How much gasoline do you need to protect electric fuel pumps in the summer time?
I always stay above 1/4, because I know that if I run low the pump can suck shit up off of the bottom of the tank and/or overheat
A lot of people tell stories about driving around on E and burning a fuel pump up Do I need just enough to immerse the pump itself? Or is it "the more the better", where the more fuel I have, the more heat it can absorb? I don't know whether you can't drive on E because the fuel and tank act as a heatsink or because there needs to be a lot of fuel in there to absorb heat Do normal people think about these things? Do they bother you? ![]() |

That really depends how old the car is. If it's fairly new don't worry about it because most newer vehicles (especially imports) pressurize the tank by a pump forcing air into the tank to push the fuel into the hoses. That way there's less worry about sediment and burning up the pumps.
That's why some cars refuse to start if the gas cap is off or not completely tightened. |

in the summer time the main reason people keep the fuel level higher is due to evaporating gasoline. the less you have in the tank, the more can evaporate within the tank. most cars nowadays have systems that rid the tank of these extra fumes called an EVAP. Ive been around cars my entire life and the only way a fuel pump goes bad is if it was going to go bad anyway, not due to low fuel levels. Not to mention most gas tanks/fuel pump assemblies are fully immersed in fuel until you literally have no gas left.
