I want to ask GFY'ers how long they think one should wait for their money before bringing it to the board?

the fact is someone out there owes me some cash and doesn't seem like they are gonna pay!.

I am asking basically because I am a nice guy, I really don't wanna do it ... but I WANT MY FUCKING MONEY !

I hope the person reads this and fires up their PAYPAL..

For me, if the client doesn't pay me once the design is done... First he doesn't get the design, and then i'd throw his name everywhere for people to know he's a bad client. Have no time for that game.

Yeah .. I always do payment upfront .. but let it slide with another designer .

You are asking the age old question my friend.
Which comes first... The Chicken or the Egg?

Some clients would have you believe that paying post production is always best.

However your situation, is the exact reason that so many designers are going to full payment up front.

I would tend to agree with a client's perspective that post production payment is how it should be done... IF, it were in person, and you had direct contact with them... However, online... It's a different story.

You don't know who is on the other end of that DSL line.

The fact is that the client wants a designer, and are coming to you for service. If they don't like your terms, or want to pay afterward, it is ultimately up to you, but there are some things that you can do to protect yourself if you decide to take a post production payment option...

1. Charge More
2. When the project is complete, screenshot it, and slap a nasty "SAMPLE" graphic over the screenshot, for them to view, make them pay, and then deliver.
3. Make them pay a non-refundable deposit to preview the project, to show "Good Faith" on their part.

and I'm sure there are more ways.

A third option is to go 50/50 with them and require a deposit.

If they insist on paying afterward, and are not willing to pay anything before delivery, or want to make you wait... Just tell them to get it done somewhere else.

Most likely, if they are not willing to pay up front.... there is a reason. Someone once said that they don't pay up front, because the designers are lazy, and won't do the work in a timely manner if they already have the money.

My answer to that is... If you pay up front, and the project isn't delivered, you can get a refund within 30 days usually from the banking institution, by disputing it.

I can't think of 1 good reason for a client to insist on post production payment, unless he/she is trying to get some free work, and if that's the case... you're better off telling them to go somewhere else.

Anyhow, that's some of my views on the subject.

many of you don't know what a thread like this can do to a business. the fact is , if you go through enough shit , your fucked.... look at tennisace .. hes a great guy I talk to him often but he made some mistakes and fucked a few people and will struggle for his entire carreer for it . and if you look at some peoples credibility , did he fuck as many people as it seems ?

Nah. I think Tennis Ace would do fine, even still, if he wasn't so damn annoying. He used to message me every couple weeks, until I told him to stop. He would start with small talk, act as if we were friends, and then ask for work.

Know how annoying that is? If you already have a business relationship established, fine, acceptable. But to a complete stranger? I'd have to be crazy to want to buy some work from him...

I tell you it sucks to be on the other side of this too. You order some work and pay for it then you wait. I guess as a customer I do not mind paying upfront as long as the amounts are smaller and the person has reputation that they want to protect. Just very hard to send off the money and hope something shows up.

As for how long. Do everything to contact them and if nothing comes of it and sounds as if this is weeks old which is much longer then I would wait. Out them and hope it gets results.

Hungryman even boasted to me about doing the galeries himself. At least he assured me he did them.

He took 50% and didnt even pay you. And then claimed your work. He must have deep pockets, because he is ripping off designers and making more than they do from each job.

That job was 600 bones, he pockets 50%.

All that for lying to people to get a job then outsourcing it, bragging about doing the galleries himself, lying on the board to get the job, and then in the end fucks over the designer, yet again.

For the record as well, Local G paid me in minutes of completion. As well as 50% to start.

And no doubt Hungryman was already paid, so he spent the money on something other than paying his designer.

Aside from that, I know local g and have spoken with him many times, and as soon as he sees this, he is going to feel like shit about the whole thing. Sucks for the designer as well as Local G since he thought he was paying Hungryman, not an outsourced hidden designer getting fucked for more than 50%

I guess as a customer I do not mind paying upfront as long as the amounts are smaller and the person has reputation that they want to protect. Just very hard to send off the money and hope something shows up. As for how long. Do everything to contact them and if nothing comes of it and sounds as if this is weeks old which is much longer then I would wait. Out them and hope it gets results.

And no doubt Hungryman was already paid, so he spent the money on something other than paying his designer. Aside from that, I know local g and have spoken with him many times, and as soon as he sees this, he is going to feel like shit about the whole thing.
