Gambling with an exciting moment vs a lifetime is such a shame.

Someone "could" lose is why it is exciting, I suppose. Daredevils never think it will be them.

Being over 30 he should have learned to respect the odds.

Drunkenness aside, what I find mildly unsettling is that so many people think driving 130mph is somehow unsafe. There's a lot of conditions involved... road quality... width of road... traffic... day or night... visibility... time of day... if it's night, was the road lit? Are pedestrians present?

Then there's vehicle type. Yes, absolutely driving 130mph in a Honda Civic is unsafe. And that's probably most people's point of reference... leading them to believe that ANY vehicle is unsafe at 130mph.

Not to mention the other factors nobody seems to take into account; tire width, tire profile, tire tread, suspension (IRS versus solid axle?), weight of the vehicle, front / rear weight ratio.

What people fail to realize is that in good conditions, driving 130mph in a Porsche GT3 can be perfectly safe and perfectly reasonable. Only if you're driving outside of what's safe for the conditions does it become something that shouldn't be done.

The public doesn't seem to understand anything besides "the law is the law, and the speed limit is the speed limit" etc.

Everyguy over 35 has had a close call in a car. I post this only so the guys 18-24 (or so) realize your close call may be coming. Respect proper driving rules and you will get by.

As a pizza delivery guy, I knew, if I didnt look left EVERY time (stopped at intersections before starting out) I could have probs. One day, (actually prob more than one day) it did indeed save me. I did not dart altho somehow I wanted to.. I mentally wanted to.. and a fucken semi flew by.

Sometimes in weird situations parked cars may block vision or the perfect "wrong situation" you just happen to be in.

The keyword is being "deliberate" in all moves. Do everthing slow and easy and you will come home. Never hurry, never speed, never get impatient, never dart, never make sudden moves.

I speak from experience. I successfully delivered 30,000+ pizzas in city traffic. I also used to drag race on the street as a teen all the time. We all have some daredevil in us. As a teen your odds are good. At 34 they are not.

You can fuck around in cars but the longer you go the more your day approaches. Respect them now so you make it through that day.

Deliberate.

The fault here wasn't the car or the speed. It was driver error, period. The same thing happens with the wealthy and airplanes. Just because you can buy it doesn't mean you can drive/fly it.

I dont know about the desert but in the northern US 130+ is never safe for one reason..

Deer.

Hit one at that speed will f you up. And on every public road north of The Mason Dixon line, you can come up on one or more at anytime.

It will dart out and you wont have a prayer no matter how good a driver you are.

Hitting one in a Porsche at 70 and you may be OK. At 130 almost double the force. Like hitting two deer.

Force = Mass x Accelleration if I remember right. Both are equal factors.

I've had two very close incidents driving a car that I can think of right now.

First one was all my fault. I was driving normal highway speeds and looked down to change the radio. Looked up and the car in front of me was 100% stopped. I didn't have any time, I just instantly whipped the wheel to the right and back left again without seeing who was beside me, and there was just enough space, with an 18 wheeler right on my ass in the next lane honking at me.

The second time I was on a two lane curved overpass probably 50+ feet in the air. For whatever reason the right lane was jammed with slower moving traffic and the left lane was wide open. I was doing maybe 80km/h around the curve, blazing past the people in the other lane. Then some old lady driver just slowly changes lanes in front of me without looking or signalling. The speed difference was enough that I couldn't stop in time, so I honked and flashed my lights, but it was too late.. I threw my car right then left hard, and was now sliding sideways on the road, staring at the wall in front of me.. Then my car started a massive fishtail.. I gained control and was able to drive away without hitting anything at all. I was mad enough that I didn't stop, I just drove away. I looked in my rear view and everyone had stopped their car. Truly amazing I didn't hit the wall or someone else.

no public road is safe to drive 130mph. You don't have time to react at 130mph to things that take place on public roads..

If a deer jumps out in front of you at 130mph there is a concrete divider on the right and a minivan coming the opposite direction , you are going to hit the minivan.

But even if you were going 10mph public roads are not safe because you are only capable of controlling 50% of the equation

Public roads are inherently unsafe because the public is on them.

Two stories I must tell. When I was 16 my neighbor had a beer party. This is the 70's in a "northern town". I wasnt that good of friends at this particular time and was out with other friends, came home and went to bed at 1:30 am.

BAM! 2 am I am jolted out of bed by a sound 20 ft from my head. A kid next door at the party was out hot rodding came down our street and somehow went out of control and into our 24" tree at estimated 80 mph.

Dead stop, car rolls around backwards from impact, makes a half circle going backword and hits are front house steps now 10 ft from my head.

I run downstairs, my mom calls the cops who are there in 30 seconds. Kid is killed instantly.

---

Around the same time, I was out driving with buddies, that is all we did in the 70s and someone says "there was just a bad accident on the old highway"

We head out there and are first on the scene before the cops or anyone. We go up to the car and an older guy (older to us then, a guy about 25) who I slightly knew is sitting dead behind the wheel.

Head on. Other guy is in the ditch. Cops arrive before we get to the second car.
I will never forget seeing that and it left an impression. He did not have a seat belt on.

Remember the gore videos they would make you watch as a teen of car accidents. (they still do that in school? 10th grade or so) Well this was my version for you.

---

Upshot: 7 years later at my 5th high school reunion at 12:30 am, the kid who died's younger brother shows up drunk at the festivities and wants to beat me up cause "it was our tree". I kid you not. A big friend of mine escortd me out at closing.

The numbnuts later went on to be Chief of Police in that town. I kid you not.

My dad's a cop.. One time he was first responder to a car accident. Guys car was in the ditch, but he was nowhere to be found. So he went looking for him, and found him walking up the road a ways. He said hey buddy, and the guy turned around and had a conversation with him. My dad said he had to stay really calm - because the guy was in shock, and his eyeball was dangling on his cheek.

I agree with this statement. It's all too common that grandma is well past her prime behind the wheel and is well beyond needing her driving privileges revoked, foreign drivers that shouldn't be on the road, or soccer mom drives with their heads up their ass while sipping a Slurpee and swatting at their unbuckled kids in the back of their Suburban or Excursion. So many people don't look to check for vehicles approaching intersections prior to turning right, and a lot of those people don't look prior to changing lanes.

But all of these things aside, a Porsche GT3 driving alone on a smooth, wide, well lit thoroughfare at 130mph isn't unsafe at all. What I find disheartening is that so many people treat the speed limit as if their car will burst into flames by exceeding it. The "Speed Kills" campaign comes to mind. Speed doesn't kill... impacts kill. Driving 130mph in the rain kills. Driving 130mph in a car that can't safely exceed 70mph kills. Driving 130mph down a gravel road at night through the forest kills. Don't drive like a moron and you can drive safely at speeds vastly exceeding the speed limit.

I guess the root of the problem is the lack of enforcement when it comes to laws like lane courtesy. The problem also revolves around the fact that there's virtually zero qualifications to get your license. I think people should be required to pass a strict regiment of high-speed training courses, being required to intimately understand the capabilities of not only their vehicles but other vehicles with performance vastly exceeding their own. If there was a massive campaign similar to "Speed Kills" or "This is your brain on drugs..." titled Move Right then I can almost guarantee a lot of high speed accidents wouldn't happen and our well-engineered freeway infrastructure would then be allowed to move with the high-degree of efficiency it was designed for. But instead our highway patrol officers would rather ignore those laws, and instead focus on their own personal enforcement agenda... leaving us with a traffic snarled cluster fuck of a freeway system.

Man. I'm sure your dad seen some weird things. Being first responder to a traffic accident is pretty wild stuff.

It was weird cause the guy was a pretty hefty dude and really only looked like he was sleeping and still centered behind the wheel sitting up. But you could tell he was dead. Very freaky.

Actually I cant remember for sure if his eyes were open or not. I think they were open actually which is why it was so weird. I mentally blocked it out. This was 35 years ago.

lol man ok I'll one up ya.

When I was 16 again had a 73 Chev Impala and long story short was drinking and going too fast on a gravel road got sideways and rolled it my ways (i was driving) rolled it onto the roof. Worse part the guy riding shotgun was about 260 and fell right on me.

So the bodies rolling around are the worst part. One other guy in back I think. Might have been two. Someone says, "roll a window down it could blow" so someone got a window down and we all crawled out unharmed except the big guy fell on my hand somehow.

We now have our car on the roof.

I dont remember how we got it back over but it did NOT involve the cops thankfully.

Not that time anyhow.

And the reason was fuel economy, not safety. Look it up. The fuel economy on the 335i DFI BMW goes up to 30+ mpg when exceeding 90mph. Goes down to 22 mpg when traveling 65 mph. Look that up, too.

And when I need to get somewhere that fast, I do get on a fucking plane.

When you didn't have the 911 shit planes were was faster, but you can beat a plane from Chicago to quiet a few major cities. The time you have to get to the aiport ahead of time, the plane flight time, the landing time, security etc. Flying alot of the time is actually slower.

He crashed at over 100mph, hard to say though whether he died on impact on burned to death. They say, he was identified by the tattoos on his body. His face and head pretty much burned to coal.

I can remember being in australia and being shown pics of crashes caused by animals. Some of the worst however were caused by spiders. 80mph, flick the sunvisor down, and a bleeding huge huntsman drops into your lap and over they go.

My life is pretty much dictated by cars and getting the most out of them possible. However 130mph is not a safe speed and if you are not able to understand why then you are one dense motherfucker.

Public roads are inherently unsafe because the public is on them.

I am german, i have a Porsche and Germany has partly no speed limits. When traffic allows it, i drive 150 mph. It's perfectly legal and i have done it the last 10 years that i have that car without any accident. If someone wanted to change the speed limit in Germany to 55 mph there would be a public revolution.

is it unsafe? judge yourself - the number of deaths in traffic per 1 million people in Germany in 2010 was 45 and in the US 105 (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verkehrstod)

the difference probably is: here people are used to it and take more care when changing lanes for example. i have seen some really bad and careless behaviour on US highways - including all those retards that seem to think having a phone conversation or texting is something you should do in traffic.

when we have the same discussions on GFY about guns it's always "it's not the gun, it's the people who kill". it's the same with cars and driving fast.

the speed limit is a direct reflection of the road conditions AHEAD.

The autoban was made with long sweepihng curves made for high speeds.

Roads in the USA were not made that way and should not be driven the same.

The speed limit on most interstates is 70 MHP and that's not for fuel economy. Once again ZERO reason to go 130 MHP. Especially when you're fucking drunk. I can't fathom how you are defneding the asshole.

That is so sad. They were "Jackasses" on the show, but they should of just kept it to their on camera stunts. Now, 2 more people have lost their life due to reckless acts of drinking and driving.

sounds like the stats are showing it is not safe in either country , it's just more unsafe to drive in the usa

It's only a rear cage in the GT3 if fitted not a full one. Would help in a roll but that's about all.

yeah, much more congestion in Germany probably (if you don't count LA and New York)

and actually accidents with dead people rarely happen in traffic jams, hard to kill someone at 5 mph

it shows that 55 mph limits not automatically make it more safe to drive - and that no limits automatically kill more people

in total numbers it's btw 10 times more dead people in the US at 2.5 times the population

I'm wondering what they did a toxicology report on. Did they find liver particles in the twisted wreck?

You're the dense mother fucker. Go back and read again what I wrote. I didn't say it was safe in any condition. It's clear you have the inability to comprehend written word.

You can't say absolutely that in any condition 130mph isn't safe. Or else everyone on the Autobahn would die. We all know that isn't the case. Look at what MDalton said earlier.

Now, stop being a proponent of everyone creeping along on the roadway because you're the douche blocking the passing lane. Move right, remove your head from your ass, and allow traffic to move smoothly and without interruption.

I'm not defending anyone, idiot. Read MaDalton's link on death's per million and I want you to come back and elaborate on your claim that 130mph is inherently more unsafe than 70mph in all conditions.

Speed limit being set is set at 70mph doesn't translate to "ZERO reason to go 130 MPH". That's not very rational logic. The reason the speed limit is set at 70mph is because it's the lowest common denominator of performance capabilities of vehicles currently on the road.

It's sort of like everyone flying around in Cessna 177's with a max airspeed of 142 mph, so you say "It's extremely unsafe to travel at mach 1". Yeah, it's unsafe for YOU to travel at mach 1, your fucking wings will rip off and your aircraft will disintegrate. It's not unsafe for the guy flying a Lockheed F22 at mach 1.

You fail to take into account that there are a lot of machines on the road that are designed to safely achieve this level of performance without any problems.

Ok it appears you actually are as stupid as I initially thought.

Naturally it is safe to drive at whatever speed you like when the conditions are *right*.

Just like it is safe to go for a swim wearing a meatsuit in shark infested waters at the *right* time.

It is safe to do *almost* anything when the conditions are *right*.

Feel like making any other general statements?

In this scenario ie drunk guy late at night driving on roads sign posted for a far lower speed = unsafe. Nothing to do with the cars ability to drive at those speeds safely. It is likely that him driving this car the reason he died - ie 'man my GT3 is so fast and can corner so well look at this....BANG.....'

However i'm just hazarding a guess there - a bit like you, when you claim to know everything about a car and the conditions of the road up ahead when you claim to be able to drive at 130mph safely on roads that are sign posted otherwise.

There are many cars on the road that are designed to go extremely quick, however you seem to fail to understand that the number of drivers who have the ability to drive at that speed safely is very very low.

Just a hot tip for you - right lane here = passing lane
