I suspect there's going to be some people that are crushed by this and maybe even commit suicide... How much money do you think will be locked up with this that people won't be able to get back?

"Players are really loyal in this industry," Ifrah said. "You really
have to ask yourself what is the incentive a player is going to have
to leave a trusted site with global competition to play in a site
that's untested and kind of unknown and doesn't offer you the same

Definitely clearing out the competition

Dont worry they will be..

Not long ago it was posted that the Senator or who ever got the law to make it illegal is also the biggest holder of gambling domains and plans to open then. So that law wont last long.. He just took out the competition and as soon as the money is taken it will change.

Then last April, Tzvetkoff was arrested in Las Vegas and charged with the same crimes those sites founders were charged with today: money laundering, bank fraud, wire fraud. As an Australian citizen with a lot of wealth, he was considered a flight risk and denied bail.

Then after a "secret" meeting with prosecutors, he was suddenly out on bail. And now, his former colleagues are the ones facing serious jail time.

And as the Courier Mail put it, if this were still the old days, he'd buried in the Las Vegas desert right now.

Because that makes way too much financial sense to do something like that.

Instead of proper onling gaming reform, Bush signed it into law the Safe Port Act with the Unlawful Internet Gaming and Enforcement Act on the back of it. The UIGEA had no business being on that bill, but they snuck it on their before anybody could appeal because they knew Bush would sign it without question.

Most gambling sites pulled out and stopped new US players from signing up. Poker sites stayed and tried to fight that poker wasn't gambling. It didn't go over well the past few years, so all poker sites used .NET address as a free gateway into their paid .COM product.

The UIGEA went into full effect last June, and now with COICA and ICE, the US can effectively stamp a guilty verdict and break 1st Ammendment rights and take yo shit by taking the domain. I don't even know if that is actually legal for them to do in this instance.
The main problem with the UIGEA is that it excludes fantasy sports, doesn't mention state lotteries and does not clarify if horse racing wagering is illegal, which fall under the Federal Wire Act. I can't remember the needledicks name that pushed hard on this bill and snuck it on the Safe port act.

The US fucked themselves out on billions of tax revenues they could have been earning to fund their wars if they would have just imposed a Gaming tax like the UK did.

I think the government has a case here unfortunately. Even the larger poker sites would do things like charge strange increments ($50.37, $49.65 etc) instead of the $50 you deposited, to avoid being flagged by banks as a gambling site. Also they would use thousands of shell companies with non-descript names to appear on credit card statements. The biggest problem surely is that the US made laws against online gambling, and these sites did everything they could to keep letting players play and deposit. Surely they knew something was going to give eventually, and rolled the dice with it, not wanting to lose all that US revenue.. Likely they were hoping the laws would change before something like this actually happened.

This really sucks, I know a lot of people who work in the poker industry in las vegas, and FT and PS are always big sponsors as well as often being main clients producing many of the shows.. I hope this doesn't affect their ability to keep the TV money flowing.

In an acronym? UIGEA

The U.S. government even asserts "extraterritorial jurisdiction" with respect to UIGEA, and has arrested foreign nationals under UIGEA, people who operate gambling sites hosted in other countries, but who have accepted wagers from U.S. customers, when such were people unfortunate enough to find themselves on U.S. soil, or in a country that was willing to detain and extradite them to the U.S. Gary Kaplan and David Carruthers of BetonSports are a couple of examples.

A friend of mine who plays online at Full Tilt just called and wondered if he will be able to get the money he has in his account back. It is a good question. My buddy said he only has around $150 in his account, but there has to be players out there with thousands and thousands in their accounts.

They may have just got Mallicked.

The very day the owners of NETeller were nabbed while catching their connecting flights was the day every gaming site closed their doors to new US players. Everyone ensured they used non-US based Intermediary banks so the funds wouldn't get nabbed, etc etc.

Fuck that was a hellacious week. Had to update all the banks and processors. Shit some great processors even died because of that, Surefire/firecah, NETeller, and Citadel to an extent. While they may still be around, they're nothing like they were before the UIGEA for quite a while.

They probably have everything offshore, I doubt they would keep more than 1-2 days worth of transactions in USA

Yes, pretty sure there was a thread here about him and his arrest when it occurred.

I'm playing here right now (PokerStars, from Canada)

so if you want to send all your PokerStars real money balances to me, I am sure that I will send you a money order real quick.....

Can't you just see a million of these scams popping up today?

(No, I really don't want to do this - just thought I'd feed the scammers some fresh ideas)

Not entirely. Multinational US corps do it because the mandatory 35% tax they have to pay on any income generated outside the US. The current US tax law allows them to defer tax until it is delcared/moved into the US. Obama has chosen to just tax the individuals paychecks who create the jobs in the US instead of fixing the tax law and create a fair rate that would not only entice more US investment, but foreign investment as well. The US is so far behind on other countries on this its not even funny.

For online gaming sites, since they're completely on the internet, they did not have to register as a corp in the US. Instead they setup in countries that are tax havens. And instead of following the UK and taxing online gaming transactions and make billiions of dollars in tax money, the US decided to ban online gambling because Jesus doesn't like it.
