OH GOD! Why do sponsors ruin the site.

I hate to go to a sponsor pay site to see if I will sign up and when I try to leave
some stupid alert box opens.

I scratch the whole program off my list.

That stuff is old, annoying as all hell and can hurt our google rank if we link to it.

There's a lot of controversy about whether or not exit pop ups increase sales. A lot of copywriters seem to think they do, while others feel like they actually decrease sales.

The argument for is: The people who are leaving aren't going to be buying anything anyway, so giving them another chance to buy at a better price might convert otherwise lost sales.

The argument against is: Most customers do not buy on their first visit and hitting them with an exit pop up might deter them from visiting again at all, resulting in an overall loss of revenue in the long term.

There has been some split testing on this, but no one has been able to agree on what works.

It shouldn't affect SEO*, but it increases your chances of being dropped during a manual review (if you link to them - greatly increases if you actually have pop ups). Adwords does also not allow sites with pop ups.

*This is the general consensus. I haven't done any individual testing. I stay away from them, myself.

I came to the conclusion after not getting any SE traffic while linking to shit for
years while "trading CJ traffic". I then dumped all the shit, and forgot about the
site completely until the SE traffic on that site made it big enough to take
seriously again.

More importantly is that my surfers stop clicking on my banners because they hate
that shit.

Case closed for me.

Please feel free to do what you like.

One thing that is not debatable to me is that popups decrease your free site bookmarks
and the time they spend on your site.

So do I link to something that is not really converting so well these days and lose
my traffic? Or do I try to keep the traffic until conversions improve?

It hurts if you link to sites Google views as spammy. Make your own judgement as to whether or not the site you're linking to is quality

Ok so no concrete evidence that linking to a site with a console hurts, which is pretty much what my own testing also shows.

Consoles do not suddenly make a site 'spammy' :

This industry is largely run by idiots.

All that can be seen is the 1-2 sign ups in 1,000s off pop ups. What can't be seen is the pissed off surfers.

Any business that treats customers as badly as this business has for 12 years, can't expect to keep those customers. We relied for too long on the notion that the customers had to buy. Well today they don't.

You fucking mong. Tubes and consoles tells you all you need to know about how much a console 'pisses off' surfers.

I'll lay a million billion trillion dollars you piss more people off on the boards that still let you post your dribbling rants about what we should 'of' done 10 years ago, than the entire population of porn surfers exposed to consoles, as well as all the mainstream surfers exposed to them on big news and sports sites, put together.

Tip: Nothing, absolutely *nothing* you say or do can change the past, and to bang on as much as you do about something that has happened, and *cannot be changed* is one severe fucking waste of time and energy. Picture yourself on your death bed (fuck knows, we all have), and ask yourself if you'll really be thinking 'I wish I spent just a little more time on gfy repeating the same old shit, about which no-one could do anything anyway'.

I guess because they are interested in making the most money off the traffic they are getting, just like most affils are. If given the choice I always leave consoles on.

When affiliates demand massive payouts, where do you think the money comes from? Though I agree that's not the best method, you shouldn't be surprised that sponsors are trying to monetize every last cent they can.

You popup loving people can link to anything you like.

I don't care.

I know what finally worked for my site, I know what I don't like, I can look at my
bookmarks growing when before I had none, and I'm going to do what I want to do.

I don't use pay sites with popups. Period.

So at the very least the popup is causing the sponsor to lose my traffic; but
somehow they are not losing traffic. Hmmmmmmmmmm?

I'm not the only webmaster who doesn't link to pop ups.
