I have a pump shotgun too. That is my home protection weapon of choice. But when I am on the road it is hard to conceal in my waistband.

I use apartment loads in my semi auto pistol. They will not penetrate the walls, but will flesh. Neighbors are safe. Buckshot will go through sheetrock pretty well though. Hope you don't make a mistake.

had a guy who made death treats on such to me a few years ago. restraining orders and such were put in place, mostly to prepare legally if he did follow though and allow me an easier court case if I had to kill him. Was woken up many times in that time period wondering of it was a home invasion. I was calm, mostly cause it happened a lot and I wanted it over with and would have been happy to shoot the fucker.

I take gun ownership very seriously. I take safety training very seriously. You can't take a bullet back, and misfires can happen if you are handling a gun.

I would love to make it so that criminals and mentally ill people never get their hands on guns of any kind. But my challenge is, that laws would take mine away and allow people that have nothing to lose and don't mind breaking the law to keep theirs.

I had a situation where my buddy stopped at a rest stop. (I said hell no don't stop at a rest stop). He did anyway. I stayed in the car, he went in. A couple minutes go by and some big dude strolls into the bathroom behind him. He was looking around, not like a guy that has to go. I realized my pistol was in the trunk, in a silver case. I jumped out and got it. Then I see another guy who obviously saw me get the gun case, walking my direction fast. I look at him and he stops and gets on the cell phone. The big guy comes out of the bathroom and they leave together.

When my buddy came out I asked him what that guy did. He said he came in and turned on all the waters in the bathroom, then got a call and walked out. Same effect maybe with my shotgun, but I doubt I would have brought it on the road with me. Concealable firepower is important to me. If you are not at home, you can have a gun, but not freak out the people around you.

As for your question, I agree, in Canada, you don't need a semi auto handgun because the government has already put laws in place that are so strict you can't legally use it anyway, except at the gun range. You have to call the police and tell them when you are transporting it, the exact path you are taking and the exact time. Once they start restricting stuff like that there is no point in owning it. I can't even legally fire it in my backyard, even though I live on a large acreage.

If I lived somewhere without such draconian rules, I would own one simply because they are fun to shoot. No other reason needed.

As for semi auto rifles and shotguns, why wouldn't you use them? Not having to manually eject the shells is more efficient. And because you can do cool shit like this:

yet in the Vietnam war, piles of ground troops choose a pump shotgun instead of the m16 because of close range jungle combat - in many ways similar to the twists and turns in a home layout

a pump shotgun is VERY effective in close range home security, plus it has an added benefit. Chambering a round in a 12 gauge pump is one of the best and most effective ways to tell an intruder to GET OUT NOW without engaging in a gun battle.

i'd be interested in the answers to this.

I instinctively knew it, and use a shottie for my own home protection having a lot of experience with firearms, but I was impressed when I read the stats and saw what I thought and felt was backed up on Wikipedia with fact.

Why would you WANT a semi auto when the bad guy coming in might have a shotgun and be 40% MORE effective than your semi auto at killing you?

wanting a semi auto for home defense knowing the bad guy might have a shotgun is the same as bringing a knife to a gun fight. Why do you want to be on the loosing end?
