I'll have to go with Mulholland Drive. It was the first time I saw Naomi Watts in a movie, and she bared her fucking soul in that flick. I was thinking "who the hell is this girl?"
As far as giving me a physical emotional reaction, recently I saw Haachi, A Dog's Tale. It's about a dog who waits at the train station for years for his dead master to come home. Both me and my wife were wrecked after watching it. If you can get through that movie without crying, then you might be a zombie.

Ok just because she bared her tits didn't mean the other 95% of her performance wasn't great.....
but that lesbo ho-down scene was some pretty sexy shit.

The scene near the beginning with Craig T Nelson and Jobeth Williams smoking weed, and joking around before bed. You never see any scenes like that these days, with a movie couple acting like a real couple in a good, long scene. The middle of the night scene where a few characters have a conversation in whispers. It goes on a long time, and it's all in whispers. When I think about it, it was pretty cool -- and another example of the difference in the way films were made then, even Blockbusters like Poltergeist. They weren't afraid to take their time and let a scene play out, because people didn't have the attention span of a fly back then. The use of silence is great, especially before all hell breaks loose near the end. Jobeth Williams overdid it a little, but she really seemed like a mom who was desperate and willing to anything in the world to get her daughter back. One of the most iconic film images in my head is the scene of them kissing before she goes into the door with all the light. The cinematography, music and everything is perfect there. Sorry, I had to geek out for a second about that movie. If there's anyone left on the planet who hasn't seen Poltergeist, then go watch it.

Not really sure about "affecting" me but will mention Punch-Drunk Love and Eternal Sunshine since in both I could relate to the main characters a lot.
That said, just thinking of movies that really stand out as affecting me, I'd have to go with something horror. I have to admit, not that I fly often but I certainly wasn't eager to for a while after Final Destination. Also, seeing The Omen as a kid freaked me out quite a bit and gave me nightmares.

The Matrix. Caused me to start questioning everything, including the nature of reality.

Yeah, In hindsight, I shouldn't have asked the question like that. I was looking for films that messed with peoples minds.
On a personal level, I was trying to avoid that masturbatory feeling I would get when going to movies like THE WARRIORS, THE ROAD WARRIOR, and SCARFACE when growing up. I was looking for films that messed with peoples minds. Then came TRUE ROMANCE, and I discovered I still hadn't grown up, and then came GTA III and oops another boner ![]() There are quite a variety of movies listed here, some really awesome ones I had forgotten about by the way. |

Fight Club and the Matrix - Fight Club made me question myself and my motivations, what I do everyday and what I want from my life. Made me realize that "Keeping Up with the Jones' " was a useless and stupid endeavor.
Matrix made me question the world around me - my environment and how much "control" I really have over my life. I take very little at face value now because of this film.
