damn, that is pretty impressive. guess these guys paid attention in flying school

FTC has stricter guidelines for aircraft in and out of the US. I have a friend that goes all over the world and said he is scared shitless when going into areas like South America and Africa. A lot of times they just have "patches" on the planes because they buy fucked up ones for cheap and "fix" them

my mother was in Alaska and she told me she was flying in a small turboprop that seemed like 30 years old and they had stuffed towels in the door cause water was coming in

South America? He needs to fly LAN Chile, one of the best airlines I've ever flown in.
Food is good, service is good, all modernized with the interactive monitors on every seat...top notch imo.

That's fucking amazing really. Imagine having to land a jet knowing you had no landing gear. He's got balls.

I was there in 1980 and looking at the background I am amazed at how built up it is now.

Being part of the evil empire has surely not set back their progress. I worked with many of their pilots while in the USAF at that time and clearly, their pilots have not lost anything either...great landing!

He's got balls? You think he was doing it on a dare or something?

i'm no engineer, but thinking about it that plane being a 727 could have helped since all 3 engines (and their weight) are in the back

I used to throw bags for Delta a long time ago and we would talk about stuff like this with pilots. You are actually 100% correct, but not for the reason you are thinking. It's not totally about the weight, but rather more about the fuel flow.

Without engines in the way hanging off of wings, the threat of a fire/explosion is lessened. A belly landing with a 727 or without nosegear like this one is much less of an issue than with a plane that has engines on the wings that could contact the ground, tear off, spark, expose fuel easier, etc.

right, didn't think about that

i once also read that the 727 is the only big commercial airplane that you could eventually exit with a parachute through the rear exit when flying low and slow enough. with all other planes you would smash into the rear tail unit
