do they offer some kind of api where they can post the data to you on sign up?

anyone use this to add them to a newsletter? any recommened services to do this or is it all done custom/internal mailing tools?

I'd be very wary of adding people to a newsletter that aren't expecting to be added.

3 rules that make email work:

Personal
Relevant
Anticipated

if they buy a video or whatever (think something like clips4sale vid) for a small certain niche and the email was somewhat personal i don't think it would push customers away tbh.

if on the 'thanks for buying' type of page there was just a form that let people sign up most wouldn't bother to put their email in to sign up IMO. (maybe putting a fake one so people always are signed up to a newsletter but some believe they manually signed up (should comply with spam laws cos they've made a purchase))

Yes,

Actually, you can add two (2) postback URL's within CCBill admin. So the second postback could just be a xml, htaccess, whatever file that CCBill can pass back any information they have collected. I think the only thing they won't pass back is the credit card information and an unencrypted password. If you ask really nicely they may even create the postback file for you. Any programmer could do it in 5 minutes as well.

All research on this disagrees with you!

Of course. Because they don't want to get your emails. Think about how you can make them want to get your emails. Basically, it boils down to bribery. Offer them something they want. Discount, exclusive content, zip gallery, etc etc. The more niche you are, the more they are likely to want to hear from you with a weekly newsletter. Make sure the newsletter actually has content they want and not just spam.

It does comply with spam laws, but it will give you a non-responsive list, so it's fairly pointless mailing them. A good double opt in list will give you open rates of around 25%. A list like you are talking about mailing, you'd be lucky to get 2%. But the lack of response isn't the only issue. The reputation of your IP will be at risk because lots of people will report it as spam. Your reputation as a brand will be at risk because customers will view you as a spammer, whether you are within the law or not. You'll be wasting your time sending to a non-responsive list and your open and CTRs will plummet.

This is, of course, just my experience after 10 years of mailing. Feel free to ignore my advice.
