you guys bitch about cross sales? I just got tricked by Network Solutions...

So, I go in to transfer a few old domains over to NetSol.

I copy and paste the 6 domains, enter the transfer auth code for each and provide updated billing info and whatnot.

On the next page the domains are listed along with a "horizontal lever" next to each to control the number of renewal years.

So, I move the first domain's lever to 2 years and the rest of the domains get automatically shifted to 2 years.

Fine, somewhat logical.

Then I submit the order without paying close attention to the details on the confirmation page and guess what...

The levers represented ADDITIONAL YEARS on top of the standard 1-year renewal for each transfer.

So, we got dinged for 3 renewals per domain even though I thought I am specifying 2 years.

I can assure you thousands of NetSol customers are making the same mistake.

And guess what, I'm too busy to pick up the phone to deal with it.

This is hardly cross-selling to me, just up-selling, and you didn't pay attention on what is clearly written on your screen ... blame yourself!

don't get technical folks - they are similar - both are used to get the customer to spend more $$.

the issue is that they can be easily overlooked.

Agreed!

Yes, this was not like a cross sell but it certainly was disillusioning the customer. It obviously did not have a sign come up saying you have added 2 more years.

I suppose the only good thing here is, you can sit back and not worry about purchasing these sites in just 2 years

i dont think he actually claimed it was cross-selling, he said we bitch about cross-selling and showed how a mainstream site was tricky in its process.

If he was decieved it was deceptive, pretty simple to me. Like mcdonalds/burger king ads. The burgers are deceptive as you would never actually recieve a burger like that. Is it a crime ? maybe but probably not. Is it deceptive ? yes

There are obviously varying degrees of deceptiveness , some piss you off, some you can reasonably assume. Intent plays a big role too.

Like travel ads on tv for vegas or hawaii. They show the best of the best not the crackhead hookers shooting up in the alley's. The intent isn't to decieve but the reality is. With the burger ads the intent is too decieve but one can reasonably assume the burgers arent going to be the ones on the tv commercial.

I love the new "Express Payment" field when buying shit with godaddy.

What level was the lever at to start with?

I noticed that Moniker has a default term of 2 years when you renew, but at least it's clear what "2 years" means... I bet some people still get caught by that though...

GoDaddy was doing that precise thing for a while then stopped. NetSol is hurting for biz though - lots of other registrars taking biz from what used to be more or less a monopoly.

This is not cross-sell dummy. REAL Cross-sell would be if you got charged $159.00 by some hosting company in Cyprus with URL hlp-senter5098.com and cancel button that doesn't work.

It wasn't 3X more - it was 50% more.

For example, if the total was supposed to come out to $120, it came out to $180.

Easy to miss when you're multitasking.

Try joining ESPN to become an 'Insider'

They charge a recurring monthly fee and there is NO possible way to cancel online. To end your subscription you need to find a phone number in the small print, call and wait on hold for a few minutes... and then argue with a customer service rep until he/she agrees to cancel your account.

Yea, because trying to take money out of people's pocket by taking advantage of "things they didn't notice" is always how I'd like to pay my mortgage...

Wake up buddy, these practices are all around us (online porn, real estate, travel, etc.) - you yourself are profiting from these same practices whether you want to believe it or not.
