People from Caribbean countries are notoriously homophobic. It's a cultural thing. Despite the fact he should be able to see the correlation between himself being a minority and discriminated again based on his race and gays being discriminated against based on their sexual preference he probably cannot due to the culture he was raised in.

For example, my college roommate my freshman year was an exchange student from Haiti. Within the first twenty seconds of him walking into the room he asked me "Are you a faggot? I won't live with a faggot" and I almost kicked him in the fucking teeth. I told him to watch what he says to strangers and got real angry, since he was a stranger throwing around a lot of hateful words at me. He told me how people in Haiti hate gays and he won't live with a gay person. Didn't even have the respect to introduce himself or anything of the sort. He was a real shitball, rude as hell and I got a room transfer within the next two weeks. I refused to answer his question. When he came home one night and saw me sitting in bed with a girl from our hall I chose to simply give him the death-stare. I probably reacted a little poorly looking back, but I was really blown away by how rude and ignorant someone can be.

yup. after living in cali for quite a while i accepted a job transfer back to texas years ago, austin texas. i had a harley at the time and noticed dude across the street had one too. one day he had his garage door open and as i went over to introduce myself i noticed he had a huge confederate flag nailed up to the back wall of his garage.

i figured i'll just stay away and turned around. no sense being around that.

It amazes me that at one point in time we used to discriminate against people because of their skin color. The concept of telling someone they cannot drink out of a drinking fountain because they are black just... I can't understand this.

I think twenty or thirty years from now we are going to look back at all of this and think how stupid we were.

You don't need 20-30 years to figure that one out. People are stupid, people are bitches. Everyone loves to be a victim in this fucked up selfish world.

Will never happen IMHO.

I think ( and hope ) we will get to a point where we don't discriminate against an individual person. But there will always be stereotypes toward groups of people including blacks. Many times these stereotypes are rooted in some truth .. like it or not.

If we are honest .... think about what comes to your mind immediately when I say the following:

Jewish People:
Polish People:
Arab People:
Black People:
White Christian People:
Mexican People:

Tea Party People:
Democrats:
Republicans:

See...

It's actually perfectly accurate for the simple fact that neither color nor sexual orientation is a choice! He's the ignorant one if he thinks either is a choice. But some brains can't absorb the data so, your call on arguing the point.

I would love to believe that .. but I just don't think it will ever happen.

There is a reason I avoid the "black theaters" ... care to guess why?

There is a reason I avoid Promise Keepers conventions ... care to guess why?

It's not because I am a racist... some stereotypes are rooted in truth .. as long as they are there will always be some prejudices / stereotypes.

It's also a parallel because back then people thought that a real solution was labeling some fountains for whites only and others for blacks only. Just like marriage and civil union ideas. Both fails.

absolutely. no race is different in terms of racism/prejudices/stereotypes

I can see where he might see a difference.

Blacks were not just discriminated against; they were enslaved. Although discrimination can feel like enslavement, that is still a state of mind, as discrimination is a shackle of expression and ideas, shapes and colors, philosophy and religion, etc., not a physical shackle of the body. A slave suffered every type of discrimination; skin color is just the surface. Religion. Shape. And yes, sexual preference too, then add the shackles and being considered property with no rights at all, no free will. So any black person, especially from a country where slavery is still fresh in the minds of those not enough generations away from it, with family histories still recent enough to matter, might still have enough cultural memory to see that distinction. I can certainly see where someone, black or white, from Jamaica would see it that way considering Jamaica's history in the slave trade.

In any event, I hope I am giving you enough of another perspective where you can have a reasonable and intelligent conversation with him about it.

^^^there are some current differences as well. In an urban center like Toronto, white gay men don't experience nearly the same levels of overt systemic discrimination that Black men and women of any sexuality experience.

I gotta agree with Choopa_pardo on the influence of Jamaican culture though, obviously not every Jamaican is homophobic (many are not and rather actively challenge it) but this is a nation with a streak of overt homophobia.

My partner grew up in JA and we spend a LOT of time there. I love the country and the culture but the homophobia saddens me. Even my guy had a learning curve when he first moved here, growing up in Jamaica he simply had never been exposed to 'out' gay men. In Toronto seeing two men walking hand in hand is completely normal, whereas in Jamaica that can get you killed. Overt homophobia the case for much of the Caribbean; hell, in Barbados homosexual acts are still criminalized.

I'm not agreeing with your neighbor's views in any way (I think they're appalling) and I don't blame you for not wanting to be around homophobic crap, I'm just trying to give a perspective on where it's coming from. Issues of racism and issues of homophobia against white people ARE different (not in a hierarchical manner, just in the sense that different systemic forces are at work with each and produce different consequences in different ways) and beyond that your neighbor has obviously chosen not to critically examine some of the beliefs he grew up with as a product of a culture that is virulently anti-gay.

a shame about your neighbor, don't let him ruin your weekend.

Be that as it may, you could not be sentenced to hard labor or jailed, or executed for being of black African descent anywhere in the world. In African countries today, for instance Mauritania, northern Nigeria, southern Somalia and Sudan, you could be executed for being gay. Question: is slavery worse than execution? What would you choose, faced with that? Everyone says they'd prefer death, but strangely enough real people who have been faced with that choice often choose slavery.

I am saddened by the constant "greatest victim" fight. What it really means is, you don't deserve as much remuneration as I do. The truth is, wherever someone is denigrated or punished for being who they are, a great wrong is being committed. Every person should work for people to be judged by their actions and the content of their character.

In any event, I hope I am giving you enough of another perspective where you can have a reasonable and intelligent conversation with him about it.
first off, blacks were not the only slaves and secondly, who enslaved them? other blacks! the whites brought them already enslaved by their own race.

Ummm... yeah... but that isn't the point at all.

The point is a real slave, no matter what color, or time period, or whatever, is more discriminated against because that sort of discrimination includes all the other forms I mentioned, plus something extra to make it even more heinous.

I am not implying anything. I think what I said was pretty clear. I can see where they would have that difference of opinion. It is not an excuse for them or anyone else but a reasonable explanation of why they might have the opinion that they have.

Why are you so quick to think it is some sort of "black excuse" btw? That is sort of racist when you get right down to it.

Are you fucking kidding me?
No, there is no comparison between the freedom of gays and the freedom of blacks in this country.
Blacks were SLAVES, so when you talk to your friend just say you had a brain fart and you realize that there is a huge fucking difference.

You are incorrect.

Under CURRENT law. The first amendment of the constitution of the United States of America does not apply to homosexuals of any race. If you are not homosexual you have more rights then non homosexuals.

There are many comparisons between the freedom of Gays & the freedom of blacks. The most glaring that you fail to recognize is the new freedom giving the right to marry.

Now educate yourself and respond with intelligence, & I will do the same to open your eyes to reality and educate you, if this is possible.

I've raised my son since birth. As of this moment, my straight son has more rights then his Gay father. Meanwhile all blacks can now marry without permission, they can even marry whites if they want to. Gays have only just begun to receive PERMISSION to marry, and only is 1/3 of the states.

There are many more comparisons, but they don't matter to you, we know this.

The suffering of gays in this country has been like a slap on the wrist in comparison to the suffering of blacks.

Okay, I am going to lay this out once and i'm going to bed.

The United States is composed of many races, blacks being one of them.
When a person is born black, they are born black not by choice, but because of the genealogy of their parents.

A gay man sucks dick by choice, that is his sexual preference, his lifestyle.

To compare the two in terms of degree of struggle is ludicrous as there is no comparison.

Blacks have suffered for over 200 years in this country, often times in the most unimaginable ways simply because of the color of their skin, NOT by any preference or choice in their lifestyle.

There is a huge problem in this country wherein people have lost the ability for comparative or relative reasoning, and without this you get idiots who somehow compare the plight of gays to the plight of blacks.
