I forgot to renew a domain and someone else already snatched it up. Does anyone know how long the grace period is with Domain Name Systems if you forget to renew a domain?

about 40 days in grace period, then 30 days of redemption period (owner can still reactivate for additional fee), and then 5 days in pendingDelete status.

I think that's Directnic...they have a grace period. I don't think DomainNameSystems does I am don't think my domain has expired over 30 days yet and when I check whois it's a different owner. I think it's been 2 weeks the most.

When I log in the admin my domain is gone. There is no option to renew at an extra fee (which I would be glad to do)

I thought your registrar usually gives you some time as a last chance, then it falls into redemption for 3 months as well.

I believe grace period is different for each registrar..

If domain is worth the headache, I would try to contact their support and ask what happend

They do not really have a grace period. I've lost names there after a few days, I've also had names expire for close to two weeks and been able to rereg them.

It seems to depend on wether or not one of their shadowy aggregator drop buyers wants the name.

if one of their aggregators grabbed your name, you are fucked.

if you don't have names you don't want to lose on autorenew, especially with domain name systems, you can't complain when you lose them.

well, i can tell by looking at the page the aggregator throws up on your dropped name. aggers tend to have distinctive pages.

"shadowy agggregator" isn't a service, it's a group of domain drop speculators that buy up domain drops and throw up a harvestor page on them to try to extract a small profit off the traffic left on the name.

"shadowy" because people have speculated without proof that they are somehow connected to cheapies and gord. they don't have to be tho, aggregators will buy drops wherever they can get them at a price that makes it likely they will see a profit.

there was a day when domainnamesystems was considered a decent registrar. now it's a pit.

There was a recent post by $5submissions linking to an article about expired domains that whilst old still appears relevant.

A couple of months ago, I was getting daily emails saying the owner of liveasiangirlcam.com (singular of my domain) was for sale and inviting me to make offers. I checked the whois and it had expired 2 months before, and was "pending delete". as I didn't respond to any of these emails, they then sent me a last email saying that I could enter the final bidding for just $100.

I didn't. Instead, I waited until the day specified in the article (from memory I think it was about 80 days or something?) and then I went to another registrar and got it for $9.

I didn't really need that domain, but I didn't really want it appearing on a dropped domain list and somebody else doing something with it so I could be patient, but if the domain in question is important to you, don't risk doing what I did.

Domainnamesystems is known for doing this. If you don't renew your domain it's gone. Sometimes after just a few days. There are many many horror stories about them on this board.

Most registrars send reminders about renewals months in advance, then the last weeks every week, then every day. There is no way to miss it. But domainnamesystesms doesn't send any reminders at all. If you run out of funds in your account they only send 1 failed to renew email. If you happen to be travelling or something and find it a few days later, your domain is already gone ...

not to me, not for about 3 years. I asked them to start sending them again, they said they couldn't. For a while Lisa was mailing me personally when I had drops coming up, but I haven't heard from her in months.

all I get now is that first day of the month "domains expiring this month" letter.

I used to have 340 names there.

I was replying to another poster's statement, which I interpreted as being about the types of notices sent before and after a specific name is expiring.

like we all get from places like godaddy and moniker.

like we used to get from cheapies. used to get a 30 day notice, a 5 day notice, a 1 day notice, and an expired notice.

I don't receive any of those notices anymore.

but, if we ignore that my comment was about expiring notices for specific names, yes you are right, i did say "any", and domainnamesystems does still send that first of the month email with a list of names expiring that month.

Even though this company doesn't sound particularly ethical, you have to accept that it is your own responsibility to know when domain names expire.

I have around 80 or so over 3 accounts at 2 registrars. I maintain a central log in excel but also, every month, I login to each account and check what will expire next month and renew the ones I don't want to lose.

You rent domain names rather than "own" them and you lose access to things that you rent when you don't renew them. Any decent domain will have no shortage of people waiting to take it over.

but the registrar told me it was not deleted until 5/22?

The problem is that domainnamesystems renews from funds in your account. If you have like 50 domains renewing, but it turns out you don't have enough funds for all 50, the others will just expire. If you happen to be traveling or something at that time, you lose the domains. They should give you like a few notices and reminders and give you at least 30 days to renew it.

Sorry mate, but even though I think they are being mercenary, your point is weak.

If you know you're travelling, do it the day before or the week before or the month even.

When you renew a domain that has months or years left, it won't just add a year from the day you renew it, will add a year to the actual renewal date. You are playing with fire to leave it to the last minute or to rely on somebody reminding you.
