Weird indeed, but it seems to be quite a common notion that the world did look that way at some point in time. I remember seeing other images like this where everything pretty sandwiched into one giant piece of land with a few lakes seperating some parts.

Just think how many earthquakes have happened for the continents to end up where they are today.

One current theory is, you may get your wish when North America gets pushed over to Asia

it is pretty common theory another supercontinent will come about again. Might be in a very different configuration though.

i have to say, i'm stunned. i never realized that all the land masses at one point had literally been 1 massive island. i guess it never clicked, i *think* i recall hearing about pangaea but that's about it.

it's even funnier to me because a while back i went on a documentary kick that started off with the ring of fire, i wanted to learn more about it after the japan earthquake + i live on a major fault line in socal,
but that expanded into some cool stuff about how they now think the grand canyon was formed and such. it's pretty amazing how much these geologists and similar can sort out these things now.

Pangaea is the closest one or most recent one, 200 million+ years ago being close. Archeological Fossil evidence, Geological evidence in rocks, mountain ranges etc. All make it pretty easy to figure out what it looked like back then, and where land masses were.

I think that image is doing the rounds because they overlayed the current countries onto it, don't think I've seen one like that before.

I'm pretty sure we taught this during a geography lesson. I can't remember excactly, but I remember the theory.

yup interesting stuff...there were multiple super-continents in the past, many current signs showing the plate movement - East African Rift Valley, Island chain in Hawaii...finally those Geology lectures worked their way into my GFY comments...who woulda thought?

not only that, but in fact, the documentary series i referred to earlier was how the earth was made and i am sure it had to be mentioned, if not focused on, but i don't remember it, was thinking of watching it again to see where i missed it.

7th grade was a long time ago for some of us and it's not out of the question that people can go through the educational system after that and never take another geology course and also never have a memorable convo about pangaea.
