Sorry: Business question - Wiki scripts

Do you have a wiki site or two? What wiki script do you use/recommend? Wikimedia, Dokuwiki or something else?

now seriously, the only one I've used is MediaWiki and it's really good. I don't have experience with any other so I couldn't tell if there's something better

We are trying to install it and goodgirl is not really digging their user guide. Any tips on speeding it up?

I've only used Mediawiki on a few sites. The forum at http://www.mwusers.com/ was what I used to answer all my questions. It's been a while since I had an install but one of the first things you'll probably want to do is harden it up against spammers with a good captcha like recaptcha. There was a way to make it so anyone adding an url has to type in the captcha and this helped a bit.

Also if I recall correctly php APC made a big difference in performance with Mediawiki.

Mediawiki is very bulky but it has a lot of capabilities. It could be overkill if you are just planning on having a couple dozen regular registered users and contributors.

you should consider the use you're going to give to it, it's pretty overkill for small sites.

The good news is that if you're crafty and know how to edit the files, you can get something a less bulky. At the time I installed it for a client, I installed it as it came, but later they had someone else that "cleaned" the unused extensions and features.

If it was me, I'd use the default install, no extensions at all and go from there. Also, check this and see if it's of use for you

I had a mediawiki install and it got hit so bad by spammers that it caused the server issues.

Well, we have already decided that we will stick with approved editors and open it to the public later. It has a lot of potential; but thanks for the tips.

Mediawiki. Block everyone or you will get spammer hell. I have no idea how wikipedia can possibly control it. Leave one small door open spammers will find it.

Dokuwiki also gets my vote for a lightweight wiki software
