I need a server to backup some files. About 1 - 1.5TB. I don't need anything fancy, but RAID5 for redundancy. Bandwidth is only needed for the transfer of the 1TB data and then pretty much 5mbps/mo would do the trick for the rsync.

Spam away. I'd be happy to pay 6 months in advance and then every 6 months for a better deal.

You mean 4.5TB?

Wow, 15 euros a month for a lowly Celeron D... obviously not new hardware, but still, amazing that such a low price could still cover rack space (that 1RU spot could house a much more expensive server), electricity (older CPUs tend to be less efficient at idle), cooling (ditto efficiency), bandwidth, etc.

Might set up a 10Mbps tor relay/exit server on one, if a dusty old fan seizes up and kills the box then it's no big deal.

Adult is perfectly fine so long as it's legal in Europe. Yes I use ovh and fully recommend them. However the kimsufi range uses "SLA Standard" bandwidth whereas my servers are on business premium. No idea what the diff is but my bw is the best (I've never seen better anyway)

You get 4 ips with the server. Additional ones are sold in blocks (no monthly cost) and it's all automated in their manager. I have 95 ips and my justifications are vague to say the least.

They don't care about space as they just build a new DC when it's full. They just opened up their 4th DC a few months ago... 3 of which are owned and built by them on their land - impressive growth for 11yrs activity

I've looked around for coupons to lose the setup fee, i've found offers for the ovh (france) but not the uk one, i don't suppose you know of any promo codes to lose the setup fee?

my current servers don't have raid, so its all new to me. i'm not too worried about the speed so i was going to use raid 1 incase a drive dies on me (i will backup also). is software raid ok for this purpose and if it is, would it be all setup on the server for me?

SA75953-OVH is my nichandle - they don't have an affiliate programme, but it may give me points. You accumulate points each month, redeemable on your invoices, 1 point == 1c or (1p prob for you). I think I get like 650 points each month with my services, so it may add more if you sign up with my nic as referral.

They sent out a detailed forum post recently explaining the setup fee and explaining a new way to remove it. basically they want to scare off the non-serious people who just take a server for 2 months to mass spam, and reward loyalty with free setup if you've had your server with them for a year (maybe 2 can't remember) to allow people to upgrade their machines with age with no setup.

Yes, I have no probs with my sware raid 1 setup. You select how you want it configured (os etc) and it will all get delivered with a root pass ready to go. One thing I would do is if there is a section to add notes, ask for / to be partitioned at 50GB - they give a stupid default partition scheme of
/ 10 GB
/home (the rest)

which is dumb cos /var fills 10GB easily with logs and db etc. If nowhere to add notes, drop them a customer support ticket before they deliver...

Finally, when you get it, in the manager switch to netboot 64bit 1000MHz kernel - the load drop is amazing with this kernel...

Thanks borked will do. i figured with that spec and storage i can consolidate 2 of my current servers onto just one of those. the move of 100's of sites and changing nameserver ip's etc will take a bit of planning so i won't be getting one for a few weeks.

i see that i can lose the setup fee by signing up for a year but i didn't want to do that and then find i wasn't happy with them.

Moving sites isn't a problem - rsync handles that easily. The problem lies in server configs esp PHP - make sure you note of all the added on php modules (phpinfo to see them if you don't have a /etc/php.d/ directory) and add them to your new server. That way nothing will break.

Then test your site by using your desktop's hosts file - add your new server sites' IPs there so you can see your new sites on your new server and test them without changing DNS.

Then when all looks good, go through the pain of changing all your different domain DNS settings! That's the real pain of everything!

Something I just noticed that I think is quite unique amongst the hosting world - just received my invoice for feb hosting and they billed for 28 days - not the announced "1 month price". I was wondering why my invoices always changed slightly month to month - now I realise it's because the price is determined per day and billed based on the number of days in the month. Makes only a small diff to the price, but nevertheless a good model to use... I'm all for paying 10% less for feb than I did in jan, because well, there were 3 days less hosting!

yeah i've got a fairly straight forward setup with just a few php modules. the servers themselves i update with yum and directadmin so configs with be pretty much the same on both servers. i think i can probably use directadmin to do the transfer, although i've never tried it before. thanks for the tip regarding the hosts file.

Nope I'm saying that they have clearly condemned those to a loss knowing that the large majority of clients that use them have other "more expensive" units to cover the costs.

Looking at their pricing compared to other hosts, and to their success compared to other hosts, I'd say they're business model is rack em, stack, pack em, build another DC, lather, rinse, repeat. And at some point a profit is made.

They launched a Magazine last year (yearly mag) and I read over it (all in French) and the owner, Octave, laid out his thinking for his business which was to provide the internet to the people of France, and slowly span out to all European companies in such transparency that the client could feel part of the infrastructure.

I've been with them just a few months and I can tell you what they provide is light years ahead of any other host I've seen. Any and every tool a sysadmin could want is at your fingertips. And that's not just limited to servers...

I've been on their xDSL mailing list for a month as I'm going to migrate my home internet over to them, and the people on that list and what they do blows me away - mainly small IT businesses that build internet/telephony infrastructures for other companies based around OVH's xDSL offering, where they group say 4 different office locations to a single point of access (ie one large private lan) that connects directly to eg the RBX3 DC and off onto the internet, a single phone # that can be handled by automation to redirect to the different extensions in those 4 diff locations, stuff like that - creation of real infrastructure networks that can only be done if you have routing access/control of a large ISP.

I'll be getting their ADSL offering shortly once they've ungrouped my NRA in a few weeks (cutting my internet/telephone monthly bill in half). Then I'll migrate over to their SDSL offering when that's ungrouped ~April/May time. ?25/5mbs synchronous with direct 1-hop routing (3ms ping) to their DC will do me just fine. When the closest competitor is offering ?100/1mbs SDSL, that is damn aggressive pricing. Just for shits and giggles I can then have one of my OVH servers play firewall and DHCP server for my home internet LAN [/geek]

OVH is a lot lot more than just "web hosting" and the openness and bare bones offering is exactly what I want. It's not for everyone though, especially those that like the comfort of fully managed so they can submit tickets asking to add another domain

I know I've pissed a few people off on this board (incl. one host I know of) with going on about them, but hey just spreading the word because I know there are lots of people here that could benefit (and save a butload of ?s) by moving over to them, and so long as I continue to make most of my cash by administrating servers, I'll continue to do so
