When is appropriate age to tell your kid Santa is not real?

I just did, my daughter cried, my ex wants to file for full custody.

She's 9... Thoughts?

you cruel bastard, there's no reason to tell a child Santa doesn't exist, they learn it on their own. your daughter is 9, if she still believes in Santa at 9 she's probably mildly retarded - let her have her fantasies.

now go to her bedroom and tell her Daddy just played a pretty mean joke on her and of course Santa Claus is real. it's probably a good time though to tell her that Jesus is a total crock of shit.

Tell them as soon as they see a Santa but tell them it's really fun make believe.

Don't let your children grow up stupid.

That was a shitty thing to do...

The appropriate age? When they TELL YOU he is not real. Then they are probably old enough to deal with the concepts, old concepts anyway behind the meaning of the character.

If you really did that you have told your child you lie to them. They cannot trust you anymore...you broke a bond that should not have been broken...at age 9.

But if he didn't tell the kid Santa was not real until the kid figured it out when older;
then didn't he still lie to the kid?

Seriously, regardless of age - who the fuck would tell their kid that a couple weeks before Christmas?!

According to a Disney survey, between 7 and 8 years old is average. It appears that how much of a shock it is partly depends on how parents present the idea of Santa. If parents talk about how Saint Nick is an example of the spirit of joyful giving, the transition to learning about the "first" (real) Saint Nick.

Do you believe that? Saint Nick is in fact the patron saint of children. He did in fact leave gifts in people's shoes, which is where Christmas stockings come from. He lived in the fourth century. In Dutch, Saint Nicklaus is transliterated Sinterklaas (Sinterklaas = Santa Claus).

Small children visualize both Saint Nick and God as old men with beards who grant wishes. Most of us mature as we grow older and grow out of that point of view. A few of us assume that the childish point of view is the only possible way of thinking and therefore conclude that everything we don't fully understand is completely fake, except of course aliens.

do i believe what? that Santa Claus doesn't exist or that Jesus is a crock of shit?

children should be believe in anything - monsters under the bed, imaginary friends, Santa, God - it's adults who believe in fairy tales that are the danger.

and yes of course I know that Santa Claus is based on a real person but the version we know, the red suit, the North Pole, elves, reindeer sleigh - commercial artists working for advertising agencies dreamed that up.

Well, interesting replies.

My daughter has a serious problem in that she always believes her mother. My ex is a habitual liar, she used to lie when she didn't even need to. So, Santa was real, she swore. My daughter figured it out pretty much last year when Santa presents and my presents were wrapped in the same paper... lol.

But, mommy swore Santa was real. All those Santa's at the mall were Santa's helpers, not elves, but the special Santa helpers. LOL

So topic came up and I laid it out. I did talk about the actual Saint and the "myth" of the story. Anyway, she did cry, she did tell her mom, and smoke is now coming out of her mothers ears.

I don't know, when I was 9 I had a DS80 motorcycle and shooting BB guns, and I sure as fuck knew those didn't come from Santa.

It was the right time, then. Telling a kid fun stories is one thing, lying when they've figured it out and come to you for confirmation of the truth is another. Once they figure out it's just a story, like Sponge Bob, I think it's time to confirm it or at least just ask them to tell you what they think, but not lie and say they are wrong about their suspicions.

I say let children hold on the magic, innocence, and imagination of childhood as long as they can. There will be plenty of time for "the facts of life" to be beaten into them for the rest of their lives.

When your kid comes to you and asks, "Is Santa Claus real?" Then they are ready to be told. You don't have to volunteer the info IMHO.

I heard the rumors around school, realized Santa didn't make any sense, discussed with my parents and they confirmed.

I had amazing childhood. My parents were absolutely amazing. My parents are still amazing to this day. I have always felt loved and had a home to come home to.

My parents never lied to me, Santa was always a cute joke. I was also not a stupid child. If your child cannot figure it out for themselves at an early age they most likely have problems and will be taken advantage of when they are older.

This projected innocence is completely fake. It breeds a society of mis trust because children and teens have everyone around then lying at them until they are "adults". But you are to stupid to understand.

Why does not believing in Santa mean you are miserable? Do you still believe in Santa? Are you miserable? It makes 0 sense and is a blanket statement.

If you want me to go further i can make you look like a complete idiot.

Parents use the concept of Santa to keep kids in line and society uses the concept of God to keep adults in line. You've all been duped, from the day you learn your first words to the day you take your last breath.

Shit I figured it out on my own when I was 6. And since I was the only Jewish kid in my class I didn't care... and told others why it was impossible for Santa to exist :p

They will get all the info they need about it, from their friends in school. Then it becomes a nudge nudge, wink wink, I know all about it

LOL. You clearly don't have kids.

Nice attempt at trolling but you're laying on the stereo-types JUST a little bit too thick!
