Looks like she took it legally. You don't have to agree with her methods of taking the animal but gators don't have many natural predators in that area and hunting seasons are necessary.

For those that are real upset about this you should see the show Swamp People. http://www.history.com/shows/swamp-people these guys fill hundreds of gator tags each year. In one of the episodes they took a huge 12 footer (nothing close to this woman's though).

I know I saw the story on another site, and they said that the ironic thing was there was only 40 lbs of usable meat on the alligator because it was so fat.

I understand that there is an industry built around gator hunting, and they do need to control the numbers, but some people do it in more of a sporting method.

Depending on the state, there are certain methods that are used. Some states require gators that are over a certain size have to be killed if they are a nuisance, and others just give the hunter the option to take the gator and move him to a more remote location.
I have a cousin who is a sport alligator hunter, and he only uses bow and arrow.
On the other hand another guy I knew was a state licensed gator removal person, and in cases where they had to kill them, they generally hooked them and pulled them in close and shot them.
Two other animal removal guys I knew in Florida would just wade in the water and grab them. It seemed like lunacy to me.
If the animal has to be killed for some reason, I think the meat should be used whenever possible. It made me sick when we would find dead gators in Florida where someone would kill them and cut off the head for a trophy and the tail for the best meat and leave the rest of the gator to rot.

There is a reason why this is the acceptable method of hunting a gator, and that is because it IS the most effective way to go about things. Bait it, shut it's mouth, hook it so it can't get away, and deliver a kill shot. You can't hunt a gator like you can a deer for instance. You don't make a clean kill in your first shot on a gator, where is he gonna go? He's gonna split into the swamp and disappear. Would you prefer to have a bunch of gutshot gators slowly dying from poorly places shots, or surviving the pain and going on to live all gimped up? How about the gator getting away, dying anyways, and leaving the hunter with a still open tag?
