BUSINESS THREAD: How You Can Do It Alone?

Many times people have asked me this question: "How can you do all that you do, alone, as a single person?*"

So I decided to answer that question on a slow summer Tuesday.

Short answer: I do not "do it alone".

Semi-short answer: After years of doing everything myself and doing most tasks "by hand" I found the key to freedom. I can sum it up in a short phrase for you: "Automate everything (you can)".

Long answer: If you are a single person trying to build and run an online adult "empire" of ever-expanding size at some point it becomes nearly impossible to do everything yourself. You can only work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for so long without a complete meltdown....

So you need to figure out a way to maximize your efforts and free yourself of the back-breaking daily grind of doing repetitive tasks alone. GET YOURSELF SOME OUTSOURCED EMPLOYEES.

I have 7-10 employees (the number flucuates depending on the work load). They include:

video editors
video uploaders
full-time designer
PHP and Java programmer
Social Media marketer

I own and run about 32 paysites, a network and an affiliate program. How can I do all this as a "single person"? I can't, and couldn't, for very long, and yet I DO "run it myself" in that I'm the Boss, it's my "World" (Mister Peabody World) and everyone else is just living in it. I communicate with everyone online so when I look around my little office it certainly feels like I'm doing it alone - but I'm really not.

It's Magic!

There are many resources you could be taking advantage of here on the World Wide Web. Feel overwhelmed? Feel "stuck in a rut"? Can't take your business to the next level? Consider using sites like fiverr.com and odesk.

Some will balk at paying money to make money but those who complain are satisfied with where they are tho they may bitch endlessly about not "making it big". You simply MUST spend money to make money at some point or stagnate.

So how much to spend? Where to spend it? NO better allocation of funds could be found than through hiring employees. PEOPLE will make your business grow more than advertising, more hosting accounts or any other expense we spend our money on as Webmasters.

Hope this glimpe into my inner workings have helped some (or any) of you. NO ONE should spend their life in front of a monitor unless you're so broke you're willing to work for $2 an hour and live in India.

* For the Idiots: "single person" does not exclude married people.

My question isn't handling the business aspect of it but more along the lines of managing your business in your personal life.

A lot of people don't mind as long as it's kept quiet.

How does it work around family?

As someone how literally does do it alone. Automate everything has been the key for me for a long time. Spend the time in the programming stage so that I can make it flow better for me and my members on the other side.

Both. These days you really have to do your own SEO work in addition to what affiliates do because most affiliates today are promoting a lot of programs.

For me I "hide" behind a little green cartoon character named Mister Peabody. LOL But it really does depend on what we're talking about here when it comes to family and what you do (or don't do).

I mean, an affiliate just sells porn, usually doesn't shoot it him or herself. But if we're talking being a performer, even an "amateur" one doing niche work, that's a whole differant ballgame.

For the affiliate or anyone "just selling" online porn I would say, if it's an issue, tell your family you do "online marketing". When they ask what you market start talking tech speak, like "Oh, I resell dedicated server packages from independant and network connected hosting companies, usually based offshore trying to break into the American upsell market via cross-promotional..." They're usually thinking about food by this point.

If you're a "performer" then, well, act outraged when Grandma says something, or Uncle Sleazy sees you on PornHub. "That's not ME!!! I'm gonna SUE!!!" Or just smile and shrug your shoulders....:D

You didn't mention shutting down a LOT of your sites for what? 742 years? Do you actually have ANY Felucia Blow content available?

I actually shut down a tube site that was built around your content becuse all of your sites went "Buh-Bye..."

You might not be the best example of "Doing It Alone..." Its good to see you're still kicking, but waiting for your sites that crapped out to pull up their pants and get their shit together is not what in my job description.

Shit, I don't even get update emails from you anymore.

Felucia leaves... ALL of your videos are down - yet things are good. Cool. I deleted all your content about a year and a half ago - after you ASKED me to delete it.

Won't be putting up anything new from you! Sorry or Not!

A. Bite me

B. You didn't bother to CONTACT ME via ICQ or any other way, including responding to the email you obviously received, to discuss ways you could've KEPT all your Fellucia links up and still make money because that site STILL converts, now did you?

C. the story of how that site came down is well-documented and even you, the great snarky Garce, apologized once you realized who was really responsible, but your wine-addled brain obviously doesn't remember this.

D. Not putting up anything of mine, including the better-than-Fellucia www.erosexotica.com, is madness and proof you're a childish grudge-holder with memory loss and a bad attitude. Being Canadian I'm inclined to forgive you such deficiencies but since you're shitting in my positive business thread.....:

E. Bite me.

Thanks for answering my question MisterPeabody. You've answered this question differently before but this is pretty clear cut.

Yes being male talent and working with models is very different from just any an affiliate setup.

Last summer, just over a year ago today, I stayed with a producer who really isn't making much money currently. He's got a lot of estate setup in other things but continues because he loves girls so much. anyway...
Point is he's been married twice and his 2nd wife split up with him in part because of all the naked models (and I'm sure he indulged himself at the time as well) roaming around the house and with their children there as well.
They were looking at an amicable divorce but then her lawyer decided that they could make some accusations. They then said that he molested his two daughters and because he was a pornographer it played fairly well. It came down to supervised visits at a local YMCA, he said forget it and just writes to his daughters now.

Funny side note... When at his ex's house he got into it and the cops had to come. After a few minutes the cops began to see her for what she really was. Well... fast forward a few months later and 2 of those cops ended up performing in his productions.
When out there it came to light that this producers neighbor was the coworker of his main talent; small world.

People online tend to be in many fronts so covering an affiliate side isn't too hard.

It comes down to what you want in life. Mister Peabody you said once that many people are riddled with regret near the end of their lives for not having lived how they wanted to and doing what others approved of, you are certainly right about that.

There are many answers as to how to deal with revealing what we do online to people not "in the Biz". It really does depend on so many factors, like the people involved, the relationships, etc. For me there are only a few people in my life whose opinions matter to me so I can laugh off the rest of the world. LOL Heck, how I answer the "What do you do?" question depends on my mood and caffiene levels.

In the example you gave it's exceptionally tough when children are involved. Then again, chances are that the wife would've found some other way to torture the husband even if he never did porn. But being a pornographer definitely made it tougher for him, and for that I'm sorry. Hopefully when the children get older they will understand the circumstances better and not blame him.

This ties into my response above because I really, truly, honestly do not give a flying diddlyfuck what someone thinks of what I do for a living. It is legal and I run my business as responsibly as i can given my limited resources and basically try not to be a dickhead. LOL So what if someone frowns at the fact that I have a network of adult-oriented websites? I probably make more than he does but even if I don't I can almost gaurantee I have a sweeter, less stressful and more joyful life than he is experiencing.

So, again, fuck 'em if they can't take a joke. Good luck to you and your pornographer friend!!

The key to ODesk and porn is you need to label everything "adult" in order to post jobs. If you just say 'video editor needed' then mainstream people will respond, too. So I always put 'adult video editor' etc.

The other "trick" is to hire 3 candidates for the same 'test job'. Give each of the applicants a simple task and pay them a small amount (say $25 dollars) then see which candidate performs best and hire that person. Saves an enormous amount of time.
