My Cat is about to be put down...

I love him and he is 15 years old. He was my one true friend...

He has got ill, and rapidly detriated over the last few weeks...

The vet has him now, and I have said goodbye... But I'm gutted. Tears are streaming down my face.

Regardless of of if you dont like me as a person or a poster, please dont troll this thread..

Just positive thoughts from cat lovers?

Just this once?

Please?

No cats here but I can empathise with your pain. Once had to help an old Buddy of some 17 years on his way to the next life. A Big Dog which I had raised up from a puppy. He was born in my kitchen.

I held him in my lap while the the thing was done and I cried like a baby.

I am sorry for your loss and you need to know that although the pain never goes away, it does get better.

Thanks to both of you.

I am literally sobbing my fucking heart out here, with tears dropping on the keyboard...

I never thought it would affect me so badly...

It's around 6 am here in the Midwest and the old dog's great-nephew is sleeping under my desk now. Just had to bring him in as he had treed a raccoon and was raising all sorts of Hell. When I went out to get him in the dark I could only see his silhouette and it looked just like the old dog and I damned near didn't know what to do. Startled me because the goofy fucker under my desk has the same permanent "WTF?" look on his face that his uncle had and looks just like him.

I think I may have shed a tear or two.

Since my days and nights are reversed, it's Beer-Thirty time for me, so I'll raise a tall one to your kitty and to you. You take care and when the time is right and you will know when that time is, you go to the shelter and you get yourself another kitty to care for and love. Nothing heals the pain like doing that.

Be careful my friend and be kind to yourself.

The last of my three Rottweilers has bone cancer (Osteosarcoma) in his femur and doesn't have very much longer left. He's 11 years old so he's lived a long life but it's still hard.

It's important to remember that your cat has no concept of life and death. It doesn't want to live forever because it doesn't even understand the idea. All it knows is that it's in pain now. It also won't know when it's gone. It's only us that suffers.

You're doing the right thing for your friend and that's the way it has to be.

Sorry man, been thru the same. It's hard.

I've had several cats die these past years - the wife's cat was the worst. She freaked.

New cats now - and glad to have them. Keeping the cat spirit and all.

I really know how you feel, twice in the last four years I did the same, sobbed my eyes out and couldn't stay with them when the vet asked if I wanted to hold on to them while they were put down, I completely lost it. The first time, the male cat, was just short of 18, and I had to wait for a week while the tests came back, but it was horrid to see him deteriorate, his kidneys had gone, he couldn't climb on to the bed anymore, and had done that every day from the moment I got him. His sister lasted until she was nearly 22, I couldn't talk to the receptionist, just left a blank check and had to leave. To this day I still can't explain how I could cry so much, yet was okay when my parents died, and lots of close friends... I only reacted like this with my two cats.

Sad to hear that man.

But looking to the future, with every animal put down, 3 more are born to the world, in need of a good, quality, loving home.

I hope your cat will be remembered forever. But maybe you can adopt to help the next little creature have a great life (same great life that I'm sure your current cat has/had)

My cats mean the world to me.

I only had to put down 1 and it was very tough. She did appear to not suffer at all for which I was very glad. It was the right decision, but still very tough...

I still miss my old cat that died 5 years ago, she was 20 and only really deteriorated in the final month or so. She died rasping of breath, it was heart breaking, a sound I will never forget.

I feel your pain...

it may sound cruel, but ring up your local shelter today and get a new cat/kitten.
It'll 1/2 the pain.

We've got 5 new kittens in the village, if one of the little rascals would let me catch them, I'd send you one.

Had two cats that lived to their 20th year - one died naturally in my arms during the final trip to the vet...the other we had put down after her arthritis became too much.

Having to put your cat put down when it's that old and in too much pain is tough, but it's the ultimate act of compassion to end its' suffering at the expense of your broken heart.

Know that the cat would thank you if it could.

Rip Smokey.

I am sorry for your loss.

When my last cat died I was heart stricken - I literally ached with grief. A friend of mine found a kitten shortly after that, that needed a home and asked me to take it. Although I felt that it was much too soon, I agreed. I remember telling the kitten that I was sorry, but no matter how sweet she was, there was no way I would ever love her as much as I did my previous cat. I was wrong - I love her dearly, but differently than my departed boy.

I guess my point is that although you are grieving right now, and might feel that taking in another animal will somehow tarnish the memory of Smokey, you and the companion you may choose to adopt will both benefit. If it helps, you can think of it as Smokey's legacy: he moved on so that you can share your love with another who might desperately need it.

Again, my deepest condolences.

doing what you did in making the decision for Smoky is the hardest thing in the world. I'm been there, it's horrible. That said, making that decision for Smokey was the most compassionate and loving thing you could do for him. Everyone should have such a dignified exit from this world.

You were both incredibly lucky to have each other.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Really sorry to hear this. I had to do this the other year with my cat who was 16. She to started to deteriorate. Stopped eating and drinking. could barely stand up she got so thin and weak. Its a part of life though. they live and die.

It definitely is not an easy thing watching your cat be put down. As much as i wanted to be their after the whole thing i wish i didn't see it.

Sorry about your loss man. I lost 2 cats in my life so far, and it's never easy. In both cases I was an emotional mess. Oddly, I rarely cry over the death of a human. I think cat owners always view their pets as babies, so maybe that plays into the confusing dynamic.

It may sound cold, but like someone already posted, you'll feel much better once you get a new pet (or two or three). Hang in there.

My little cat was knocked down and killed in the road about a month ago. Can't remember the last time I cried so much. I feel your pain man, and am sending you a huge e-hug. (and some poo).

I'm so sorry dude. Animals become family members. You lost a member of your family. I'm sure you took good care of that cat, and it had a happy life with you. Be good to yourself.

I definitely feel your pain dude. I had to have a 15 year old cat put down about 6 months ago and I'm still not totally over it. My other cat is 17 1/2 and in great health but I know she could deteriorate at any time. I get sick to my stomach just thinking about it so I try to enjoy as much time with her as possible. Again... very sorry what you are going thru.

Also, remember the Dr Seuss quote:

Don't be sad because it's over, smile because it happened.

I'm sorry for the loss of your furbaby. I had to put my dog of 15.5 years down a few years ago. I too was there in the vets office for the final moments that I will never forget and wish I hadn't stayed.
