If selling online isn't working out for you - check this guy out - makes $55K/yr selling candy!

http://vimeo.com/30865514

Source: http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2011/12...on-the-subway/

Quote:
Excuse me ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please. Pardon the interruption..."

The announcement is familiar to many New Yorkers, who as they ride the subway, get visits from various people
asking for their spare change, sometimes in exchange for an accordion tune, a belted 1960s ballad, or a pack of M&M peanuts. Probably few of those travelers know that
at least one of those peddlers earns $150 a day.

Alex "Tracks" McFarland started selling candy on the subway at age 11, and is the subject of a two-minute documentary by Bianca Consunji (via New York magazine). With his 13 years of experience, Tracks knows the business well. Peanut M&Ms is his biggest seller, but he's got Welch's Fruit Snacks if you prefer your candy grape-flavored and gummy.

There are trail mix bars "for people who like to eat healthy," he says. "But this has got the most sugar in it," he chuckles.

Tracks carries cookies too -- Famous Amos chocolate chip and shortbread, "for people who claim they don't eat candy."

He covers every person's predilection. "If you don't spend a dollar with me, either you don't have it or you're a hater," he's concluded.

And many New Yorkers spend that dollar. Tracks walks the D train in $300 kicks, and takes home around $55,000 a year, in cash. "These M&Ms, I take care of my family with this," he tells the camera.

While it might frustrate some to learn that the man who hectors subway riders to buy a granola bar is making more money than many of those commuters, there is something impressive about Tracks' entrepreneurship.

He started selling candy in order to get out of the "hood," he says. And he not only offers a valued service -- helping boost the blood sugar of wilting travelers -- but he does it with a human face. And a side of entertainment.

Tracks summarizes his simple business strategy at the end of the film:

"I do what I gotta do, just to stay on my feet.

I'm flipping them sweets, I sell cavities,

and s*** believer, hole in your teeth."
It's all about putting a little muscle behind your hustle and having fun amidst the bustle

wow... that rhymes. Who knew?

Does not surprise me at all, people that work the trains and hustle for money make money. Lazy people who just bitch and stay home on their block stay broke.

Some of the hot dog vendors in NYC are multi millionaires...

Same observation goes for panhandlers. I believe I read it here on GFY where a member posted about finding out about a guy who makes $800 a day panhandling. The downside of the story is that apparently the dude blew it all on meth.

Just like with any peddler/hustle situation, it's all about LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION.

Somewhat similar to SEO - your location (keyword targets/niche) plus hustle (ranking skills / panda beating skills) = $ or cents

i watched the vid and he seems rather charming.

i suspect he could easily get a well paid job.

he looks like an actor to be honest. i am suprised he has not been given a job on tv.

Well the worst thing you can do is give money to a panhandler, by giving them anything you will keep them in that location. Where I used to live a panhandler would open the door for you as you enter KFC, on the way out is when he asked you for money. I lot of people gave him money, so he knew the location was good. I usually walk past these guys looking in the opposite direction...so you don't need to interact at all. On the subway just keep reading your book or act like your sleeping, never make eye contact.

On vacation in Puerto Rico a guy kept harassing me for money and police just came out of nowhere and arrested the guy, in NYC it is usually ignored...most likely too much paperwork.

This is a good example of a guy defining a need and filling it. People on the subway clearly want something to snack on and he supplies it.

It kind of reminds me of these kids that live in the town next to me. The town has a big rodeo and fair over the week of the 4th of July. The house these kids live in is directly across the street from the fairgrounds. Every year they set up a booth selling ice cold soda pop, water and some snack foods. You can buy a can of Coke from them for $1.00 or you can go inside and pay three times that in the fair. They do huge business. It only lasts a week, but I wouldn't be shocked to hear that they clear $500-$750 a day for that week.

I wonder that too.

Several years ago a friend of mine started making and selling computers as a side job. He did pretty well with it and made some nice extra cash.

Another friend of mine who is very knowledgeable about computers had been wanting to do the same thing. He made a few for people, but never had the drive to go after more clients and make more. He actually was pissed at the friend who was making some nice money. When I asked him why he said it was because the guy made computers out of shitty parts. I then suggested he do just the opposite and make high end machines for those looking for quality not price. He didn't go for it, but was still angry that the other guy was making moeny doing something he wanted to do.

So if he does it pretty much every weekday that's around $200 a day... wonder what his profit margin is? At 20% he would make $1000 worth of gross sales each day. That's a lot of candy...

I think it is for many here.

This guy is getting out there and hustling. Good for him if he's doing it without intimidation and paying his taxes. Better than drawing benefits. All power to him.

Begging on the other hand should be stamped out hard. Recent documentary on Roma Gypsies begging in the UK and it exposed them by showing their mansions back home. It featured Rumanian gypsies.

55k/yr tax free is great! Way more than I make. Theres a kid on the 6 train line that sells cans of cold soda for $1 and loose cigarettes for .50 cents. They should team up.

Yea, probably publicly says $55k since it's public just in case IRS catches wind of it.
