What is the worst concert you have been to?
I have been lucky that most of the concerts I have gone to have been pretty good and some have been beyond excellent. Every now and then one is such a stinker.
By far, I have to say the worst gig I ever went to (and yes, it is embarassing to even say) was Hootie & The Blowfish at the Mann Center in Philly. It was the first show of the first nationwide tour and my sister wanted to go. It was also the day after my high school graduation. It isn't my kind of music but I can go to gigs of bands I don't particularly like but recognize they did a good job. Nope, Hootie really was that bad. So, what is the worst concert you have been to? |

I went to see The Cure at the Hammersmith. Unfortunately we were right at the back having bought tickets late on in the piece, and it looked like I was watching TV, the stage was so small, and the sound wasn't ported properly. No atmosphere whatsoever.

Really? The Cure is the last band left on my 'must see before I die' list and I have been finding it so difficult to get tickets to them whenever they actually play London (which isn't often). Was it just how far back you were rather than the band?

That's simple, by a far and massive margine, no other choice possible...
I went to a summer rock fest like three years ago, and I'm usually interested in say 20 pct. of the bands, but I get to see plenty others too cause I'm curious. So I also happened to be present when the last band I'd ever pay for played, I spent most of the time at a bar in the concert area and only watched it live on a plasma while hanging out with friends ![]() If this ain't graphic enough I'll add: - they played for like 4 hours - total assholes, the whole program got delayed - including about 30 minutes of thanks to the sponsors - including like 30 minute bass solo - ... Yeah, Manowar really full filled all the expectations I had...

I was 15 and sneaked off to London on a school night to see Desmond Dekker, the last train home left at midnight.. the concert started at 9.30. The shittest support band ever not even reggae/ska played until 11.30 I got 1 song of Desmond Dekker then had to get the train.

Ozzy Osbourne, Bark at the Moon tour, UIC Pavillion in Chicago, 1986 (I think).
Metallica opened (Master tour -- with Cliff Burton!!!). Ozzy was headliner. When Ozzy finally came out they played one song -- Bark at the Moon. The entire song we could see Jake puking behind the PA. He played surprisingly well while yakking...but at the end of the song Ozzy said Jake had a medical issue and the concert was over. I didn't realize, at the time, being drunk off your ass was a medical issue. |

got dragged in to see my chemical romance (almost vomited typing that)
My cousin said he wanted to go see them live with his wife in detroit but was afraid to go by themselves so I told him I'd go over with them watch the game at the hockeytown cafe and meet them when they get out, unfortunately he heard me as: 'hell yeah i want a ticket!' We end up hitting the border at least 4 hours before the show which i thought was a little silly considering i only live about 10 minutes away from the venue so I figured we'd hit up some food in the meantime.. NOPE! Apparently his wife is the BIGGEST FAN IN THE WORLD of this shitbag band and, at that point, never even heard of. So when we walked by the venue and she spotted their trailer she parked her self in front of it and began crying... yes CRYING! (27 years old) I thought she was scared, saw a dead body, saw someone get stabbed, but NO she was crying because she was THAT close to the band. Now i was stuck there in downtown detroit with a crying 'adult' and my cousin just looks at me and shrugs his shoulders the whole time saying 'i don't know man... she's just a big fan'. On a funny side note this is the point where i realized that my cousin had the EXACT same haircut as the lead singer, which i found pretty amusing! Waited 3 hours in line to get into the damn place (people were camped out, yes in DETROIT) We get in and i'm surrounded by 14 year old screaming girls and i'm sitting by the back wall with all the dads scratching my head wondering what went wrong with my life... oh and the music was terrible, like if bon jovi had a boy band when he was younger. worst concert ever...

I was given a ticket to see Pearl Jam in San Diego in '95 or '96, and I was totally underwhelmed by them, and thought the technical aspects of the show, i.e., the sound, was at best amateurish.

one of the worst concerts was at the L.A. forum- Styx with The Cars opening. With both bands the sound was fucking horrible, we left before styx ended.

Most support acts aren't great. Even if they are otherwise a good band the sound stuff is never set up properly for them. What I hate, is that my favourite band always has two support acts. Like we need that much delay before who we paid for comes on to play.

I've been to well over a hundred concerts and started saving the ticket stubs after the first twenty or so and I've got them all framed in a nice collage hanging on the wall
![]() The worst one for me was Aerosmith in 1978 at the Hollywood Sportatorium in south Florida. They had the volume turned up as high as it could go and it was completely distorted to the point where some songs were almost unrecognizable. |

Def Leppard. Not that I was expecting it to be any good. It's just we don't get many concerts in this area so I tend to go to almost all the rock ones.
Billy Idol opened for them, it should have been the other way around. He put on a way better show. We walked out half way through Def Leppard. The lead singer was fat and would do these little spins on stage that made him look homosexual. And I think on most of the songs they weren't actually singing, or sometimes even playing for real. It was all a back track. |

I went to a David Lee Roth concert once on the spur of the moment with a kid who had a spare ticket. Was more of a "yeah I guess so" idea.
About 1 minute into the first song, all the houselights come on and rent-a-cops come in through all the doors and start grabbing people who were smoking weed. It was the stupidest damn thing you ever saw. All these kids dressed like Barney Fife haluing off a bunch of normal kids trying to have a little fun at a rock concert. This was in the Reagan years of "just say no" to drugs. We all know how well that worked.

Ozzy in '83... he was fat, drunk, and not very good.
Uriah Heap w/ Def Leppard... Lep was great, UH never played. (1983) Queensryche with AC/DC... AC/DC was fantastic, but the speaker stacks blew over early while they were setting up and injured a band member so, Queensryche never played. (1986) Eddie Rabbit at the World's Of Fun in Kansas City, (late 1991 I think) just because it was there. ![]() Day On The Green in San Jose in '99 or 2000... filthy, stinking, moshing drunk animals and music from the various bands all sucked. Dave Mustaine was fucking drunk. Sammy Hagar was good, but last.

For me its always been those festival venues. I remember going to the Free Tibet festival in NYC in say about 98 and it was aweful. Good bands but the sound was horrible, sets were short and the crowd was lame.

![]() Mostly, I have been fairly lucky at getting into bands, such as my second favourite band , when they are playing super small gigs and then following them through the years from venue to venue until they are suddenly playing big stadiums. It feels weird when you remember a band playing to a handful of people with no stage set behind them and then years later you are seeing them in some massive venue with pyros. |

I had what could have been the worst turn into one of the best ever.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (opening act Lone Justice!) at the Greek in Berkeley, CA. around 86. The played one song and there was a problem with the lights...the band had to leave the stage for about 30 minutes while they tried to fix things. You could feel the energy leaving the crowd as the wait got longer and longer... Finally they came back out, apologized and played for about 3 frickin hours of the best shit you have ever heard! I will be a TP fan for life! |

You know, I was thinking that I had very few lead acts that sucked, but Leon Russell pretty much did. It was circa 1972 and he had discovered religion and decided we should too.
As far as lead acts, two that stick out are Edgar Winter (brought his brother Johnny out, so we were treated to two albinos screaming at each other) and Fuel (they sucked so bad I went to sleep and told my daughter to wake me when it was over). |

For me, the worst was REM, hands down.
It was sometime in the 90s, can't recall when exactly. I was never that into REM to begin with, but a bunch of my friends were going, and one of them picked up the tab for my ticket. I liked a few tunes from their first couple albums, so I thought 'what the hell, it's free' and I tagged along. Their guitar player was barely present; he looked almost as bored as I was. They had a guy on stage with them playing guitar, mandolin and a few other instruments; they never introduced him -- and he was clearly the best musician on the stage! (Not that this is saying much where REM is concerned) In between listless versions of their best-known tunes, Michael Stipe spent most of the time lecturing the audience on political issues, and exhorting us all to stop at the Greenpeace booths that were out front, so we could "educate ourselves." It was equal parts boring and condescending -- a lot like going to church, come to think of it.
