Dash Cam Video Released of Seattle Police Officer Shooting and Killing a Native American Woodcarver.

A dash cam video from the officer who shot and killed Native American woodcarver John T. Williams was released Friday, showing Williams ambling slowly across the street in a crosswalk before the officer opens fire.

Although most of the action takes place off-screen, Williams is seen walking across the street in front of the patrol car in the video, dated Aug. 30.

The patrol car starts to pul More..l forward, then stops.

Officer Ian Burke can then be seen walking after Williams and shouting, "Hey, hey, hey! Put the knife down! Put the knife down!"

The officer walks off-screen and then five shots ring out in rapid succession, killing Williams.

Birk's badge was later pulled after a Seattle Police Department Review Board and Chief John Diaz reached a preliminary finding that Williams' shooting was not justified.

A judge ruled Thursday that the clip from officer Ian Birk's car could be released to the public after prosecutors had a chance to notify witnesses not to view the tape.

The tape's release comes after a public disclosure request from the Seattle Times.

An inquest into Williams' shooting death by Officer Ian Birk has been set to begin on Jan. 10. The facts of the case will be laid out in the open through the process.

seen it awhile ago , looks like the guy was in the middle of carving. probably didn't even understand what was going on. cop seemed trigger happy , although the actual shooting takes place out of camera so its hard to say but from the reaction of the bystander , seemed totally unjustified. You dont "shoot to kill" because a guy doesnt drop a knife in 3 seconds if he isnt doing anything. What if he were simply a deaf chef from a nearby restaurant. Who knows, but its pretty sad when cops tell us whats justified instead of the other way around. Cops work for us and should be protecting and serving us how we want them to do it , not how they want to do it. in the 6 minute video the officer admits the guy was just carving the board you see under his arm in the first frame of the youtube video. The guy was simply walking by carving a board. fucking sick , he should be charged with murder.

Deadly force should only be used by equal deadly force. Some cops are scared out of their mind, and this is why this kind of shit happens. The situation went from "hey put the knife down" to bang bang in about 2 seconds.

So apparently the guy had a history of being a pain in the ass, but you can't just shoot the guy for not being compliant. This cop should be in prison.

to call 911. It was 2:28 a.m.
"I just wanted someone to talk
him down," said Orene. "I wasn't hysterical, Gregg was in his
room. I was afraid he was going to hurt himself. He needed
someone to talk to him."
The dispatcher asked if there was a
disturbance. Orene said "nothing was going on, nothing was
happening."
Five minutes and 27 seconds later, Lawrence police
officer Ted Bordman radioed that he was at the Sevier house.
One minute and 36 seconds later, Officer James Phillips arrived.
A few minutes later, 22 year old Gregg Sevier was dead with two
bullet wounds to the heart.

Ruled justifiable

The circumstances behind the killing of Gregg Sevier are, like
the deaths of three other members of Lawrence's Indian community
in the past two years, shrouded in controversy. Despite an
investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, only
theories surround the mysterious deaths of Christopher Bread,
Cecil Dawes Jr. and John Sandoval. The facts in those deaths
are yet to be uncovered.

After the Sevier shooting Officers Bordman and Phillips were placed on administrative leave, with pay, pending the outcome of a coroner's inquest. That inquest was held on April 30 and May 1. Six jurors heard testimony to determine whether the death was an accident, of felonious intent, or a justifiable homicide. The jury ruled the shooting
justifiable but included this notation with the verdict: "We, the jury, have concerns about how the events were handled from the time the police arrived until the final confrontation
between Gregg Sevier and the officers."

I am personally accuainted with both police officers involved as well as the Sevier family.
