Well?

I'm very curious and tempted to drop phones altogether. My minutes are consistently between 7-50 each month. I have about 342,611 rollover minutes built up. I don't text. I don't have a data plan at all. I never set up the voicemail feature, so there's no voicemail.

I'm thinking I might literally not need a phone.

Is this unheard of?

Do you live completely alone and have no reason to contact anyone? I couldn't imagine being without a smartphone nowadays, much less not even have any phone. Being a producer I need to be in contact with models, crew, clients, and all kinds of other people, not to mention needing to communicate for other business and personal reasons. Technology and cell plans are so cheap nowadays.

I agree, but I'm at my comp all day. Everyone I know has email. Plus there's messageboards and blogs and all kinds of shit online as well as the instant messenger of your flavor.... I'm trying to think of one thing I absolutely must have a phone for, other than emergencies.... and I can't think of a single thing.

Until I worked at my 2nd telco job, I never had a cell. I only had gotten one then because they made me....ss I was out in the territory. Otherwise would not have had one. When I left, was still under contract. Then GF wanted me to switch to AT&T, so I did. Even though I almost never used phone. Other than to get her calls.

Even before I finally had it cut off. I did more texting than anything, and even then it was RECEIVING them. I had destroyed phone one day, and simply had it cut off and not replaced.

Sure. There are some conveniences I miss. But overall, I do not like being that accessible.

cell phone or home phone? Cell phones aren't needed in my life, in fact every time I give people my cell phone number I groan, I really would rather wait to talk to people at home. I do love my smartphone otherwise, and wouldn't cancel my cell service since it's not killing me financially.

I would go with T-mobile for prepaid, you buy the minutes and then when you run out, you can just call and reload fairly easily.

The effects of cellphones on teenagers are useless to me. But I was thinking more like, no phone at all. No home landline either. Would probably have to hook up Skype or something just to have a number for online forms and whatnot. Sort of like still having a phone, but not really.

I dont have a cell anymore... I have a house phone and a business (phonesex) line.

If I am away from my house and business its because I do not want to talk to anyone who might want to reach me.

My kids all have cells... I take them out for dinner or whatever they text the entire time. I could buy them takeout McDonalds and eat alone... Save money. They are teens 19, 17, almost 16. (Though I can drink wine and make them drive home).

Man i dont know if that is smart or sad .... but hey whatever makes you happy

i think about it before but so many people call and i have family away so i cant stop using all types of phones

When we moved to saskatoon one of my sons had the phone rining off the hook from teenybopper girlies calling every 5 minutes.

He actually went to school and stood up in front of class to make an announcement for the girls to all stop calling him. (it was distrubting his homelife).. The teacher thought it was hilarious. This was grade 8.

Alright, so that's a fair chunk of data so far.... obviously it's possible because it's been done in the past long before Internet or phones of any kind, some here are doing it already or very close to it, but how does this fit in with the new self-sustaining / green / off-the-grid trend that's been forming? If you go off grid, generate your own power, grow or partially grow your own food, etc.... do you stay connected to a phone network? I know I would want to stay connected to the Internet, even if satellite was the only option. Again, it seems like a prepaid kept in a kitchen drawer would suffice for the emergency requirement.

I live with my brother he has a phone if I need to call some one I can. Its so liberating to be off the grid in that sense no nagging calls.
As for emergencies unless you go out to the bush then your ok, My buddy and me did a test to make a point about how many people have phones. He pretended to trip in public on a sidewalk and I yelled does anyone have a phone! 22 people within 60ft had phones. To there surprise we counted them and got up and walked away.
So I say to everyone unplug for a day (except the internet) and you will feel so good.
