Male Pattern Baldness
Anyone had any hair transplant surgery?
WAs just reading up on it, seems like it can be painful afterwards with a lot of potential folicle infections. Not looking forward to going bald! |

I saw on jon and kate plus 8 that the hair in the folicle that they relocate dies and falls out which freaks people out... however, the folicle is fine and will regrow a new hair after a couple of months.

a good friend of mine with deep pockets spent the ten grand and got it done. however, the surgery seems unsuccessful almost a year and a half later. more growth, but still very thin. seems like a huge waste of money.

![]() ![]() Modern hair transplants do work and can look completely natural, but get a good doctor. This is not something you want to skimp on. Expect it take about a year before you see the full effects of the procedure. Hair cloning will be common place in 5 years. Then the issue of donor hair and scarring will become moot. |

I had it done, about 3 years ago. I'm 27 now but my hair was thinning back then.
It's worked great. None of the problems with infection or follicles falling out. You do have to follow instructions very closely. No sex, alcohol, drugs, or exercise allowed 1 week before and after the surgery. I think you have to watch certain vitamins intake. It cost almost 6 grand for the procedure. It's slightly cheaper these days, maybe 10-15% from 5 years ago. And if you aren't already taking propecia, start it. You'll be taking that drug until you die. I recommend it! Medical Hair Restoration and Bosley from the TV ads both have good doctors, but you should research each individually. |

I'm not sure if the follicle falls out, but the hair falls out soon after being transplanted, but then it regrows from that transplanted follicle. For most middle aged men, 2-3 procedures should give you a very satisfying full head of permanent hair! |

I heard this about 5 years ago that it would be 10 years, and when I went in for a consult recently, I was told they're quite a bit further off than originally expected. So who knows. I haven't seen any good articles backing up hair cloning for practical purposes. We can hope, but not expect. |

That propecia stuff scares me. When the commercial voice over says "women who are pregnant or who are thinking of becoming pregnant should not touch the pill" then you REALLY have to wonder what's in that thing.

I had a friend sink into a pretty deep depression while taking propecia and nearly kill himself. As soon as he came off it he bounced back pretty quickly. I guess it depends on the individual, but you always have to be careful with mediciations.

Propecia is the best preventative measure, and it's also the best, proven method to regrow hair as per the FDA and any doctor I've ever talked to.

I've got a full head of hair but shaved it bald for 10 years. I let it grow out 2 years ago and still haven't had it cut at all. It's approaching Jesus stage about now and driving the wife mental. Her fault though she told me to stop shaving it.
But if I was balding I wouldn't care. Just shave it off and embrace your slaphead.. |

Propecia can work for some by blocking conversion of testosterone to DHT via the 5ar enzyme. The problem with this, is that DHT is an important hormone and lowering those levels, systemically, is kind of like using a sledge hammer to kill an ant.
DHT is an androgenic hormone, responsible for aggression, sex drive, etc. Screwing with DHT via Propecia can contribute to depression, sexual impotence, memory fog, cognition issues, etc. Be careful with that shit. I'd rather be bald than have a full head of hair without any interest in having sex. There is no FDA approved topical anti-androgen available... so rather than being able to put some kind of cream on your scalp to block DHT in an isolated area... people are left to take a pill that blocks conversion to DHT throughout their entire body. |
