the slow death of Flash Video has begun...

"Apple has begun promoting Web pages that use HTML5-encoded video that it says will look and function "beautifully" on the iPad."

If Flash dies...it will be a VERY VERY VERY slow death.

Google has put Flash into the Chrome browser. No more need for a plugin.

encode everything into mp4 with a flash player that supports it, check for html5, and fallback to flash

For basic video HTML5 is fine. But when you need bandwidth negotiation, secure streaming, and other features that Flash video has grown into, it's less than attractive. So, no, Flash video isn't going anywhere.

Even the iPhone is over rated in my eyes. I always stuck with HTC. I think the motorola and samsung models are a lot better these days aswell. And Blackberry still kicks ass for being able to do a lot on the go.

No reason to buy and iPhone other than:

"oh look! cool! I can buy an app that measures my stupidity!!!! what a great idea!!!!" etc....

blargh! They're saying a tech that isn't even ready to roll out yet will work perfectly for their current product? Hmmmm... reminds me of Microsoft selling "Vista Ready" computers that weren't really.

Yes of course it is..but that means it has different uses.....reading newspapers.....and surfing is better as you dont have that small screen.....everyone knows its really only a blown up ipod touch but it opens up a new world.

Ps Im not a apple geek..i dont own any apple products....i just see its merits.

These products are already out there. The trend has been set, Apple is just playing now. You aren't predicting anything.

The newer releases of flash incorporate some pretty slick preprocessing and acceleration... I don't think we are seeing the end of flash video, I think we are at the tip of the iceberg...

Remember just a few years back when people thought flash was just a pretty little animation engine? Developers are just now beginning to exploit flash for what it's worth.

The core issue is that Flash is a 3rd-party plug-in. If you really think about it, the browser itself should have all those capabilities. Therein lies the reason why the slow shift has begun.

With this kind of market penetration I would gladly accept that non-issue... I wouldn't be surprised to see flash becoming bundled into core builds more and more soon.
Flash as a format has become very widespread on the desktop market and created a market dominance. General web statistics company estimates availability at 95%,[19] while Adobe claims that 98 percent of US Web users and 99.3 percent of all Internet desktop users have the Flash Player installed,[20][21] with 92%-95%[22] (depending on region) having the latest version. Numbers vary depending on the detection scheme and research demographics.

Which was referenced in the link I posted. Google is putting Flash RIGHT INTO THEIR BROWSER. No need for any plugins.

As has been pointed out. Flash isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.

The world will always see two large, leading corporations fight for their own standard. Remember the fight between JVC and their VHS tape competed against Sony and their Beta tape. Sony's technology with Beta tapes were widely outperforming the VHS, in quality, performance and sharpness in a way that made it the number one among all broadcast companies accross the nation and the globe.

Then we had the Vinyl against the CD, which wasn't really a fight and the CD was so superiooir in many ways that no one really could argue for the Vinyl.

You have DVD-R and DVD+R standards, still messing up for many who buys and burns DVDs at home.

Ericsson Telecom invented the Bluetooth protocol, together woth a large group of the worlds leading companies, like JVC, Sony, Toshiba and so on. Nokia for long didn't want to accept it since they had their own solution, but finally had to give in to the pressure from al the others.

We recently had the Blueray against the HD DVD, which looked a lot like the VHS against the Beta tape.

And now we most likely will have the Flash against HTML5, where Flash of course being supported by Adobe (duuh!) and probably Microsoft and Google too. Microsoft and Google not because they particularly like Flash, but more because they don't like Apple. And of tcourse then, in the other corner, we have Apple and the open public license community. An open code, that anyone can see, edit and take part in, will be popular among many but of course not among the large corporation's whose busines smodel is based on license fees.

So buckle up, we're in for a rouh ride where the two will live side by side for some time and then one will prevail. I have not sided yet, the heart says one thing and the mind says another. Let's see!

Commercial and broadcast decks used Beta I speed, and only very early consumer decks ever offered it. VCRs people could buy used Beta II and III, and Beta II was only marginally better than VHS SP speed.

In the end it NEVER was about picture quality, especially at a time when 30%+ consumers still didn't have a solid-state TV! - in those days you could still go to Radio Shack and get replacement tubes for your television. It was about marketing, and about add-on features, such as a timeshift timer, and larger physical cassette that could hold more tape.

There is no single company with marketing clout specifically pushing HTML5 to developers and users, but Adobe spends millions promoting it, and adding new features in their Flash developer apps. Video playback is a "freebie" for Adobe Flash Player. People will still install Flash to get the other RIA content, and they'll get video at no charge.

IOW, HTML5 is a non-issue when it comes to Flash.

pfft. The iPad will sell to Apple's cocksnorkling basement dweller fanboys. It is worthless as anything but a toy.

The iPhone and iTouch were impressive at launch, the iPad is just a joke.
