Thousands of dogs bound for human consumption in Vietnam stopped in Thailand (PICS)

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...e-rescued.html

They were destined to be cooked and eaten, but these suffering dogs luckily escaped their gruesome fate.

Police in Thailand rescued more than 1,000 of the animals from tiny cages when they intercepted four trucks attempting to smuggle them out of the country.

The dogs -stacked high in scores of crates - were being transported to Vietnam as officers swooped in two raids in Nathom and Si Songkhram districts near the border with Laos.

Saved: Scores of dogs crammed into tiny cages were rescued by police as they were being smuggled out of Thailand into Vietnam where they would have been sold for their meat

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...#ixzz1Uw6t40Jt

Livestock officials in Nakhon Phanom confirmed 1,011 dogs were being looked after at a government shelter.

Another 119 died from suffocation in the cramped cages or when they were thrown into the trucks as the fleeing traffickers tried to speed away.

Two Thai men and a Vietnamese man have been charged with trafficking and the illegal transportation of animals.

If convicted the accused face a maximum one-year jail sentence and a fine of up to 20,000 baht ($670)

The dogs were to be taken across the Mekong river in Laos. Prices for stray dogs and pets in rural Thai villages can reach as much as $33 an animal.

Too late to be saved: Many of these dogs died from suffocation in the tiny cages

13 COUNTRIES WHICH STILL EAT DOG MEAT

Thirteen countries around the globe still eat dog meat. They are: China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Polynesia, Switzerland, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Arctic and Antarctic

China: Although the Chinese were the first to domesticate the dog and keep them as pets, dog meat has been a source of food from at least the time of Confucius, and possibly even before.

Indonesia: Eating dog meat is usually associated with people from the Batak Toba culture, who cook a traditional dish named saksang that is like a dog-meat stew.
Meat for sale: Market traders with live ducks that will be for the pot

Meat for sale: Market traders with live ducks that will be for the pot

Mexico: Dogs were historically bred for their meat by the Aztecs. These dogs were called itzcuintlis, and were often pictured on pre-Columbian Mexican pottery.

Philippines: In the capital city of Manila, the law specifically prohibits the killing and selling of dogs for food except in certain circumstances including research and animal population control.

Polynesia: Dogs were historically eaten in Tahiti and other islands of Polynesia at the time of first European contact in 1769.

Taiwan: Dog meat in Taiwan is particularly eaten in the winter months, especially black dogs, which are believed to help retain body warmth.

Korea: Gaegogi literally means 'dog meat' in Korean. Gaegogi, however, is often mistaken as the term for Korean soup made from dog meat, bosintang. The distaste felt by dog lovers, particularly from the West, has made this dish very controversial.

Switzerland: According to a Swiss newspaper report in 1996, the Swiss rural cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen are known to have had a tradition of eating dogs, curing dog meat into jerky and sausages, as well as using the lard for medicinal purposes.

Vietnam: Dog meat is eaten throughout Vietnam. To many Northerners, it is a popular, if relatively expensive, dinnertime restaurant meal.

Arctic and Antarctic: Dogs have historically been an emergency food source for various peoples in Siberia, Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. Sled dogs are usually maintained for pulling sleds, but occasionally are eaten when no other food is available.

As much as $33 an animal? Let's say $20. Over 1000 dogs at $20 is $20,000.
So one year in jail and a $670 fine seems like a joke to me for such a profitable biz...

On the other hand meat is meat, yes. But check some videos on youtube to see how humanely these dogs are killed...

Thailand still has areas eating dog, it's just hush hush.

I also don't have a problem with people eating dog (or any animal), so long as they are put down humanely.

If this dog story bothers you, ponder how many children and women were trafficked on the same day and didn't get caught. And knowing Thailand, the ONLY reason they caught the dog traffickers is because someone didn't get greased.

A lot of Asians in the developing countries are barbarians. Dogs, cats, chickens, people... all the same to a lot of them.

Thailand is having problems now where the chicken producers are filling the chickens with embalming fluid (for dead people) to try to preserve the chicken after it's sold. It has made a lot of people very sick and they keep busting place after place doing the same thing. Then of course there are the Thai fishing companies who are using Burmese slave labor, taking them out on the boats, working them almost to death, then killing them instead of paying them. I think that made the news a couple of times and then it was business as usual.

It's sad to say, but life is not worth a whole lot in many places around the world.

I'm surprised someone hasn't stepped in to put a dog on the same level with a pig, or cow.

Dog's are exempt from "animal" status. If you think otherwise, then you've never had a canine best friend.

Denis Leary has an old bit about this that's pretty hilarious. He's talking about what animals are socially acceptable to eat and from what I remember it went something like:

"And what are you?"

"An Otter"

"And what do you do?"

"I do stupid cute little human tricks with my hands and swim around on my back."

"You're free to go."

"And what are you?"

"I'm a cow"

"Get on the fucking bus, NEXT"

Embalming fluid? Wouldn't that be too expensive? Here in the Philippines, traders would just sell chickens that died during the growout stages at a massive discount. called "double dead" meat. Big business apparently because the meat is 50 to 75 percent cheaper. People wouldn't know the difference specially if the meat is used for sausages or ground up or used in soup. Anyone know if you can suffer any long term health issues from eating double dead meat?

Eating dog is like eating a horse or a donkey... a complete waste of resources. You can argue cuteness and cruelty to pigs, cows and chickens until your blue in the face, the reality is those animals serve as one purpose and one purpose only, for eating, they wouldn't have survived on their own, and what we have bred them into they would never survive on their own so there is no argument.

Yet dogs have been domesticated by us for 1000's of years aiding us with farming in times were farm hands were non existent due to disease or war. It would take a man 9 or 10 years to wait for his son to be old enough to work on the fields or to help to keep the live stock or produce safe, with dogs it would only take a few months. If it wasn't farming they were helping us with it was hunting.

I still believe animals for eating should be treated as humanely as possible still, but putting them on par with dogs is just complete ignorance--unless it is last resort.

I agree. Anyone who inflicts cruelty on a defenseless chicken, cow or pig, should be beaten to a pulp.

I agree with the others that meat is meat, but to me at least make their journey to death as conformable as possible and dont stuff them in tight cages like that.
A dog is a dog just like a cow is a cow.
Its not the meat factor, its the cruelty factor I despise.

Yes I saw the report on fishing on the BBC a few months ago and you say its back to business? The report was shocking. The same shrimp we buy at English supermarkets.

Some of you need to watch the documentary "Earthlings".

If you think the cow or the chicken you had last night was treated as humanely as possible and had a quick painless death, you are delusional.

wow

Under Canada's Wildlife Act, it is illegal to sell meat from any wild species, but there is no law against selling and serving canine meat, including dogs, if it is killed and gutted in front of federal inspectors

i've tried dog..the meat is ok..sort of like moose meat if you have ever had it

i have also worked at a slaughter house, and let me tell you guys something you can think about as you have a steak, burger, or enjoy some bacon. The animals know they are about to die and are shitting themselves scared the moment they drive into the lot, they can smell the death and blood and shit from the other animals. They all shit themselves and bray and freak out, as they know they are about to die and they are scared shit-less literallly.
so anyway, stroll on into your grocery store and enjoy the meat, something gave its life for you to enjoy it. However, dont kid yourself into thinking you are better then someone else because you trick yourself into believing the fairy tale.

hey is your childhood dog still having fun at that farm your parents took them to?
