Thank nature this isn't the current world map.

On another note, Britain was central back than aswell apparently

Sun.co.uk article, so pinch of salt and splash of vinegar may be required. But I've seen various maps like this before which are interesting.

Weird indeed, but it seems to be quite a common notion that the world did look that way at some point in time. I remember seeing other images like this where everything pretty sandwiched into one giant piece of land with a few lakes seperating some parts.

Just think how many earthquakes have happened for the continents to end up where they are today.

The article, if you can call about 5 lines of text and a bad quality image that, said Britain would have been 20*c warmer.

I wonder what the actual weather would have been like back then. Was there a jet stream? Was there polar ice? etc.

Bigger/better version here:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1epDzLFtaj...0/original.jpg

I remember being taught about this theory in School, but for some reason this image and story is doing the rounds at the moment.

One current theory is, you may get your wish when North America gets pushed over to Asia it is pretty common theory another supercontinent will come about again. Might be in a very different configuration though.

Sorry, I didn't copy/paste the article link . It's doing the rounds for some reason, I've seen it on a few other news sites aswell. That is Pangaea, the best scientifically understood supercontinent.

Wikipedia has a good article on it.

Plate techtonics + mantle convection = Eventually it will happen again. One theory is North America will eventually become part of Asia, or conjoin to form a new supercontinent. It is also possible, all the land masses will become one again.

no worries, i'm on it now! i have to say, i'm stunned. i never realized that all the land masses at one point had literally been 1 massive island. i guess it never clicked, i *think* i recall hearing about pangaea but that's about it.

it's even funnier to me because a while back i went on a documentary kick that started off with the ring of fire, i wanted to learn more about it after the japan earthquake + i live on a major fault line in socal,
but that expanded into some cool stuff about how they now think the grand canyon was formed and such. it's pretty amazing how much these geologists and similar can sort out these things now.

thx for the thread

Pangaea is the closest one or most recent one, 200 million+ years ago being close. Archeological Fossil evidence, Geological evidence in rocks, mountain ranges etc. All make it pretty easy to figure out what it looked like back then, and where land masses were.

I think that image is doing the rounds because they overlayed the current countries onto it, don't think I've seen one like that before.

I'm pretty sure we taught this during a geography lesson. I can't remember excactly, but I remember the theory.

Short video on it here:

And no worries

yup interesting stuff...there were multiple super-continents in the past, many current signs showing the plate movement - East African Rift Valley, Island chain in Hawaii...finally those Geology lectures worked their way into my GFY comments...who woulda thought?

...I like to think of it as one big "land orgy"

And why thank nature? You are merely talking about the lack of inner water?
Who knows, maybe in that case we would have smaller population accordingly so it would not be a problem.

not only that, but in fact, the documentary series i referred to earlier was how the earth was made and i am sure it had to be mentioned, if not focused on, but i don't remember it, was thinking of watching it again to see where i missed it.

7th grade was a long time ago for some of us and it's not out of the question that people can go through the educational system after that and never take another geology course and also never have a memorable convo about pangaea.

it's entirely the case that pangaea, shifting plate theory, while introduced in 1915, was not even beginning to be accepted until the 1950s and then not necc part of any curriculum in the late 1960s, early 1970s, when i would have been in those grades.

Quote:
continental drift theory is the theory that once all the continents were joined in a super-continent, which scientists call Pangaea. Alfred Wegener first supported continental drift.

Wegener’s explanation of continental drift in 1912 was that drifting occurred because of the earth’s rotation. This explanation and his theory were not widely accepted. Prior to Wegener, however, many had noted that the shapes of the continents seem to fit together, suggesting some schism in the past.

Before the 1950s, the concept of the continental drift, for the most part, was not even entertained as plausible. In the 1950s and the years that followed, however, geologists began to consider the theory, and in the 1960s, most geologists came to accept that the theory may well be possible.

Most scientists, and those not believing in creationism, accept the continental drift theory, along with the theory of plate tectonics. Those endorsing the theory of intelligent design usually accept continental drift as well, but assert that a spiritual presence designed and created the earth.

Continental drift theory is now taught as accepted theory in public schools throughout the US.
