The injured were identified as department members Luis Cruz-Vera and Joseph Leahy and staffer Stephanie Monticello. Their specific conditions were not released.

Student Erin Johnson told The Huntsville Times a biology faculty meeting was under way when she heard screams coming from a conference room.

University police secured the building and students were cleared from it.

There was still a heavy police presence on campus Friday night, with police tape cordoning off the main entrance to the university.

The Huntsville campus has about 7,500 students in northern Alabama, not far from the Tennessee line. The university is known for its scientific and engineering programs and often works closely with NASA.

If this were a rare or isolated case then you may have a point. But it seems to happen all the time, more and more often.

extreme violence in schools = very poor education and parenthood. multiple instances in the past indicate that this is a problem on a national level, children are thought wrong values and learn no respect for others and their surroundings. TV addiction also adds to the mix.

When someone does something crazy like that, it seems to me that a better and more productive dialogue would be about mental health care in the USA, not gun access. If we all walked around cowboy-style, a crazy person like that college prof would be stopped faster, but the more important issue is how to identify and help crazy people, while avoiding needless marginalizing. Are the antidepressants prescribed so liberally in America helping or hurting? How did a woman who murdered her brother get the opportunity to murder at least three more people twenty years later? Did she ever get any help and treatment? Those are the salient points, not what the weapon of choice was for her crazy ass.

Actually, just 'cause you asked, I'll say that I think, as a society, we should explore just the opposite. Although I do generally think that people who have already committed murder are perhaps not the best folks to arm, even though I am a strong gun rights proponent.
