I did 5 months on a 65 foot sailboat when I was 19 - a tad different, I know, but I want to both do that and be 19 again!!!

Good for them! My favorite quote from the article is:

I don't know if this is true, just some story I heard, but they grabbed some guy that they found out he was gay, stuck him in an empty torpedo tube, then cycled the tube next to it, the guy had a heart attack and died

Another story In know is true, they can't shoot a body out of a torpedo tube, they tried to commit a body to the sea and when they shot him out, well they had to dry dock to clean up the mess. The pressure is just too much

Dave - My neighbors in LA left a year ago for a two year sailing trip in the South-Pacific with their two kids. Boat schooling all the way. That said, they did that from home before they left anyways, so I think it is "the kind of people".

Nice if you're a retired couple with an empty nest - but completely inappropriate if you have young kids IMHO. Where's their adolescent social development when the only people they can talk to is their own family?

Their 22 year old daughter might be a virgin... and you'd sure hope their 18 year old one is!

That's assuming they didn't have holiday romances at each port...

I'm pretty sure that they didn't spend 7 years at sea the entire time. Chances are that they would be a sea for an month at most, arrive somewhere, stay for a while, then move on to the next port.

A great way for the kids to really see the world and experience different cultures as travelers, not tourists.

.

Actually, my wife and I have our sights set on a 47 foot catamaran trawler, and doing something similar.

That's the dream, for sure. I think they usually call it retirement, though. For the sailing types, a couple of adventures where couples took off to trek around the world in catamarans.

Bumfuzzle

Slapdash

I don't think I could spend years on something as small as a boat without the other people driving me nuts and vice versa.

That sounds amazing.

And you are right, as it says in the article they would spend time on different islands, doing camping, hiking, learning about local customs and such. It seems their longest stretch was staying in New Zealand for 18 months. They said they would have stayed even longer but for paperwork difficulties.

They started out in the Caribbean, sailed through the Panama Canal, all over the South Pacific, Indian Ocean, back across the Atlantic...what an adventure!
