In San Diego every now and then we would feel one. Nothing big. The little ones are cool I think LOL. I'm sure a big one could be quite scary though.

It woke me up, but to be honest I had no idea why I woke up at that hour until I got into work and saw the chatter on FB about it.

My cat on the other hand was resting comfortably in bed throughout the quake.

How does a 4.4 feel then? I mean, is everything falling from the closets or is it just a mild shaking?

think it all depends where you are relative to the epic center
as i understand an earthquake spawns waves similar to those when you throw a stone into a lake, in the spots where the waves surface there is a greater movement and damages.
a 4.4 doesnt last very long, perhaps 10 seconds, it jolted my house initially and then rolled a few times, kinda feel like you are on a houseboat for a short instant except you hear the rumbling, doors and cabinets shake, lamps and hanging plants sway a little.
not a big deal, however there is always the thought it could be just the initial shaker and the big one is following..

There is quake insurance but since the Northridge earthquake the policies suck. High deductibles and not the best on replacement costs. If I'm correct there is also usually a moratorium of new policies being written following recent seismic activity

Yes there is, but it is pretty expensive, all things considered. I learned after the Sylmar Quake that the best way to do it is skip the insurance because if it is that bad it will be declared a disaster zone and very low interest loans are available. You end up with a better home.

yeah it was perhaps only 2-3 seconds come to think of it..
middle of the night and the fact that it feels like time stands still when the quake is happening probably biased my judgment of time...

The Good Friday Earthquake was originally recorded between 8.4 and 8.6 on the Richter Scale and later upgraded to a magnitude of 9.2.
