i can see why this is your favorite, it is a handsome rugged masculine watch.
really nice. what does it cost?
diamonds are not for me, on girls i think it looks sexy and stylish though.

I've seen the Explorer II ref 1655 go as low as 8k USD for a really beat up model in need of a full service, and as high as 50-60K USD for a pristine model with box and papers.

I would NEVER buy a Rolex watch...
Their design is awful and tasteless (to me at least).

I would rather buy Longines, Tissot, Patek Philippe, Tag Heuer, Breitling... in that price range.
There are many better looking and better quality watches for the price of Rolex (or even for less)

As for top of the line, I'd love to own a Vacheron Constantin or Ulysse Nardin watch.
But these can cost a fortune... "Time is money in deed...

Don't want to offend anyone with this post - just my 2c on watch topic...
Hope the Rolex will serve you well and that you'll be happy with it...

PS:
I would also never buy a fashion brand watch like Armani, D&G etc...
These will last 2-3 years and after that will stop working and they can't be repaired because of their poor built quality (mostly built in china from poor materials and using low quality components). This is so you dump it in the trash and go back to the Armani store and you buy a new one.

The time is passes quickly but if you wear a single watch all the time it will somehow slow down things.
That's the reason you should buy a quality watch and wear it for a long time.
I said that I would like to own V.C. or U.N. - and I'd like to add - the older - the better...
To bad my grandpa didn't own one so I could inherit one...

I can never understand people wasting so much money on "Watches".

It's probably one of the last things I would waste money on, even if I had millions and millions to waste.

Have you seen how much money people waste on jewelry that does not even show time?
There is no rational "point", its jewelry.

Wrong, they can easily be repaired, and no they do not last only 2-3 years. Yes they are not much better than cheaper watch brands such as Casio's, but even Casio for 50Eur can be easily repaired and worn for decade or more.
Might be that you had experience with fake DG/Armani watch.

There are a comparative few number of consumer products that are so well designed and made that they have become cultural icons. It's not the glitz or snob appeal that keeps them alive, but the quality of the craftsmanship. Victorinox Swiss Army knives are a good example, Casio G-Force watches are another, as well as cameras from Nikon and lenses from Zeiss. Without dispute, Rolex is part of that list of the best consumer products ever made and that's why we are talking about them here. People who know them respect them.

I got my first, the two-tone Datejust, at the Army PX at Robinson Barracks in Stuttgart during the Cold War. I got it for an obscenely inexpensive price because they guy who ordered it out of the catalog for delivery there got cold feet. So, the PX discounted it from the military catalog price. After I had it on layaway - because an Army JAG Captain's salary didn't permit me to buy it outright - the PX had a special event discounting every item on layaway by 20% if you paid it off that day - and that's how I got it for about $875 when the list price was $2,500 and the military price was like $1,350. It's been in twice for service in 30 years but it still runs like a gazelle and still looks like it did the day I bought it. The green leather and wood box shows more wear than the watch. It's pretty dressy, so a GMT Master has become my everyday watch. I like and respect Seikos and Casios and Sector - I have a few of each, and each has its distinctive best quality and purpose, but none of them feel like a Rolex. Honest. And you should see the look on my dogs' faces when I put them up to their ears! Even they love to hear that movement in action.

Few years ago i picked up an Emporio Armani watch in BKK. 2k Baht. Still works and when i take it in to get a new strap most shops can't tell it's fake.

Congrats, nice classic model

Rolex is the cheapest watch you can buy....

Why ? There is such a demand for Good Conditions Rolexes, you can enjoy it for a few years and AT WORST, resell it for the same price you paid. No other watch can achieve that. I LOVE Brietlings, but the aftermarket demand is way lower, so if you ever want to resell it, you'll have to wait or discount it.

Rolex is not just a watch it's a form of estate you can pass on for generations...

Bought my first (Yachtmaster 2 tones/champagne) many year ago, now it's worth near double what I paid for, still in pristine condition.

Bought my 2nd one from a friend of all here in 2004 (Black SS Submariner), now worth about 1.5 times what I paid for.

Event the nicest Timex you pay let's say 200-300$ in few years will worth next to nothing...

As one said, there is no logic behind that, 'it's jewelry'. Some will pay $$$$ for the latest 5D GagaMouch 1000 inches TV set, I won't.. To each their thing !

answer is simple... If I would decide to sell the Rolex in 10 years, I would probably get the same amount of money for it that I paid for it... why it is a waste?

Try to do the same with a car

Btw, I would never buy a high end watch like Rolex brand new, always pre owned.

The moment you walk out of the store with your brand new watch... the price drops 30% within 2 seconds

There is a jeweler in Chicago, Howard Frumm, in the Jeweler's Building, in a shop up on the eighth or ninth floor, who sells and services only used high-end watches. He's the only guy to see about used Rolex in Chicago - and I don't know, but I'd surmise, that he's one of the busiest in the United States. He so dominates the market here that if you look for a Rolex in a pawn shop, they will send you to Howard. His prices are always highly competitive (about $100 or $200 higher than what the identical watch sells for on eBay, the service is very personal, repair/restoration department is excellent. But for some reason he won't give you a bill of sale. He'll give you an estimate for insurance purposes and nothing more. Perhaps once he got burned with a stolen watch? If you like Rolex and if you visit Chicago, go see Howard.

The G-Shock is the watch really worn by the Navy SEALS, not the brand that advertises the "Navy SEAL Watch". But they teach the SEALS to disable the illumination function.

I've got one with solar recharging, syncy with WWV, and three time zones. It's perfect for casual wear when things can get rugged.

I was in a Fossil store some time ago and saw they had dozens if not hundreds of watches that are designed just as nicely as any of the high end expensive watches, but for a few hundreds bucks instead of a few thousand.

Curious what the reasons are to spend more. Is it just status to have the name?

If you could buy an unbranded Rolex, would it have the same value to you? Would you consider buying one unbranded?

I understand to get a high end car there's many advantages.. Performance, style, status, comfort, quality, features, etc etc.

For watches, I can only see quality and status...

Not hating either way, I can't see the value for myself, but watches can be beautiful and I understand wanting to have a nice one. I just feel like the $300 watches look and function really similarly to something that costs way more.

Sort of like how Pandora sells "jewelry" that likely won't hold any residual value down the road.. It's not made of anything of value. Are watches the men's version of that in a way? Not suggesting high end watches don't hold value, but I think a lot of the ones in the $2k and less range won't be worth much down the road

yes, the status factor plays a role I think... but that's not all... as said before, you can sell your Rolex after 10 years for the same amount you bought it for... can you do that with a $300 watch?

Also, if you take good care of your Rolex (or most other high end watches) it can look brand new after 10, 20 or even 30 years... Will a $300 watch look like new after 20 years? I think probably not...

(It's also a cool idea that you can wear a watch for 20 years, and pass it on to your son while it is still in great shape..so he can wear it for another 20 years)

I certainly agree that you can buy really nice looking watches for $300, of course... but for me personally, a man has only one piece of jewelry, and that is his watch... that's why I think it's OK for that one piece to be high end, expensive, extremely nice, a waste of money or what you want to call it... it is not only a watch, it is jewelry

its the mechanism which brings the value. A rolex, patek philippe type of watch will work forever. Most are made out of gold or platinum which have an actual value. Any Rolex you baught for 2k 10 years ago you can sell for about 3-4k today. Bust most of the time you are right. They will stay about even. That is mostly because they are Stainless Steel and not Gold. Gold watches will go up and down based on the value of gold. Gold has gone through the roof in the last 10 years. Although its down for this year. Its still a lot higher then it used to be. Also there are a lot of collectors for watches. There are limited editions etc etc. There is always a value if you buy a Rolex. Not many other watches for 2k-4k will hold the value like a Rolex will. There is also not a large discount margin on buying these watches. Where most breitlings you can get for 45-60% off retail price. If you get 25% off on a Brand new Rolex you are stealing it.

There are definitely some good quality affordable watches, but Fossil isn't one of them. The quality and engineering difference in a high end watch is massive.

The value in movements also comes from a lot of engineering geek factors such as how long the power reserve lasts, the complexity of the timekeeping (timezones, moon phases, day/week/date features, precision of chronograph, etc). You're paying for what is essentially mechanical engineering art.

The usefulness of a watch precisely telling the time can't be understated enough.

We're not talking about the usefulness, rather the technical achievement. Most things are actually useless

That's exactly what I was saying ^^^^

On a side note, let's not be hypocrites, if the very same watch/brand would sell for $200, nobody (well almost nobody) would want it... Of course it's also kinda status.

Why everyone want a Benz/Beemer/Lexus, whatever... ? Beside the Quality, comfort , Performance, etc.... It's for the status.

When I got compliments about the watch (and I don't flash it in people's face), of course it makes me feel good and proud... Then maybe I,ll try to get them to jump in th bandwagon and invest in one... It's almost Free

They are high end but they are just great watches. I worked with a guy who got one 40 yrs ago with his wife in Switzerland. It was a stainless and he got it very cheap. He loved that watch, beat the shit out of it and it just worked. He never took it off.
