![]() Could someone point me in the right direction when it comes to what brand I should get, what model etc?
I only want one for the bedroom... not looking for a huge model or anything, just something that will do a medium sized room. Do I want one that I can clean multiply times, or one where I have to change filters? Or are these things complete bullshit all-together? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

mine was a Honeywell with a charcoal HEPA filter like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ENX6TRVMSWBRWS I was surprised how well it worked, you could smoke in a room and a couple minutes later no one could tell. I ended up giving it to someone that smoked in their small apartment with three kids that had asthma, felt bad for her kids.

I am a dealer for high end air purifiers. Not the flimsy outdated technology you see hawked on TV and in stores like Home Depot. Most air purifiers are just an excuse to make money. Post your email or Skype and I will give you near wholesale price on something that actually removes 99% pollutants and allergens. The vast majority of purifiers remove only about 10% of the particles because they use technology developed in the 1950s.
Do you want this for your allergies or more for air pollution? If you only need this for allergies and a cheap unit like Honeywell does the job for you then congrats. But people with severe allergies and people who don't want to breathe pollution need something that removes almost all the particles. |

I had several HEPA air purifers from $40 to $500 and I could never tell the difference. They all did the same thing. You know its working when you change the filter and its all nasty and dusty. Thats the crap you would have been breating.
I'd say just get a good cheap one that uses a HEPA filter and has a style you like. |

Changeable filter types are good. Since you want to purify the air, you do not need one of those cheapies that sell with the argument "no filter change needed", because that will only mean you more or less circulate the air. Either washable filter of some kind of plastic or changeable HEPA filters. It is somewhat more work with dealing with filter washes or changes, but you certainly get better effect!
You might also want some features like timer. So you can set it to start a few hours before bedtime and then go off before you fall asleep. Another feature is moving outblow. So that all purified air isn't blown out straight ahead. It's better if it's spread in the room with the help of a moving outblow unit.

That is just as effective as many of the purifiers on the market. Look at the Vornado air purifier. It is basically a plastic trash can with a furnace filter. The unit does not even have a a real hepa filter.
If you guys want to try a few models then just go to Bed Bath and Beyond because they have a nice selection and their return policy is really lax. None of what they sell actually do what they say they do though other than suck power, make noise, and take up space. |

I just picked up a Homedics Brethe Air Revitalizer ($49)
![]() I also got a Vornado Air Quality System 500 ($99) ![]() The Brethe Air Revitalizer is cool because it sucks the air in, runs it through water, and then out. You have to change the water every day. You can see that it works when you dump the water out. The Vornado is even better. It has a decent fan in it that really moves the air. It even has a quick clean mode that is loud but effective. The thing I like about both these units is that they are both very easy to clean. The first one you just dump the water out and the other one has these two big filters that you just need to replace twice a year. If you wanted to get one or both of these air purifiers, you can get them at Bed, Bath & Beyond. If you sign up for their newsletter on their site they send you a 20% off coupon to your email. ![]() ![]()

That vornado is the biggest joke ever. It is a plastic trash can with a fan and a really flimsy proprietary filter (they do this so you have to buy replacement filters from them. Just because the filters get dirty does not mean it is cleaning your air effectively. If you push dirty air through a paper towel it will eventually go black as well. The goal of air purification is so that almost all of the particles are removed from the air in the room whenever the unit is turned on. The vornado only removes down to 1 micron because it does not even have a hepa filter. The Honeywells and other cheap units remove down to .03 micron. 90% of the air particles are smaller than .03 micron so in reality you are not doing much to help youself. Some people will allergies have their symptoms relieved by these cheap units because it is just enough to allow them to sleep and function normally. I use air purifiers so my 6 month old daughter does not have to breathe this putrid Los Angeles air. People wonder how they get cancer.....
I do love the Vornado air circulators though. I have a small Vornado fan in each room so that my air purifier does not have to be turned up nearly as much to move the air around. Plus they feel really great in the summer and my air conditioning can stay off most of the time. |

Looks like the filter is on the outlet rather than the inlet? The latter would be better since it would help prevent the fan accumulating dust and other crap.
![]() I use a 3M product called Filtrete which is like a synthetic material that you place over your air conditioner inlet. I also use it on my central heating inlet. Once it darkens due to accumulation of crap you throw it away. |
