Producers of The Hurt Locker suing thousands of illegal downloaders

I just saw this and thought it was pretty interesting. It looks like the producers of the movie The Hurt Locker are filing suit against tens of thousands of people who illegally downloaded the movie.

Good to see someone going after these people.

from the article-
"According to lawyers at Dunlap's firm, 75 percent of ISPs have cooperated fully. Those that have resisted are mostly doing so, they say, because of the amount of work involved in handing over thousands of names. But the clock may be ticking. For example, in the lawsuit over "Far Cry," Comcast has until next Wednesday to file motions to quash subpoenas. (Here's the stipulation by the parties.) By the end of next week, thousands of Comcast subscribers could be turned over."

holy shit. this could have huge repercussions in zee pirate world.

Downloads of long movies are a problem. I just think that Youtube really does have some content for which it gets sued.

At this point I don't know. The article doesn't really say. I would assume that they will offer to settle with anyone who admits their guilt and wants to settle, but I have no idea for how much.

Sounds like they got about $2500 out of the people that settled over the shitty Uwe Boll movies they sued over, if you can believe their press releases. This is the same company sending out these settlement letters, so I would imagine they will go for the same amount.

None of the cases have gone to court yet, they are just scaring people into paying at this point.

Also looks like they are only suing those in the US. At least those are the only ISPs mentioned in the cases so far. None of the ISPs in Canada would turn over information the last time the RIAA did this, except for Videotron in Quebec.

There are many people who don't have wifi. . . so that wouldn't exactly work. Also, I think each computer has its own IP address when connected to your ISP (I may not be 100% accurate on that though). If that is the case, then they would be able to tell it was your computer.

I did too, grabbed it on Bluray...but I also downloaded it a few months back to see what all the fuss was about. Watched about 15 minutes and decided I'd wait to buy the HD version.

I have a HUGE Bluray collection and download 1080p versions of all the titles I own for use on my own computers. Right or wrong, I guess that's always gonna be debatable.

While it's obvious people are abusing the system, there are legal and legit reasons for the system to exist.

no, you have an IP address for your connection to your ISP.. its either static or dynamic..

mine is dynamic so it changes regularly.. I wonder if they date stamp the IP they capture from the torrent data.

funny I bet tons of people on gfy have downloaded hollywood movies.. and in this case, the hurt locker

the open wifi defense might work.. ever download something using someone else's wifi? who hasn't..

I would guess that they timestamp when your connection has what IP. Like you mine is dynamic and changes all the time. It is kind of a bitch because I sometimes have a voice chat server on it for a game I play and I have to update it when it changes.

The wifi connection might work, but I would bet for some of those people they would just call their bluff and tell them they didn't believe them.
