All we have really learned is that there are a lot of people on GFY who don't know basic math and that Frank is some kind of genius.

a lot of people here should never ever complain about ratios again. If they do, sponsors should pull this thread.

I dont remember much from school, but i remember order of operations very good, and how if you wanted to calculate differently you need to use brackets.

most of yall are some GIANT intellectual pussies.
NO ONE EVER DIED from admitting to being wrong. here, watch. I'll go first.

when i first looked at the title, i of course thought the answer was 1.
but then when someone came in and explained the actual order things go in with math, i realized the mistake i had made and now i see that the answer is 41.

see?
i was wrong.
i admitted it.
I STILL DRAW BREATH.

fuckers.

A cautionary tale for anyone that didn't say 41 ...

A friend's sister was lucky enough to win a big screen TV in a contest a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if it's just Canada, but here you have to answer a skill-testing question to win a prize, just a simple little math question anyone could answer, but it's a legal technicality that means you got the prize by using skill to earn it. The question she had to answer was something along these lines, with a "+" and a "x", and she didn't use order of operations, answered it WRONG and didn't get her prize.

So if you didn't answer 41, please brush up on your grade 6 math or you never know what you might miss out on !!!

40 + 40 x 0 + 1= an ambiguous equation

40 +(40 x 0) + 1 = 41
(40+40) x 0 + 1 = 1
40 + 40 x (0 + 1) = 80

No, it's not ambigious. That's the whole point of the order of operations rules.

We use brackets when they're needed. In this case they are not needed. How do you know brackets are done first? Because they're covered in the order of operations. This stuff is taught every day to middle school children in this century. If you don't want to believe me that's fine, but you're just being silly. There's nothing ambigious about this equation.

it's not about "fashion" or when was done what...

with or without brackets it simply makes it two different equations

I know because I have a degree in mechanical engineering. I took math classes for 9 semesters. Every freshmen gets that order of operations gag from a professor with a sense of humor. Turn in a paper with an equation written without proper brackets and you fail. There is a reason we have been using brackets for the last 400 years.

you took math classes for 9 semesters and you're wrong

40 +(40 x 0) + 1 = 41
(40+40) x 0 + 1 = 1
40 + 40 x (0 + 1) = 80

this is all cool but

40 + 40 x 0 + 1 = 41

and that's with no brackets, as written.

is there a rule that says you need to add brackets? please point me to that math rule, here is the one that says im right

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations

Quote:
For example, in mathematics and most computer languages multiplication is done before addition; in the expression 2 + 3 × 4, the answer is 14. Brackets, which have their own rules, may be used to avoid confusion, thus the preceding expression may also be rendered 2 + (3 × 4), but the brackets are not required as multiplication still has precedence without them.
looks like you learned wrong, broseph, time to admit you were wrong and learn from your mistake

No. I have a degree in computer science and a degree in math.

It's not an ambiguous equation.

There's no ambiguity there. Absolutely bloody none.

There's no gag in there, this shit is taught in middle school. You would not fail a paper if you handed in an equation with no brackets when it's as obvious as this one. In fact you'd probably get marks docked off for putting brackets into something bloody obvious as this.

Fuck's sakes.

It is not ambiguous.

If you studied 9 semesters of maths, how did you pass?

I studied Maths in Cambridge, so it's illegal for me to participate in this thread

Did you go to school? First graders know the answer... I hope you're just joking around. Otherwise it's so fucked up
That's what everyone says eventhough they all have a different answer

I know right... Still it's CRAZY
That's why I'm not even giving my answer... I'm too shocked to see this happening... I can't believe I see a group of adults arguing about this easiest task ever

I'm gonna calm myself down and believe it's all jokes

There's no ambiguity there. Absolutely bloody none.

There's no gag in there, this shit is taught in middle school. You would not fail a paper if you handed in an equation with no brackets when it's as obvious as this one. In fact you'd probably get marks docked off for putting brackets into something bloody obvious as this.

Fuck's sakes.
It's clear that there are a lot of GFY posters that are probably in middle school or just recently out of it. I graduated from college in the early 1980's. And during that era this equation was exactly what I already typed. It was a joke for freshmen engineers. If computer sciences have made that equation acceptable today I wouldn't be aware of it.

I must have been just lucky. And for the 30 years since I graduated the luck never ended. Every year my manufacturing companies continue to grow and make profits.
