What is the current state of the Russian military? Last I heard it was in shambles and partially funded by the United States (Namely nuclear scientists).

I'm really confused why Russia isn't more concerned about Iran's nuclear power. Being as they are so close, if Iran has it's own Chernobyl, Russia would suffer the most.

Exactly. Georgian army has attacked Russian peace keepers in Ossetia (many of them were killed). This is a direct declaration of war on Russia. So what Russia should do in such a situation? Stay aside a watch as its soldiers being killed? No one country in the world would act this way. Thus Russian military forces had the only way to go. The way to the Georgia. Is there anybody who believe it was unfair/unreasonable?

As about the quoted part. Putin wasn't Russian president in 2008. So all the sentence has no sense

Russia makes a lot of money off of Iran (by selling weapons, mainly).

It's in their best interest than Iran is not "liberated".

The move of military force is supposed to send a message that Russia would support Iran if someone tries to liberate it.

If this could be wired up in such a way so as to avoid a general war but result in Russia occupying Iran militarily, that wouldn't necessarily be such a bad thing.

Providing, of course, that:

a) The Strait of Hormuz is placed under international control.

I don't have any links to anything, but I just finished reading a book about Russian submarines during the cold war. The end of the book discussed how the US was funding nuclear scientists, including salaries and housing, in order to support them and prevent them from working for terrorists. The amount of support mentioned seemed to be a lot more than just the US paying to dismantle old nukes.

If China decided to declare the air space above my house a no fly zone I would be thrilled to death. Between the Sacramento Airport and Beale Air Force Base, the air space above my house is pretty crowded. (Although I do have to admit I do get a little chub during the rare event one of their jets goes screaming over my house.) I am guessing the US government might have a few issues with China's no fly zone, however.

I'm not going to debate the no fly zones over Iraq. I was merely pointing out that during the Clinton administration, Iraq fired on the US on a daily basis and shot down our planes and we didn't do much about it.

No, I don't miss anything, but you do. Russian peace keepers came into Ossetia according to the agreement with Georgia. I.e. Georgia has officially invited them in 1992 and then attacked them in 2008.

As about the US planes in the Iraqi sky, so they were invaders (Iraq didn't asked them to patrol the sky). What do you think will be with the US plane it it decide to "patrol" the Chinese or Russian sky? I tell you the secret: the plane will be shot down and it will be right. The same will do the US air-defense to the Chinese or Russian plane, and it also will be right.
