The Boston Tea Party had a defined enemy and a clear goal.

The enemy here is the "1%." And no matter how many times I've asked exactly these 1% are, I have yet to receive an answer aside from "pshaw! You should already know!"

I thought the enemy was banks. Then I thought it was politicians. Then it was overbearing police. Now it's shipping companies. Next up: school principals.

Odd, I've seen others and myself explain who the 1% is, and even list people/corps, several times, even in threads I've seen you post in.... I'll clear it up, if you didn't get a bailout / the investment frauds, help it out, etc, etc, etc... you're part of the 99% - now it's impossible to be confused in the future.

They weren't protesting shipping companies... they were trying to get a general strike to take place so more people would notice the cause, which did work, 1000's of people joined them.

Btw, they didn't just protest the port, that was the end of the march, along the way they did the same thing to about a dozen banks and other major corps in the area.

It's probably best to not get your information from fox news about this....

I read about it last night and this morning on another news source before reading this Fox article. The other article said almost the exact same things this Fox article is saying, so I'm clueless what this particular Fox article has to do with anything.

I've also read your other replies about it being the opposite of the 99% after you described who the 99% are. That's not a definition, that is a broad spectrum of people.

Hey if this movement thinks they are going to accomplish actual goals by doing these protests, have at it. I am merely suggesting they pick specific actual targets, focus all energy on those targets, and tear them down. This energy could turn over Congress in 2012, but they would need to get started on it now. Primaries are soon.

yeah, from their words you can't really tell who the enemy is.
from their actions, it seems their enemy is anyone with a job.

here in philly, a handful of trash "occupied" the comcast building. far as I know, they didn't get a bailout / the investment frauds, help it out, etc, etc, etc...

It was reported that in the begging it was peaceful and orderly and then some of the protesters broke out windows and defaced some businesses on the way to the port and then upon reaching the port a fire was started.

Sly, people still don't know why the Civil War was fought. However, these people are very pissed off and doing something about it. Of course there are trouble makers out there too, always, but I say bring on the protests.

Once again you are confusing your opinion with facts. The 1% is a much larger group than the handful(.0000001%) of people that benefited from the obama stimulus and bailouts.

It's pure comedy that everyone has to continually explain what the "1%" is and even more so, when no two explanations are the same. I couldn't even begin to count the many levels of fail in this.

Odd, the articles above all say something a little different... I wonder why they all focused in on 30 people causing problems and not the other 3000? Maybe to twist the truth a little?

99% is a broad spectrum of people, the 1% is not... the 1% is very easy to define.

They've already accomplished many goals... people like 12clicks are talking about it, which means he's paying attention.. goal #1 reached. They've also gotten bankers, investment corps, etc to start talking, even big ceo's have took notice, even spoken about it.. so clearly, they are accomplishing things.

Not Fox: http://news.yahoo.com/police-occupy-...bouchon=807,ca

More or less says the same thing.

I don't have a problem with people protesting. A little chaos every now and then is good. I simply believe it to be ineffective use of energy. A few smart people could start channeling all of that energy from everyone who has no clue what they are doing and get results.

Protests in the Middle East (for a terrible example) do very little until you call NATO!

I'm sorry, I had no idea that every time we posted about th 1% we had to list every possible situation that puts a person into the 1%.

Get off your ego trip, you are part of the 99% too.

We clearly have different definitions of just about everything. That's fine. We will agree to disagree.

Why does the 1% have to be a single defined thing?

The protests of the 60's had 1000's of various messages, that slowly became one core message... with still, 1000's of messages within it.

Busted. I have an ego problem. Or I'm just too stupid to understand.

I'll have to think about which one it is. Maybe both.

I know that I am wrong for continually assuming it should be obvious that you cant affect change without having a single, clearly defined message and clearly defined objective. Otherwise, its obviously just a bunch of random assholes bitching about anything and everything at the expense of tax payers with little to no probability of it going anywhere for any of them.

Looks rather peaceful to me. I mean, I know when they set fire to shit in the street, it's always peaceful.

I don't understand this. How does a "general strike" attempting to shut down city hurt the 1%? It hurts the 99% in lost wages, and smaller businesses who have to shut down because of it. Five businesses were vandalized. Downtown Oakland seems to be shutdown this morning - wonderful - people won't be able to get to their jobs.

Protesters bring out the worst in people. With no real leadership and no barrier to entry, anyone can just show up and take part.

The general public isn't suddenly talking about the issues because of the OWS; We've been talking about these issues for years now. This has dominated the news, dominated the last election, and will dominate the next election.

Now instead of talking about the issues, we are talking about protesters burning shit, vandalizing businesses, and causing employees to miss time at work - all while costing city governments millions.

The only fucking goal they have at this point is "Look at us".

Now the real infiltration begins.
What started as simple protesting (which was working well) has turned into factions of groups with sinister motives.
The lame ass anarchists who love to break shit. That's great, good way to get the people behind you.
OWS splinter groups backed by $ who are not of the original OWS stirring up shit and pissing regular people off i.e. port blockade.

Whoever is behind these latest hijinks in Oakland is doing the job because it's derailing the movement quickly.

When you have millions of people behind you, don't turn around and slap them in the face.

If you made $340k this year you are officially in the top 1% of earners in the country.

If you made $50k this year you are in the top 10%!!

congrats to all the winners!

I dont really watch the news much anymore. Here is what I gather from the "1% protests". A bunch of people are irritated and agitated. Almost none of them can articulate what they want to happen exactly as a result of their "efforts".

In my city, this started and I watched a rather comical news piece of a reporter walking around and randomly asking protesters why they were protesting. Predictably, no one could articulate either why, what they wanted or what they expected to happen exactly as a result. Most of them stuttered, stammered and openly said that people are there for their own reasons. Well... if you're there for your own reasons, then obviously you're not going to change anything. If the entire nation was protesting for a single point i.e. enacting certain legislation on banking reform or whatever, the entire nation could easily understand, get behind it and make it happen. When there is no message... when there is no objective.... there will be no change. As it is, these idiots are costing tax payers and business money. Tons of money... and for no discernible reason.

Its pretty sad that such a large majority of a nation are buying gold grills, designer jeans, iphones, jewelry and maxing out their credit cards with useless crap... then bitching about those who don't.

For all you who don't "understand" what they are protesting about, or who is who, and blah blah blah.

Here is a REALLY good article sort of explaining a lot of it - http://www.rollingstone.com/politics...ating-20111025

^ Seriously, if you plan on making any more posts in a OWS thread in your life, please for the love of god read that article. So tired of people (in general) just blabbing away on topics they don't understand. So fucking annoying.

It is sad. It's also sad that most of the 89% sit around and do nothing but collect tax money to support themselves and even sadder that they demand the top 11% aught to give up their money too for no other reason than it's greedy not to.

what you kids fail to understand is that anyone can become rich as proven by all the people born middle class who now populate the Forbes Richest list.

there's not some secret society of rich people holding you back, its simply your lack of intelligence and ability.
many of the world's richest people started out in life with less than you.
they had the ability, you don't.

What you don't understand... is that if you have to keep explaining it, then no amount of explaining will matter. Hence the futility of their efforts.

Bullshit. Rich people spend tons. How many jobs you think a rich person creates and supports when he buys a mansion, (company full of employees to build it, housekeepers, gardeners, nannies to maintain), boat (company full of employees to build it, deckhands, captain storage & maintenance mechanics to keep it running). I know plenty of people in the 1% and they tend to spend a shitload of money and balance it out with saving some as well.

I know 2 people in the 1% that never made more than 50k in a single year.

Personally I have been in and out of the 1% myself almost 4 times in my career, and when I wasn't in it, I didn't ask anyone to give me money, I just worked harder.

Speaking in generalities like that is just ignorant, the 1% don't tend to stay in the 1% and enter in and out of it many times in a lifetime. That is what has been always so great about the USA, that this opportunity to move up and down exists and is close to impossible in other countries.

You idiots who think no one is entitled to keep the majority of the fruits of his labor are nothing short than jealous GREEDY assholes. Sure a tiny portion of the 1% inherited the money and never worked a day in their lives, they can fuck off, but that's under 0.1% of the population. Both sides of this argument are serving Kool-Aide, but the marxist message seems to have a bit more sugar in it. Drink up losers.

odd then that we see so many OWS signs being carried by actual OWS protesters that DON'T talk about big banks and the government. And the whole "warren buffet doesn't pay enough" argument is for the stupid.

All of the stuff you listed didn't really happen with the previous generation yet they were still poor or at best, middle class. They didn't have credit card, they saved money but in the end they didn't really have much more of anything to show for it.
