I haven't got around to encrypting my computer yet but I will with truecrypt. It was recommended by a friend and no apparent performance issues either.

Yes, it will slow you down a bit, and in fact, my experience with truecrypt is that the longer you run it, the slower things get. Plus, you have to enter a long (I think it's 16 character) truecrypt password every time you boot up

You might try just encrypting a particular folder and put your sensitive stuff there

Been using TC for years. I have a whole drive encrypted and it does it slow it down a little bit. I only really notice it when transferring a tonne of files or huge files. You can choose from a whole bunch of different algorithms (or combinations of algorithms) depending on how secure you want to be. Apart from that once you mount the drive it works just like a normal drive.

its alright but it does slow things down.. for me, my comp acted weird sometimes.. so i unistalled it and deleted the fuckin thing.. I will be tryin it again once i buy a better comp.

I use PGP and have for years, works out pretty well!

I wouldn't use disk encryption on low end SSD drives as it slows them down a LOT. (computer often freeze for 15-30 seconds)

With a good 7200 RPM disk (maybe 10k rpm for stationary pc's ) you will probably never notice it.

fill up the computer with lots of RAM to minimize temporary disk writes

Then again I might be wrong and it might have made my laptop slow as fuck compared to how it should be

Well i thinking about buying new 500 GB hard drive since my main drive is old maxtor 160 GB(maxtor not maxtor-seagate)and i have feeling how it's duration coming to the end and i have 1 tb seagate as secondary drive but i dont dare to put it as primary beacuse it belong to series which requied firmware update otherwise disk would die.Any recommendation for disk?Hitachi maybe?

No it won't, they can just plant a Trojan after you've entered your pass. Truecrypt is for data-loss security not as a hack prevention.

It's known to speed up your system in some cases as the assembly AES implementation can improve read efficiency.

I have an old backup archive that I truecrypted to keep my old source code 'secure'. I built that with TrueCrypt 4.3.

I installed v6 to read it, and it caused nothing but bluescreens - I had to reinstall 4.3 to read the archive.

I trust my data in TrueCrypt about as much as I trust gmail for a filebackup. It may work, but I sure as hell would not recommend it.
