Gamification of porn

So, I use Waze, a great free sat nav app. It is gamified with points for doing certain things. If you report a problem you get points, if you use it certain days in a row you get points, rewards, badges etc.

Who is working on gamifying porn?

I can see it working. Logging on every day, rating a scene, posting a comment, downloading x amount etc etc.

I've not seen it done, but wondered if anyone is doing it. I imagine it would boost retention on a membership site.

So, has anyone gamefied their sites?

I'm working on something like this, although not porn I guess its mature subject matter though and implements achievements and challenges to the site among other things.

I think it adds extra substance that makes people want to come back and you could even add incentives based on activity, etc. It's fun stuff.

It could definitely make sense in a porn site

Damian Donation to Charities.

Damian promised that if Paul shot the scene for Manwin He would donate the same amount as Paul's fee to a charity.

Paul has chosen either of these children's for the donation.

I think we should all thank Damian for this great gift.

I've taken a different approach, instilling elements of game play into a project site.

For example, much of the content is only accessible if you successfully solve a puzzle or click on a page element that may have a transient link into premium content areas, etc.

I was inspired by the gold and platinum bolts, weapons and upgrades in the Ratchet & Clank Playstation series...

No Paul, gamification is adding siple elements like earning points, getting badges for accomplishments etc to a product to make it more likely people will go back to it.

Go read up on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamification and then let us know if you think it would be a good idea or not.

Better yet, post a wall of text on your own forum about something else.

We have been working on this in our new beta member section that is in soft launch, available to members. I didn't know there was a term for it but we were also inspired by gamer points and message board status hierarchy, rewarding longevity, of course, but also participation, like writing reviews, rating videos, using the message board, posting pics, etc. It is a way of tacitly acknowledging the customers and making them feel like they are part of the experience beyond just jerking off...

Think about it... that is the world today's generation of customers grew up in and the more disposable income that generation has to step it up and pay for their porn like adults then the easier it is for them to connect with the site on some level, the better.

Same kinda thing Microsoft did when they came up with achievement points for Xbox games. Keeps people coming back. I heard of people that were buying games just to get another easy 1000 points added to their gamerscore. Sounds stupid but Sony was very quick to implement it after they seen how it was working out on the Xbox.

Easy to test. Convince a site to install it on a page in the site, see how many use it.

Also sell this feature on the tour, see how many go look at this feature and then sign up to play the game. Yes I read about it. for games it's great. We sell wanking.

Maybe affiliates would like to test this idea to sell porn. Put a game before a Tube video.

Exactly!

Glad someone is trying it. So many places in mainstream have been using gamification to increase stickiness for years, I knew someone would be trying in adult. Well done!

Read the link I posted earlier, you still don't seem to understand the concept.

It's not about putting a game before a video. It's about rewarding your customers for actions and increasing retention via this interaction.

This is old, but Gartner predicts that 50% of companies will be using gamification by 2015

Adult is so behind mainstream...

Thanks for the link so it's the viewer selecting how the scene progresses to the cum shut. Like Saboom.

Where's the game and what's the prize?

Paul, gamification means you take ELEMENTS of gameplay and incorporate them into a non-game product.

For example, as I said at the start, my sat nav gives you points for doing certain things. Badges for doing certain things. It encourages people to keep using the product.

With porn you could get points for viewing scenes, commenting on scenes, rating scenes, posting in the forum, sharing on twitter a pic you like etc etc etc etc etc

It has nothing whatsoever to do with playing a game, per se.

Hope that helps.

If you read the links I posted they explain in more detail.

Giving away badges and points might increase 'stickiness' on game sites, or free sites, but then so would giving away porn.

Some porn sites will probably do it, because pornographers are nothing if not totally unimaginative, and porn sites have always copied other sites/each other, but anyone who thinks someone will continue to pay $30/month for the ability to win 'points' or 'badges', if the porn content alone isn't enough to make them, is delusional.

OK I saw that point on the links and was trying to relate it to a paid porn site.

So instead of grabbing the lube and rubbing one out, the member starts to play the game to get a badge, for the very top prizes a baseball cap. With an emblem of Gayboys Bukake Party or something like it. Or a free bottle of lube, or points for a free day if he wins.

So this is going to increase the stickyness of a paysite.

Can the member download 100 scenes during a month or is it limited?

Glad you're watching this thread Damian.

Can I ask you about the donation to charity you promised last year.

If you can't afford $3,000 we can make it a smaller sum. I'm sure everyone would understand.

Paul, we had a seminar on this topic at the XBIZ Miami show, you would have enjoyed it.

In my example, you don't win a baseball cap, you get membership-level access for free (you could pay for a membership to have full, instant access - or play to get it).

When Windows Solitaire first came out, I saw folks playing it for hours each day.

THAT is the kind of ADDICTION that I want my site's users to have.

Sure, it may only be a fraction of users that want this aspect, so it doesn't "get in the way" of regular use, but when Google and others increasingly value "time on site" as a ranking metric, the visitors that I have spending hours "playing" the site, skews the rank.

There's a LOT to this, and it's not just about taking your old pics and using them as face cards in a Flash poker game or some such, but there's many possibilites...

I am afraid you still don't understand. The user is not "playing a game" per se, but rather getting rewarded as if normal usage earned merit in a game-like way.

I was working with a company to build a massive gamification scheme (I didn't know what the term was) a couple years ago. They then lost their funding and the owner took the code with him and has since kind of disappeared. It was based on the old iwon.com

Paul, as usual, is a totally clueless fucking idiot.

Paid up members playing it for hours and retaining. That's great. What % of paid members are doing this?

We can see how well this one works, I will take the thread url and come back to it in a year.

Damian should be able to tell us how it works now though. He must of sold the idea to his clients and split tested it with them. Got the stats on this Damian?

I see you're ignoring posts about your promise to donate to a charity.

Huh? I'm not saying I've done it and it was great. I was thinking about it and posted asking if anyone knew if porn sites had tried it. It's just a discussion thread. Not me posting a wall of text about how I am always right that no one reads. Just a thought. If you don't understand or like the thought, that's just fine. Sorry I wasted your time trying to explain it. Everyone else gets it and it's been interesting (to me) to hear about the examples.

So damian what about this charity you were suppose to donate to? Between you and dumb and dumber, what's up?

I quite remember you sticking your nose into a GTS thread that you had no clue about. So I will admit I have no clue what this bet is about so how about you tell us.

What on earth does it have to do with you, love?

Here's the thing.

I post saying I donated. Paul demands proof. I post proof. Paul claims it was photoshopped. This has happened when Paul paid money to a stalking site to try and find out where I lived. I posted lots of proof. He just said it was a photoshop.

Or I post saying it was a 'joke' like Paul did when he said his friends thought it would be bad for him to be in charge of 15 year old children.

I'm fairly sure most kids' charities would find it hard to take money on behalf of a man who said teachers need, and I quote, a "will of iron" to resist fucking the kids they looks after.

Doesn't really matter either way, does it? There is no winning situation. So I am ignoring him when he mentions it.

My charity donations remains private.

I do really appreciate you joining in with DVTimes trolling it though, makes you look like a real man. Well done.

I'm off to a festival for the weekend. You enjoy playing with your new chum DVTimes. Change your sig too, you could be pals forever!

So what do you think about gamification of porn? People could get points every time they bought an ad from you that didn't work. It'd be great!

OK got it, you don't know if it will work and rather than putting into your blog, or into a clients site to test it. You came here and tell everyone about it. so if it does work, everyone copies the idea for free and no one gets a lot of benefit. Marketing tip, give ideas to clients first.

And here's him talking about me never having any intentions of doing the shoot and posting for trolling.

I doubt if he has $3,000 and as usual talking out of his ass.

Paul, do you even run a paysite these days? I know you were able to retire on magic joins and all, but in all seriousness, how on earth do you feel qualified to say anything at all? You clearly don't even get the concept, nor do you know how to retain members on a paysite, which is something you have even conceded yourself.

You know, when you do talk about things you actually know about, like selling cheap sets to skin mags sold in discount bundle packs, you come off with a fair degree of erudition. The only problem is most people here could care less about that and see it as ancient history.

Great content is only part of the equation when plenty of competitors all have great content too; what is so hard to relate to or understand there? Getting an actual biz thread is hard enough on GFY these days without people hitting them for no better purpose than to derail the discussion.

So you attack me rather than discussing my point.

As for cheap sets. Well out of the price range of Homegrown. Homegrown wouldn't pay me enough to get my content. When we met.

Great content today is more important than anything. The reasons are obvious.

You need great content to drive traffic off site showing samples.

You need great content on the tour to convert the traffic better.

You need great content to retain the members or get them to return to the site for more at a later date.

Now if you think adding a game to a site will trump any of these, go ahead and discuss it.

Still I understand most sites problem, great content isn't cheap and needs to be kept up. A one off game is and that's it. Unless you have to keep spending money to shoot scenes. If those scenes are wooden content. The point of the exercise is defeated. So you need great content for your gamification.

Do you get good conversions off a tube site with bad or good or great content?

So as we're talking now about getting a site to have more pull and more retention, let's look deeper than something that is little more than an app. Yes guys it's something for playing on your phone while waiting for the bus to arrive.

Tube videos have to sell the girl, her video and the site. Cutting it out of a video designed to get someone off isn't as good. Shoot samples videos.

Retention/conversion. Present models as real people doing real sex and enjoying it. Enough people show "Porn Valley" girls doing their act over and over again. Online porn is stuffed full of faceless girls, give them a character. Good girls can come back for more. Bad ones don't finish the day and go home early. Shooting filler content is going to piss them off. Going this different route will cut you apart, not totally but enough.

Homegrown sells on the lure of it's real. Shooting other niches have to be real as well to convince the viewer enough to want to buy.

Worry less about HD and more about the girl and how she comes across and how you fill the screen with. HD is wide screen, shooting her in a lot of positions means a landscape view of the room.

Convert/retain better will get you more traffic and money.

Paul has damian paid up yet?

or ha s he backed down AGAIN?

He has a history of not paying as he said he would pay me £1000 then backed down. He also stated he would give a webmaster a laptop but so far he seems not to have.

Best thing paul is not to trust him.

Hey guys. Someone else mentioned this thread to me and I thought I would comment briefly. My full time job (mainstream) right now is directly involved with building the world's best gamification platform to help site owners increase loyalty and retention on their sites?and ultimately sales. I've also worked in the adult industry since about 2003 and am familiar with virtually every aspect of the biz.

Gamification is a rapidly expanding field. As metioned above Gartner has said that 50% of certain industries will be using gamification by 2015

As far as e-commerce is concerned, it will spark an arms race. Attention is harder and harder to come by. Gamification is a framework of technologies that utilizes aspects from human psychology and game design to make sites more engaging. This means people perform more actions on your site (productivity if you want to use the webmaster jargon), they stay on your site longer, and they come back more often. Sites that don't employ gamification will lose their users to sites that do.

How well it works depends on what it is you are trying to encourage people to do and how you are doing it. Certain contexts work really well and others... not so much. I've seen anywhere from 15% to 5000% increases in user activities depending on the case.

I will write up a series of tutorials about what you need to know to employ gamification (principles of psychology, technologies, and effective ways to integrate them) and how I think it can be effectively employed in the industry.

Until then, feel free to hit me up on ICQ.

Brilliant thread. Attempted hijacking by typical GFY douchebaggery but an excellent question. I've been working on this for some time now. The hardest part I've experienced is not creating fun things to do with my sites it is getting the sponsors/networks to play ball.

If anyone from a dating network sees this that is willing to play ball let's chat, I have a really good thing building!

1. As a freebie it will work, on a social network, game site it might. On a porn site???????????

2. Will it work as well as having naked girls live and online. Or as having really great innovative porn added every day, making the porn more personal????????????????

Is it cheaper than 2.? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES

Tried something along these lines not that long ago.

Members signed up for free and could access a few sets and they got 100 points to open more sets.

Then they could earn points by completing simple tasks. Got a few thousand email members from it and ended up closing it because it was more work than what it generated cash wise.

I'm amazed and somewhat flattered Damian cares so much about what I think and that he won't put up the proof because I won't believe him. While ignoring what every one else here thinks of him.

What do I think about gamification of porn?

That's an easy one to answer. The cost of doing the games will ever show enough profit to make it work. Now if someone can prove me wrong, let them show me.

I dunno - I honestly think the whole gamification thing is fucking lame. I realize some people go for it, and for whatever reason it's seemed to have gotten Foursquare a userbase that doesn't care about fucking their own privacy, but getting points for the sake of getting points is so 80s NES.

If you can actually redeem the points for shit, THEN I can understand it but otherwise it's a glorified e-penis.

Funny reading these threads, its like trying to have an intelligent conversation with some drunk obnoxious attention seeking idiot barging in.

Maybe before posting you should contact Markham, explain what the thread is about and suggest some intelligent comments he could post.

He could then come across as the intelligent guru he desperately needs to be.
