Technically he is responsible, when he was running for office he clearly said anything that happens under his watch will and would be his administrations responsibility. He appointed the new director of the Minerals Management Service and she reported to him according to what he said after her stepping down. Minerals Management Service knew of the problems going back to February and did nothing...all under Barrys administration and people he appointed to the position.

this is just my feelings on the matter, the oil disaster really changed my views on the guy. i never had a boner for the obama but i did give him 1.5 years...and now with MMS and the gulf, i feel like giving up onhim, i really do.

Policy wise, I don't agree with everything Obama has done, however policy wise he hasn't really done anything that has damaged us.

To me it isn't so much about if things have improved, its that he stopped the crazy fast downfall that was happening. I don't expect our Country to turn around until we set the standard for another new technology, like we did in the 90's.

If our Country would truly move green, we already do wonders in solar energy... we just need to explode this Industry, set the standard across the world, own the technology, etc. And we will be back on our feet.

As for banking, they dig their own graves - bad business is bad business. Local credit unions aren't having any of the problems the national banks are.

Stock market wise, it's a total fake, speculation, trash... I hope it crash and burns.

Why the boner on Obama with the gulf? Only so much he can actually do... and they have said the solution is a relief well, everything else is for show. It's our entire Gov's fault that we don't have a national plan of attack on shit like this... but then again we don't have them for any major natural disasters. Probably because our people go shit over more taxes, for sure anything that could help others.

i hear ya re: green energy. was reading some studies that stated the solar panel/batteries industry will increase from $4b to $23+b by 2014 so i do think there is opportunity for change.

my issue with obama and the gulf stems from several things- his complete lack of overhauling the MMS when he entered office and the appointment of salazar to run it is/was inexcusable. his politicizing the catastrophe in his speech to set up pushing through cap&trade, his pr gaff of golfing this weekend sends the wrong message, the lack of his *kicking butt* to lead a change in oil industry legislation and the $20b bp escrow is not in accordance with the powers of the president. oh and the moratorium on drilling was short sighted and still allows rigs like the atlantis to operate.

all of those combined cause my disappointment in how he is handling the issue.

Give it sometime... the Oil Industry is America, and just cutting the head off this beast will probably just enrage it. However I do agree that this should have been corrected when he first came in, and more regulation is needed, now - before this happens again.

But I also know how tied to the Oil Industry our entire Gov is, so I'm willing to wait and see how this plays out a bit more. Sad as it is to say, I think we're going to need this disaster to get worse before the pressure can really be turned up.

We do not vote in a dictator, we vote in a president. A president will be the de-facto "leader" for 4 to 8 years.

My guess is, as soon as you become president you are sat down, and you are told how the game works.

It is likely irrelevant what the person elected as the temporary leader really wants to do - the system is much bigger than the person.

The oil industry for example, has been around much longer, and is waaaay more powerful than any one person, so we never really switch out oil for alternate energy options in any big way.

For better or for worse, no ONE person walks in out of nowhere, and gets to call the shots.

Unless the President is already well connected (ie Bush Senior, previous head of the CIA - Bush W, tied to oil like white on rice), it is very difficult to get anything done.

The graphic is from the url you posted... it shows jobs lost, per your example - not as many jobs are being lost under Obama. It's easy to understand.

If you want to talk about unemployment numbers, they are higher today, we had a lot of jobs lost. However the decline has stopped, and they're now slowly improving - which every economist says is a very slow process.

You said Obama made things worse, and thus far you have not proven that.
