Apple iPad Reaches ?One Million Sold? Twice as Fast as iPhone

Quote:
Apple announced on Monday that it has sold over one million iPad devices over the internet and in its retail outlets, following the Friday release of the 3G version of the device, which can connect to the internet via cellular data networks in addition to WiFi.

Naysayers who jokingly derided the device as a large iPhone with no phone function have been proven wrong about people not wanting exactly that ? a testament to the powerful allure of these devices, which sit in a new category of computing somewhere between the smartphone and the netbook.

?One million iPads in 28 days ? that?s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,? said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. ?Demand continues to exceed supply,? he claimed, ?and we?re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.?

This 28-day figure doesn?t seem quite as impressive if you correlate the 3G iPad to the iPhone, and the WiFi-only iPad to the WiFi-only iPod Touch, because the iPhone and iPod Touch reached the combined one million mark about as fast as the iPads did. In addition, Apple said it shipped 500,000 units of the WiFi-only iPad within the first week, so sales have slowed since then, relatively speaking, even with Friday?s introduction of the 3G model.

Regardless, this announcement marks a big vote of confidence by consumers. Nearly one out of every 300 Americans already owns one of these devices.

That isn?t just good news for Apple, but also for myriad companies hoping to capitalize on the iPad?s potential for e-books, interactive music, magazines, (non-Flash) video, games, and so on. Its fast arrival at this milestone is an early sign that iPad adoption will reach levels where designing custom apps for the platform ? and gambling on whether Apple will approve or reject them ? makes sense on a business as well as an aesthetic level.

The iPad might just be a giant iPhone, but size matters when it comes to many potential applications. For instance, who wants to read War and Peace on an iPhone?

So far, Apple says, iPad users have downloaded over 12 million apps from its App Store and over 1.5 million e-books from the iBookstore, via WiFi or wireless data connection. In the U.S., the latter means using either AT&T?s high-speed 3G network or T-Mobile?s slower 2G network with a trimmed-down SIM card.

After demand for the iPad apparently outstripped supply, Apple delayed the device?s European rollout until the end of May.

So far, Apple has sold nearly 90 million iPhone OS devices worldwide, and recently announced its iAd platform, which will allow developers to monetize free applications.

And 1 million USB ports are wandering the streets looking a shiny, yet crippled system to call home!

I think it will continue to do well. it is not about what we think about the iPad it is whether these hipster types like it.

With coffee shops still basically 3 on every corner i can only see the iPad crowd getting bigger.

You previous comment insinuated that the USB interface was going the way of the 3.5" floppy. That is definitely not the case.

Apparently Jobs thinks you'll need USB someday, or else they wouldn't have been so kind to create a proprietary adapter, to nickle and dime you with, that brings your 'tablet pc' (lol) into the modern computing age of 1996 by adding USB functionality.

Honestly, I liked the iphone, but I really can't see why I'd want a crippled netbook. Good luck to them, but I sure as heck won't be buying one.

The thing about able is that it can sell anything. Microsoft and PC promoted the Tablets years ago without success. It only take able 28 days to sell a million of them.

So you can't think of a SINGLE device I would need it for.

Sorry, what was your point then? Exactly?

"The iPad doesn't have something I can't think of a reason it would need something for?"

Wowzers. You are l33t.

In other news, the iPad will also NOT, I repeat NOT, have a serial connection and you will not be able to install Debian on it.

They are on a roll. And almost every product a Mac fan buys, they will go out and buy the same product every time a new one comes out.

They have great products.

Marketing is about creating and selling an impression - and this is a great example how a company with major know how can be extremely successful in marketing a totally useless device

Apple deserves a big A for exploiting the whole iVogue

I don't know why people credit Apple with marketing with things like the iPad and iPhone. They simply got tens/hundreds of millions of people addicted to iPods then leveraged their customer base to buy something else shiny. What they did with iPod was more amazing than both of these combined IMO and is the single reason they're a relevant company today.

I LOL when people talk about how the iPad will mark the death of flash... hahahhahaa...

The iPad will make up 1% of the computer market. Sure, you can make 100's of millions on that 1%, but it won't change anything for Flash...
