I saw a post on my Facebook feed from this girl I met in Barcelona; she recently moved from Dublin to Oakland and is trying to assimilate I guess. She is making a playlist of classic rock and was talking about Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida which she added because it was on a "most popular" list or something. For those of you that have heard it, it is okay in small doses which is what they had a two minute version for radio. But that song/album was not that great; this is what it was all about with acid rock.

They played a set in the late 90's at one of the big outdoor rock festivals I used to work security at. I was working the VIP area as I recall, overlooking the massive stage, when lo and behold there they were, THE Iron Butterfly, playing this song no less. I saw dozens of 60-70 yr olds literally running, or at least fast-walking, from their campsites to the stage area to catch their act.

It was surreal.

Steppenwolf was among the headliners of that fest that year as I recall. I worked the pit in front of the stage that night, and as rain poured down on 30,000 people they blasted out "Born to be wild".... again, it was a surreal moment I'll never forget.

I'm 50. Lloyd is something like 10 years my senior. In 1968 when in-a-gadda-da-vida was released I was five, and back then one of the greatest things I remember is that when cars drove by with tunes blasting out the windows they were great songs that people on the street loved hearing. Even a lot of older folks.

Today, not so much.

The first concert I ever went to was Three Dog Night with opening acts The Grass Roots and Steppenwolf.

My kids used to call Born to Be Wild "daddy's song" because it was played over and over again at the motorcycle rodeo I was in.

No question, it's definitely all that you say. I only mentioned it because, well, all that changes when you see them play it live for the first time in front of tens of thousands of people, playing it just like they did in the old days, smacking the audience all over the place with it.

Magic Carpet Ride is another one. Very often played, possible overplayed as well, but still quite exhilerating seeing them perform it live.

Fans that don't get to hear a band's other songs really ought to start buying more albums, and quit listening to 'the hits', RE; MTV, the radio, etc. You're rarely going to hear side B stuff there.
