Will Wheaton, world's best expert on...um... well... on... performing as Ensign Crusher on an outdated television series.
Ahh yeah, that was what he is an expert on. I almost forgot. |

Here is Wheaton's quote from the article: "I have lost more money to creative accounting, and American workers have lost more jobs to runaway production, than anything associated with what the MPAA calls piracy. Chris Dodd is lying about piracy costing us jobs. Hollywood’s refusal to adapt to changing times is what’s costing the studios money. That’s it."
I will agree with him that the entertainment industry itself is rife with "creative accounting" and various things that fuck people out of money. Also, Chris Doddis for sale and is corrupt. However, he is free to finance his own project, distribute how he sees fit and make his own money outside the system. Just like if you are a construction worker who works for a union and you are sick of the union you are free to leave, start your own construction company and do your own thing. |

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/201...10310122.shtml those facts are already a public record and unlike the claims of loses from piracy, which are based on speculation/insane assumptions that 100% of downloads would have bought the most expensive copy they could have, those number are hard real costs. |

Okay I admit I may have been a bit hasty. I now stand corrected.
There are two people who care what Wil Wheaton has to say. :D

While nothing is stopping Wheaton from getting investors, producing his own stuff, Hollywood and the distribution companies are still the gatekeepers. For him to sell his stuff on iTunes, he needs to have a rating that has to be paid for that is also run by the movie studios. Don't pay for the rating, can't distribute on iTunes much less advertise on broadcast networks. Hollywood controls nearly every viable avenue when it comes to movies. The fact that Darth Vader still has not received residuals because Return of the Jedi still has yet to show a profit exposes the creative accounting that goes on. There is a reason Hollywood spends as much money as they do on lobbying and it's not because they want a level playing field to compete on. |

A person could do that, then sell their DVD on their website and Amazon as well as other places and they potentially could get pay per view options and even license it to cable/TV. It isn't an ideal situation, but it could be done and if it is done correctly a person potentially could make more than if they just starred in a movie someone else owned. |

Still, if he is using those clips in a legitimate fair use way he should still have no problem. If a copyright holder filed a complaint against him he might have to prove the fair use rights, but so long as he is not doing anything shady he should have no worries. |

I didn't see a showing of Red State. I saw an interview with him about what his plans were as far as taking it around the country and he never did a screening in my city. Had he done a screening here I would have tried to get tickets to go see it. Also, did you actually read the article you linked to? I just did and I didn't see him complaining at all about wasting money for Oscar consideration. He, along with help from Quentin Tarantino, arranged the screenings so that the cast could get considered for Oscars. He even says in the story that if you feel the $20 ticket price for those screenings is too much, skip it and in a couple of weeks you can get it on pay per view for $9.99. Please show me the part in the article where he is complaining about wasting money on those screenings. If he complains about anything it is when he says, "And if you don't want to pay to see it at all, you'll likely be able to download a Bit Torrent version for free by the end of the Red State Labor Day debut. And still, someone will bitch that even THAT costs too much somehow." that is him bitching at the freeloaders, not the Oscars. |

I know a guy named James Westby who writes and directs his own movies. He 4 walls most of his movies. He takes them from city to city and struck deals with local independent movie theaters. In some cases they split the ticket sales with him. In others he had to pay a flat fee to rent the building for his run and he kept all the profit. He actually does decently with them. He isn't getting rich, but he was getting his work out there and making enough money to cover his costs, live and pay for the budget for the next movie. Recently he has worked as an editor on bigger budget movies and he has enough movies under his belt that he could potentially raise money and do something bigger, but he also knows that as soon as you bring in other people they want a say in how it is made and doesn't want to surrender that control. |

he sold out the shows in other cities at $65-$85 per seat thru the smodcast. He got reports thru the media about people complaining about paying $20 for this showing. And he address that issue with the press. and surprise surprise they misrepresented his objection to model wrongfully categorized his showing as $20 rip off movie showing to be a complaint about his fans. read thru the blogs watch his sundance speach listen to the blogs on smodcast then come back after you heard the statements from the man directly. |

I don't really give a shit how he sold his tickets. I like the guy and am a fan of his movies and I'm glad this was a success for him no matter how it happened. If it was through his podcast, great. If it was because he was famous and got a lot of press about this tour great. None of this really matters to me. |
