Best Unmanaged Server Host

I'm looking to get away from securedservers.com. Between their connection to file locker billing and their terrible support I think it's time to go.

I'm seriously considering 1and1 but their DC is in Kansas. Not sure if that's a great idea with all of the weather issues Kansas is known for. Prices are reasonable and I am not retarded so, as always, I will have backups.

Any other good, reasonably priced unmanaged hosts out there? I can manage my own server so I am strictly looking for unmanaged hosts.

While not marketed often, we also do a lot of unmanaged hosting- all hosts do. Happy to provide a quote by email.

Hey Babaganoosh

Our DC is simply amazing. I know you're not going to consider Webair really. My power and AC is as good as anyone elses. All hate aside, if all you need is a *server* and a place to get great *power*, *bandwidth* and *cooling* look no further than NY1 in New York City baby- 25 miles from the 'blast zone' and redundancy for 14 days on our kick ass generators.

Hope that made you smile.

Hit me up and I will rack that myself send you over the logins pronto.

Mike

Dont know about power but i had two hardware failures on webair yet i was not even one year on it,one server had disk drive dead very fast after initial setup. How much i remember it was faulty seagate series but still hosting company should be proactive when it comes to such things. One of thing which is good at mojohost where i am currently it's how never had any hardware problem in these two years.Probably because they monitor all servers no matter are they managed or not,for example when i had one server down they send me icq message to ask is everything ok.Doubt such service can be experienced anywhere else.

Until yesterday I would have recommended Amerinoc, without a doubt.

They seriously pissed me off today, but I guess anyone is allowed to make an occasional ugly mistake.

Overall I am happy.

I think most hosting companies offer un-managed service, some offer a few more whistles than others, some will include full monitoring and set the alerts to come directly to you... strongly suggest the monitoring.

We like some others do not market un-managed but we do have several clients that managed their own boxes. Data centers for us are Equinix, Ashburn Va., Equinix Toronto and our own in St. Louis Mo. all have backup generators (of course) redundancy is or should be important to any host.

Good luck no matter where you go!

Babaganoosh,

We'd love to work with you and provide a self-managed solution for your business. ISPRIME also offers off-site backups for its unmanaged customers.

Let me know what you need and I'll work out a good deal for you.

Secured Servers/ PhoenixNAP is pretty hard to beat. At least they caved on the filelocker issue. Why do you think their support is bad? I've never seen that myself.

If you really want true unmanaged then I say check out webhostingtalk.com and check around there. As far as supporting piracy goes make sure you aren't jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire so to speak because there are some bad ones out there. They make PhoenixNAP look like St. Peter.

I had a network issue a while back that knocked my server offline for about 16 hours. All I got from them was the condescending this is an unmanaged server and it's your problem line.

Them: "We have had our engineers test your network and there are no issues which could
be affecting you at the moment. We have also tested our security scripts and
your network is not being restricted in any form. ... we
suspect a possible configuration issue - please make sure you have programmed
the IP addresses to the correct interfaces - public IP addresses should be
assigned to the eth1 interface and the private backend IP should be assigned to
eth0. Unfortunately, Secured Servers does not provide any managed services and
therefore cannot assist in ensuring proper configuration. Please let us know if
you have any further questions or concerns. "

Me: "This looks like a physical media problem as I can ping the eth1 address
internally but not externally, nor can I ping the default router
internally, so it looks more likely to be the cable or the port on the
switch."

After that someone in the DC who was competent picked up the ticket and handled it. The eventual response:

"Thank you for your patience. We've discovered an issue on the network that was
preventing your server from being online. This has since been resolved and your
server is back online. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused
and please let us know if you have any questions."

That wrecked my confidence in them.

That's bullshit, it's their responsibility to ensure you're working up to your ethernet port and even if it's a hardware issue with your ethernet to fix that.

Why is it so hard to get reasonable service these days ? I see it everywhere, nobody actually taking responsibility for their products.

You're right. I'd rather try to turn a scientific calculator into a webserver and then slam my testicles in a desk drawer than use webair but props to you for having the huevos to make a sales pitch to me.

Usually I'm all about National Net, but I've used Jolokia for some projects and they were great. I forget the guy's name, down in Santa Cruz. I thinks LAJ knows him.

I think the owner's name is Mark Pace.

I switched to Razor Servers, unmanaged.. The deal was good, I saw pics of their new Dell servers arriving and them unboxing them, and it performs well. The caveats for me are they use WD Blue drives, which aren't enterprise level drives, and who knows what your host is really like until shit hits the fan. I don't imagine they have great support.

DC is in Philadelphia.

you need to escalate a lot faster with a down server, no matter who you are using. it sounds like you also need redundancy. all our servers have a mirror server (2nd drive on another server). we use www.edgedirector.com for ns and they provide failover. its all very easy with the right vendors. i think.

I wouldn't trust my money with a company in a different country you live in. Also a lot of these unmanaged servers are really virtual servers so be careful.

I take it you need root access and Linux on it?

Also I think they need a contract which is never good.

Nah this was no sales pitch. Can you argue that you will get better bandwidth, air conditioning and humidity control, 14 day generator backups, dual generators, all redundant- let me know. But really... ill get you whatever server name brand cpu disc ram whatever the heck you want. Its just a datacenter.
