption afforded them by the Internal Revenue Service."

wow, there were time in the distant past where I would have loved to have bought good furniture or a TV. I think you should put an ad in the paper and sell it cheap, someone would be very grateful for the chance to get decent housewares inexpensively, especially in this economy

It is amazing sometimes. When I moved across country a few years ago I called a charity to come pick up all the furniture I was not taking with me. All the guys did that picked it up was bitch that there was so much stuff and as for the bedroom furniture that was upstairs - they said they do not do stairs and if I brought the furniture down they'd take it then.

What the fuck are you talking about? Salvation army has more dedicated people working for the needy than any other organization I know of... They make profit? sure, to build their completely modest church facilities and the rest goes to figuring out how best they can help others in need.

I'm not religious in the least but the people who belong to that organization do far more for others than most will ever do.

I do agree it's a waste to turn down free stuff though, thats just bad business... maybe its just a storage issue.

yeah, in the current economy you just KNOW there are a lot of people who could really use a break. Something to feel good about. I bet your furniture and TV could go a long way. If I were in your position I would put an ad in the paper and sell it dirt cheap or contact a church (they almost always knows someone who could use furniture and such)

I donate stuff to a local mission that takes care of homeless. I tried the salvation army and it was like they were doing me a favor when I was trying to give perfectly fine furniture and clothes.

I'll tell you when. Its whenever they may have to lift something heavy, or walk up and down stairs. Both of those will get you a "oh I'm sorry we dont take ___"

A few years back I was unloading about 6 old, but good condition, monitors. I loved them and they worked great but I bought a bunch of LCD monitors to save space. I figured I'd call the Salvation Army because someone would gladly appreciate them. I called up, two dudes showed up and said and I quote "Nah we don't take dem old ones, you want to get rid of any of dose flat screens"? I was like, wtf? Salvation Army is picky all of a sudden. I asked why and they said "You don't want them, what makes you think someone else will?" I guess they had a point but then again, I thought the point of the Salvation Army was to give under privileged people the opportunity to get a little extra--not top of the line shit for cheap.

Salvation Army turned down $4k in couches I was trying to donate 2 years ago because one of the pieces had a cat scratch on it.

You don't even have to do that....Show up at the Goodwill dropoff point and let the volunteers drag that shit straight in from your vehicle.
