At least one Biologist is saying that the dispersants

...being used on the oil slick in the Gulf is more dangerous than the oil itself. He stated that up to 12,000 square miles of coral will probably be killed because of the dispersant being used...and as a result of the death of the coral...many other species of life will die. He also stated that the coral provides us with many of the meds we use (for cancer...aids...pain etc.)...something that I was not aware of at all...and that the death of the coral will affect the availability of the meds. He said that the damage that is being done by the spill and the dispersants is priceless and is going to be a major...major catastrophe...for hundreds if not thousands of years to come.

a quick read shows it's 350 acres, does that = 12,000 square miles?

No...but he was talking about the current taking it into the Atlantic...and up to 12,000 sqaure miles of coral being killed.

They need to get that leak fixed stat. This is a huge disaster.
Corals are like the old canary in a mine, if they start to die the destruction grows exponentially.

Yes...according to him the death of the Coral...will be the most tragic event due to the dispersants being used.

That's interesting. I didn't know/think about the coral.

i didn't really do a search but i came across something that makes me think that is correct

frankly i'm very intrigued about the straw solution for clearing out the oil.. it's a little slapstick, but if anyone decided to look into how straw does that, i bet they could come up with something even cheaper and more applicable

They should be dropping Hummers on the leak, pile 10,000 hummers on it then nuke them like the south pacific atolls you yankes wiped out.

That will stop it flowing

I think BP is trying to pull a fast one. Pumping dispersants at the source reduces the oil that collects at the surface so the spill doesn't look as bad. But the oil stays in the currents and on the ocean floor for much longer.

It's better to just let the oil come to the shore and get it over with so the eco system can recover.

BP has been lying since the very start of this, I have no idea why they are allowed to lead this operation still. Not only that, dispersants being used in this quantity is unheard of, so now BP is being allowed to conduct an experiment on a grand scale with huge implications for millions of people and years to come. Why are they being trusted to do this?

"BP, the oil group battling to stem a 1,000 barrel-a-day leak in the Gulf of Mexico after a rig caught fire and sank, reported that first-quarter profits have more than doubled."
