I have paid up to $40 per click for casino keywords in the past so it doesnt really surprise me much, I guess it all depends on the money you can make or branding as indirect profit.

Of course at $40 per click, if ten competitors click once per day just to fuck you, it hurts, and be sure they do.

Sometimes the keyword is just boned...every person is bidding crazy, so you're screwed.

But normally it is the quality score, which can still be high, but the balance can be off... landing domain/page, keyword, ads relationship is off, bounce rate/return rate is showing the keyword isn't a good match, or the site is to commercial (ie not local)...

The game is very different today, that's for sure..more factors can screw you than I could remember to list.

Not worth it. Adsense pays shit. The rules are not black and white. And unless your content is above and beyond average Google will see right through your attempts at targeting high paying keywords and shut you down.

I actually run an adwords campaign for a client that uses a lot of those types of terms and they range from $6 to $15 per click. Might seem like a lot, but for these businesses, in the long run they make hundreds from each customer. Their CPA is around $300 per client but they almost triple that in revenue selling virtual goods.

Try using some exact match terms instead and make sure to have a strong negative keyword list otherwise your just be blowing through wasted clicks. If you need some help, let me know

I can tell you that just because it says it takes $8 per click to get on the first page that is often not true. I've gotten in the top 5 with a bid 1/4 of the recommended first page bid.

Well.. even if you have a 10, it doesn't mean it's a good 10, but it always better than 7

When you have a 7 or off balance bid with a 10 score. It means the balance isn't perfect, and it has to be perfect to get the price down.

Break the keyword or groups of very related keywords off into a unique ad group. Then create a new landing page and ad, to better relate to those keywords. This way you can at least get 10 out of some of the 7's and you might balance things out better.

If you have the balance right, you can walk your prices down. As an example: You bid $5, but they give you the clicks for $4.75, mark your spot, then drop your bid to $4.75, mark your spot, and keep walking down to the price/spot you want - that also still gets clicks. Getting clicks on the ad is important to helping your balance. If two people are bidding for the same spot, and the other guy gets better clicks, you will pay more than the other guy.

IE: Balance, if spot 5 costs the guy $2 a click but he gets two times the clicks than you, it means your cost per click will be $4 (roughly, if everything else is in balance). Point being, Google will keep the balance.
