VideoSecrets Scam for Whitelabel Sites - terrible trick

I was picking my brains on why one of my adult site who uses the VideoSecrets.com white label solution was not having a increase in rank.
If you have a white Label with VideoSecrets.com views your source code and look for
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.flirt4free.com/" /> this tells Google your preferred domain is video secrets own domain flirt4free.com passing 0 rank to your white label and all the links you ever created to pass the link juice to flirt4free.com video secrets own domain + sometimes the canonical tag will tell Google there is no point indexing your own site and index the url within the canonical tag..

This needs the boss of Video Secrets to formally apologise to all their affiliates.
What a terrible trick how can we trust them now

Matt

He is just winding you up Matt..many use the excuse " it must have been done by a rogue employee " when something like this happens.

Thanks for the info ,

Send them an invoice for the link juice. And if you haven't yet, remove links to the whitelabel as it's doing more for them then you.

A shit load of paysites/sponsors do this with their paysites as well.

Steal and manipulate your link juice/traffic, and ensure any type-ins or random search traffic goes straight to the paysite WITHOUT any affiliate code tagged on.

Remove their links, never look back.

If you continue to do business with people who scam you, then there is no one to blame but yourself when you come up empty handed.

greg and chuck are way too stupid to think up that, esp chuck, he's border line tarded.

My guess, someone suggested it at a meeting and they ok'd it. that is if they even bothered to come into that office that day.... when you usurp a company you didn't bother to put any time into then claim you thought up the whole sha-bang it leaves you free time to count your money.

With most whitelabels you can request changes... just ask to have that removed.

And it probably wasn't put in on purpose, I'm sure some template designer added in and had/has no idea what it means. I've purchased/worked with designs of many in our Industry, and that is rather common to be slipped into every page. And I can promise you, most programs have no idea what it means.

From my experience, VideoSecrets is a top notch company. Just send them an email and ask for modifications. I can see that as not being a fair move, but if it can be fixed, why ditch the company? They have a solid product.

Sounds like you need to use better whitelabels. A wl can be a unique site, niched up, title/text, ip, ect all clean - no reason why a site like that wouldn't rank as well as anything else if you're doing proper backlink building for it.

I wouldn't deal with them because they're a bunch of cocksuckers, period.

Any company that lets a studio that represents them post a model's personal information on Craigslist and does nothing about it when informed are shitheads not worth promoting.

Wow this is really interesting...

Try doing a google search for

link rel="canonical"

I had never heard of this before...

Are you sure though that it bumps up ranking of the preferred domain by diminishing your own? I only just started reading about this topic but haven't found references to this yet. And if so wouldn't this hurt Google's ability to deliver high ranking search results based on a marketer's smart and savvy (but still google-propper) efforts?

If you fast forward the video to 12:18, the commentator says that they prevent abuse by not allowing this tag to be used across different domains. However there is a pop-up on the video that says the rules for this tag have been changed to allow it to be used across domains.

Here is that link:

Handling legitimate cross-domain content duplication
Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 2:47 PM
Webmaster level: Intermediate

We've recently discussed several ways of handling duplicate content on a single website; today we'll look at ways of handling similar duplication across different websites, across different domains. For some sites, there are legitimate reasons to duplicate content across different websites — for instance, to migrate to a new domain name using a web server that cannot create server-side redirects. To help with issues that arise on such sites, we're announcing our support of the cross-domain rel="canonical" link element.

Ways of handling cross-domain content duplication:

Choose your preferred domain
When confronted with duplicate content, search engines will generally take one version and filter the others out. This can also happen when multiple domain names are involved, so while search engines are generally pretty good at choosing something reasonable, many webmasters prefer to make that decision themselves.
Reduce in-site duplication

Before starting on cross-site duplicate content questions, make sure to handle duplication within your site first.
Enable crawling and use 301 (permanent) redirects where possible
Where possible, the most important step is often to use appropriate 301 redirects. These redirects send visitors and search engine crawlers to your preferred domain and make it very clear which URL should be indexed. This is generally the preferred method as it gives clear guidance to everyone who accesses the content. Keep in mind that in order for search engine crawlers to discover these redirects, none of the URLs in the redirect chain can be disallowed via a robots.txt file. Don't forget to handle your www / non-www preference with appropriate redirects and in Webmaster Tools.

Use the cross-domain rel="canonical" link element
There are situations where it's not easily possible to set up redirects. This could be the case when you need to move your website from a server that does not feature server-side redirects. In a situation like this, you can use the rel="canonical" link element across domains to specify the exact URL of whichever domain is preferred for indexing. While the rel="canonical" link element is seen as a hint and not an absolute directive, we do try to follow it where possible.
Even though we're tiny and look at Video Secrets as masters of their domain, I'm pretty sure that this tag isn't used to bump up their ranking and diminish their affiliates ranking. I'm still reading and learning about this tag and still have found nothing to do with ranking. I could be wrong but chances are it's just used to manage duplicate content and nothing else.
