why aren't you using voip (voice over ip) at home?

skype for example.
I'm not talking about your mobile phone which has obvious mobility advantages.
I'm trying to understand why people are still using their home phone instead of voip.

I haven't had a landline in about 10 years now.

Tried all sorts of voip services. At the moment I use MagicJack and have for a few years now.

Maybe it's not an easy solution. I know you can by things like a skype phone in the UK, not sure about the US.

PAP2 with 3 DIDs at home and a client on my smartphone as well. Don't understand why anyone would continue to pay a telco for a landline.

How's that magicjack? I've debated picking one up but ATM the wife doesn't want to lose the number we have on the land line so I dunno. Waste of money for that line IMO.

<3 using Skype though

Don't have any other good choices for high speed Internet other than DSL, which requires a landline, so I am forced to keep using it.

Because not every company will accept a mobile phone on account verification for starters champ? Such as Paypal for example. They require a land line for account verification. Although they are not the only one.

Landlines can operate in power outages?

You need a fax, assuming you are actually a business and not a hobbyist. Although I suppose you could pay monthly for one of those software fax dealios if you like.

Some prefer talking on a hard line for business deals versus some static filled, fade in and out, cell phone? Nothing irritates me more than a phone cutting in and out.

Those are just a few examples I can think of off the top of my head.

Voip is not a cellphone, and has none of the issues or limitations you mentioned... champ.

We have to have the home phone to have the DSL so no choice on that. But we do use Vonage for our other phones.

In the U.S. most tv/internet providers now bundle voip with there services. The phone line runs right out of the back of the modem/router they give you. Dont think to many people actually use normal copper lines anymore. No one I know does.

He is not talking about cell. He is talking about getting the difference of getting a jack in the wall landline and getting a voip line if I am not mistaken.

My bad. Ok here's one for your sport.

Broadband is not available everywhere in the U.S.. Which would explain why 'everyone' does not have VOIP.

Better champ?

I have a home phone that I also need for my Internet, but its unplugged 99.99% of the time

If I want to make a call, I use my cell - the prices are so low that I don't know why I would need to use anything else

Nice..

We have been using voip at home and at the office for many years now.

I use a pap2na at home for a couple of lines and all Aastra ip phones at the office.....

I love it... Crystal clear, quick dialing, and we have multiple dids, multiple extentions, toll free, etc and pay around 20-30.00 per month

Vonage kicks ass. We also have an AT&T M-Cell router so when I'm at home my cell calls go through that voip and I don't get charged air time.

By "Killer internet connection" is meant 1Mbps pipe? Using czech VOIP (Voipex) service on standard wifi internet connection and quality of sound is perfect without interruptions.

This is can happen if you use the computer a lot (which most likely you are doing) and not managing the traffic. Best bet is to get a small little router that can do traffic management. Where you can split up voice from your data traffic. This way you can put a certain amount for voice to provide quality of service for the VOIP, and avoid having traffic collision with your data traffic.

For less than $20 bucks a year it does the job. I think we got a 5 years for $69 deal after being a customer for 1 year. You might even be able to add that on right from the get go, if you want it.

We've got it rigged to send faxes reliably too.

I have a plan with enough minutes that I do not need any other line.

Now I have too many minutes since just about every carrier lets you add 5 to 10 numbers for unlimited calling.

If you analyze your phone bill I'd bet more than 50% of calls are to the same 5 or 10 numbers. In my case it's probably closer to 80%.

Because telephones are historically the first public utility that is restored. Before electricity, and well before cable tv.

This makes no sense. I used Vonage for years and my business line is now Comcast VOIP. Never had the first problem out of either.

Packet8 is the best. Im in Asia and maintain my USA phone number and packet 8 forwards to my thai cell for I think 2cents a minute. Voicemails to my email. Internet here is shitty and Ive never had a problem with Packet8. Loads of other features too.

using an Iphone etc most new cell phone will let you as a SIP client .. *VOIP*
so 1 number can follow you

Then again everyone in the USA should be on Google voice..
My current voip provider I have had zero issues with and cost $35 a month for world wide calling and a bunch of extras.

Calls are also clear for me with zero issues.. connected to my Ipad, Ipod touch, laptops and cell phone...

Hell its a hurricane outside *Barbados* and my calls were still clear...

That's a joke, right? Not everyone works on the Internet. You should see the amount of paperwork I have to attach to every check I send Blue Shield every month, especially the dental.

We get several faxes every month.

Skype FTW..... haven't had a landline in forever.

Fax is dead. Ever heard of a PDF and an email account?
And even if you're still clinging to outdated fax technology.... there are Internet fax services that are much less $$$ than an actual fax line.
