hey, did y'all ever figure out if walmart is good or bad for america?

i hadn't been to a walmart in years, went to my local one and was impressed, super low prices, super clean and a lot of busy worker bees working away.

example: bananas were 30c/pound v. 67c/pound at the local grocer.

Walmart is the champion of success for capitalism, this is why liberal shit stains like AMP dont like them.

You are right, very low prices and puts a lot of people to work.

I just wish they would sell more American made products.

I avoid Wal Mart like herpes.

My wife shops there for food, but only early in the morning. Before the idiots wake up.

there are no more idiots at walmart than there are at vons, ralphs, food4less, albertsons, etc. everybody has to get their groceries.

in fact, i was 2nd in line to check out at walmart and another cashier approached me and let me know her line was empty.

all in all a very good shopping experience!

I shop walmart, to help keep those kids in 3rd world countries and China employed.
My gf was unemployed for over a year(applied to a shit load of places) and finally got a job at walmart and loves working there. I do most of my shopping at the local mom and pop places

Asda (Wal-Mart's UK bit) is for pikey scum. But they do seem to have good deals on alcohol quite often. Dilemma.

Speaking of bananas, WalMart sells more bananas than anything else and considering WalMart is the largest retailer in the world, bananas must be the #1 product in the world.

Whoda thunk?

well, @ .30c/pound i believe it. good looking and tasty bananas too, the local grocers all carry already ripened ones, last about 2 days at +2x the price

Wrong. I go to other stores that aren't run by evil corporations like Wal-Mart.

Prices are no higher, and in fact, less where I shop.

to answer the question of is wal mart good for America... no it is not. They do not support other American run businesses, their employees are under paid and given part time only positions to avoid benefits, hours are cut regularly, they employ illegal methods to avoid unionization and they hurt, not help the overall economy.

Yeah, they are inexpensive and while they cannot be blamed for the disintegration of the middle class; they and companies like them play the biggest role in sending jobs to other countries.

i don't understand what makes walmart evil? they are the largest employer in the country, sans the military, run a case study worthy business, promote from within and offer the lowest prices available. as i understand it, the issues are

1. they run mom & pops out of business. well, that's the system and i'd wager they ultimately employ more than all the mom & pops that can't compete and add more to the local economy as well as the overall economy.

2. slave labor. i've heard the stories, but the fact is they promote almost exclusively from within and when you have 150,000 people on the payroll, some of those peeps are going to have a problem and make that public.

3. chinese products. they're retailers not true manufacturers, they sell what's all ready made, it's not really there fault shit gets produced in china.

could be wrong but that's how i see it all.

That sounds like every other retailer to me.

At least they are selling their products cheaply and not like the so called luxury brands that employ the same tactics except selling things cheaply and generally only benefit the designer and/or shareholders.

oh, don't get me wrong, i am a big believer in everybody gets their own opinion, i'm not trying to sway anyone or come across like it's my way or the highway.

i recall watching that doc and actually started this thread to get an update of opinions with that doc/perspective in mind. there was a large backlash against walmart at that time and i wondered if it was still the same for people.

1) running mom and pops out of business... while this is a problem is it not a main one, that's competitive business. The point is they have eliminated jobs by the hundreds of thousands and it creates a void. The manufacturing that goes with the products they sell is not in the US, so they are killing both businesses and jobs at the same time

2)I have 2 family members currently employed at Wal Mart... understand they have not hired full time employees for a very long time. They would be required to provide benefits to those employees if they were full time. They pay just over minimum wage which is well below a living wage and no benefits. This is done systematically... as for promoting from within, just how many managers do you think a store has? My family members work at a wal mart that has gotten awards for Home Town Store of the Year for 2 years in a row. Hours have been cut dramatically, below 20 hours a week at times because they arbitrarily decided to cut payroll by $20K with sales in the store going up.

3) You miss the point, the fact that other companies have chosen to outsource all manufacturing in the US has damaged the middle class in this country almost beyond repair. Manufacturing companies used to create good paying jobs with benefits that allowed households to have one wage earner. This was particularly important if the wage earner was suddenly unable to work, there was a safety net of a second worker available to go out and find work to help with the finances until the primary was able to return to work.

It is inconceivable to Americans in this day and age to even fantasize about a single wage earner making enough to support a middle class family and it is a direct result of American corporations like Wal Mart pretending to be Patriotic as hell, red white and blue this and that while fucking over the American worker and economy. The standard of living for the average American worker has dropped substantially over the last 30 years

thats not the point, the fact that everyone does it and some do it worse does not make doing it at all acceptible. The question was 'is wal mart good for America?' ......no it is not good for America

aside from not being good for America in a broad sense, if you can't tell the difference between the crap walmart sells and quality items from elsewhere, then you deserve walmart.

actually, none of that has anything to do with walmart. it's myopic to think walmart is to blame for manufacturing moving out of the u.s. it's also not accurate to state walmart costs america 100,000s of thousands of jobs, that's just not true.

i also think minimum wage is perfectly adequate for the tasks those sorts of employees do, it's not rocket science and quite frankly, considered menial labor.

the fact that the cost of living is disproportionate to wages is also not the fault of walmart. moreover, they're not an altruistic charity, they are a business, it's not their responsibility to save those who are not surviving on one wage, far from it.

that's no different than walmart. some people find subpar products & subpar food acceptable. those that don't, buy better quality items & food elsewhere.

there will always be a market for all grades of things. it's why people pay extra for First Class. Walmart & McDonalds just cater to the lowest level of acceptable standards by hooking people with garage sale prices.
