A house or a condo?

Which do you prefer to live in and why?

Houses.

Shared walls is for college.
A decent fenced yard, 2 large dogs, barbeque and a 3-car garage is for grown-up time.

I don't care as long as it doesn't come with monthly ASSociation fees.

Imagine a lot of people leave their homes in default and the ASSociation decides to raise your monthly fees to cover the debt left by others

Why not use the money you would pay on your condo dues to hire someone to cut your grass? Did you figure that in when you bought the house?

I loved condo living, no headaches, no hassles, lock the door and you have no worries you can be gone for months at a time. Perfect if you're single.

House living, there is always something to do, something to fix but if you're more than one person or have a pet it's worth the investment!

House.

Condo life was awesome when I was single. After a while I got tired of hearing doors slam @ 4am, waiting on the elevator, hearing or smelling my neighbors.

both have positives and negatives. nothing beats a huge 14 foot ceiling, exposed brick wall loft if you don't have kids imho.

Lived in both, condo when i was single and a house now that im married with kids. I would not live in a condo with a family. A house is alot of work but it's rewarding if you spend alot of time at home like we do having bbq's, small get together, using the pool, playing with the kids, etc. if you're single or don't have kids, condo is the way to go.

Just rent. A condo comes into more issues than you want to deal with with normal taxes and community bullshit rental fees and it's the same for those Cul De Sac houses.

Either buy real property that you solely own and don't have to sign any neighborhood agreements on or just rent so you can leave at the end of the lease.

I'd rather own a house, but rent a condo... Ideally rent out the house and rent a condo to live in.

I'm a house person, but for you- a single guy who travels alot, go with a condo. You don't have to worry about keeping the lawn, etc. Just alot less responsibility.

Depends on where. If Thailand, perhaps a condo because you can own it in your own name whereas a house must be in a Thai company name or the name of a Thai person as foreigners (farangs) can't own the sacred land.

Falang,
Since I know where you are, I suggest a Condo.

1) You can own a condo in YOUR name with ease.

2) Don't worry about the walls. Most proper built condos are built with Smart Blocks, Q-Con (or a variation of) that reduce noise. If you want more reduction, build another wall on the inside and leave about a 1 inch gap between the two. Very cheap to do and will make the noise pollution zero. You will lose a little room inside, around 6 inches total.

3) Security. In Thailand homes are always broken into. It's much harder to break into a higher floor condo. You CAN secure a house so they can not get in but if this is your first and you don't know anything about security, don't take that task on.

4) It's easer to resell a condo in Thailand vs a house.

5) You don't have to worry about taking care of a yard and all the crap that comes with it. Pay a small condo fee and don't worry about anything.

6) Location! You can get stunning sea view condos for somewhat cheap. Sea view homes are probably out of most peoples budget.

7) You can't toss a whore out of a 1 or 2 story house and kill her. If you live on say the 15th floor of a condo, she can have an "accident" and you will be clear, so long as she is piss drunk. The downside is, this can happen in reverse.

8) Back to ownership. While you can rope-a-dope a house, the title (chanote) can be in your name. Also, with shop houses, if there are 8 or more units, they can be considered a condo and you can own one of those. Less than 8 and it's a shop house. You can build the inside of a shop house to be the most wicked condo ever AND have a business in the bottom to make money with. Just be sure to add the extra layer of Q-Con blocks (in the living areas) to make it sound proof.

9) Back to security. In a home, thieves like to break through the roof, ripping the tile off and coming in through the roof. This happens often. I can tell you how to defeat them should you get a house but it's not cheap. They can't do this in a condo. You're pretty safe in there.

10) In a condo, with a higher floor, get a telescope and peep all the other condos out. You can see some GREAT fucking with whores, lots of guys leave the windows open.

Good luck!

Condo is a good way to get started building a little equity if youve never owned before. And in most cases you will be able to buy/live in an area that would might be out of your price range if you were house shopping. I did it for a few yrs when I was in my early 20s, didnt mind it at all. Once I got married and we wanted to have kids, I wanted Grass and a more neighboorhood feel, so I made the switch.

Good luck to you in your search

I've never lived in a Condo.

I own a condo; I rent it out to my friend. It's nice, but I couldn't imagine living there.

Same with Rio. Houses are a real security hazard even for Brazilians but a foreigner, forget about it.

You can always count on me for ways to kill Thai whores. I could write a book on the subject.

I would take a house 1st, a condo 2nd...but where I am looking it is out of my price range...leaning towards a co-op. In NYC suburbs its all about the school district...this is what you pay for here.

If I was you in Thailand I would stay renting.

This is also good advice given the current political situation. We don't know what property laws, if any, will change should a new party take control. We could all be left holding our cocks.

I always say to anyone investing in Thailand, to never invest more than you're willing to lose.
